In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge

forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 2: Evaluation question 1

The title of the film

The Title we chose was The Wake. We have chose to put the film title near the end because we have put no diegesis into the last scene and have made it flow all the way through to the main title of the film. This will create suspense and terror and creates a climax to make the audience think what is going to happen in the film.

Setting/Location

This scene in the film opening shows where our location/setting will be. We have chosen this location because it brings the feel of loneliness in a house and can show suspense. This is a typical location that is used in most horror films therefore it will appeal to the audience more.

Costume and Props

One of the main props we used was the mask that the killer is wearing. This mask symbolises the horror genre we are getting across. The reason why we used a white mask because if he has all black clothes and a white mask it will make the killer stand out when you see him in the opening. It also makes the killer more mysterious because we won’t know who the killer and this will keep the audience interested.

Camerawork and editing

We chose to put the title sequences such as directed by and produced by at the beginning of our film opening is because it follows the conventions of a film opening giving the audience information about who was involved in making the film. We put the titles over the scenes in the opening which informs the audience quicker than just putting them on a black screen.

Title font and Style

The title we chose for our opening is a scary, bald font. We chose this type of font because it matches the storyline in our film which is scary and tense. We also chose the colour white so it stands out and shows the title sequences in our film opening more clearer. Another reason why we chose is that it also matches the colour of the mask that the killer wears which also makes the killer stand out in scenes.

Story and how the opening sets up

This is the beginning of the film opening, it is the main character walking home. The way you can tell this is a horror film is he is walking home in the dark by himself. This also gives the audience that something bad might happen because of how lonely the character is at the beginning. This is a typical convention because it keeps the audience on edge.

Genre and how the opening suggests it?

This scene is where Tony walks past this room into his room next door. The scene where Tony walked into the house it was all diegesis sound in the background but when he walks past this room the killer slides from the darkness then it plays non-diegetic music. This suggests it’s a horror because we have used a typical convention of a horror which is scary and suspense music to make the audience feel scared and keep them on the edge of their seats.

How characters are introduced?

The way we have introduced the killer is very mysteriously and unexpected. We have looked at most horror films and have taken some ideas from them. We have followed key conventions of a horror that we the main character is unaware of where the killer is and another is they are so close to seeing them for example in our film Tony walks past the room that the killer is in.

Special effects • We used effects in our opening such as transitions to make our film opening more

realistic to a typical film opening. We didn't’t use transitions all the time because we are making a horror opening so it doesn’t have many transitions in a typical horror opening instead we are using mostly cuts to show what one person is doing and cuts straight to another person which creates suspense because in one of the scenes the killer is the room next to the main character room this raises tension because he is right next to him.
