EVALUATION QUESTION 1 When making my magazine I used a lot of other magazines for inspiration. These include Loud and Quite, Fader and Clash. The title of the magazine ‘Sidewinder’ is a catchy name and this is the reason I used it, it is unique and catchy and will draw peoples attention to the magazine. Also because It is unique and different I feel that it will attract fans of alternative and indie music and they like unique and different things. The Font I used was Helvetica Bold I used this font as it’s bold a stands out so it will attract my target audience to the magazine. I also feel, as the magazine sidewinder is a similar name to a lot of the magazines in the high-street shelf at the moment so the magazine will not look out of place. My Mass Head, which is ‘Sidewinder’, is the biggest text in the magazine this is so that it stands out compared to everything else and people are then more likely to remember the name of the magazine. Also the writing of the mass head is black on a white background and this makes the name stand out a lot more. The graphology/Page layouts of my front cover are very simple. The font that I have used for the whole of my front page is Helvetica Bold. I used this font as it is simple and suits the simple but effective look I have gone for to attract my audience, which is indie / alternative music fans so they would like this design. The colours I have used on my magazine are mainly black

EVALUATION QUESTION 1When making my magazine I used a lot of other magazines for inspiration.

The colours I have used on my magazine are mainly black and white this works well as the black stands out well on the white back ground I did this for my Mass head and the line which is underneath it. Making this stand out is good as it will attract people to my magazine and people will remember it better if it makes a statement. I have also used the same font but on white on the picture where the ‘+’ is this is done so that it stands out because the font is bold and the white on a grey background stands out. Also the bands name is on the front cover on in white because it stands out over the coloured background. This needs to stand so if people no the band they will see their name and want to read the magazine.

I used mainly black and white for the text on my magazine because these colours are bold and stand out so this will make my magazine stand out more. When sizing my fonts I had to think it through. I made the Mass head the biggest text, as it needs to stand out on the magazine stand so people are drawn to it. Finding the point of visual interest did the positioning of the picture. This was done using page harmony. I have placed the picture so that the artists face was in the middle and was the main point of visual interest so that the target market is drawn to the picture and if they know / like the artist they will want to give the magazine a read.

The model, which I have used, is a stereotypical indie rock looking artist. I have dressed him in a variety of flannelled shirts which a lot of indie rock artist where. This also gives him a more vintage look which suits my target market ‘indie scenesters’. I also took pictures of the second member of the band who was styled with a smarter indie look. He was wearing a shirt with a sweatshirt over the top. A lot of indie artist wear this sort of clothing also. In the end the photos I took of the second artist didn’t work with the magazine layout I was going for so I decided just to stick with using the main artist of the band. Also as you can see I tried to experiment with the backgrounds. I used some which where outside at indie spots where you would see the target market I have chose hanging out. Evan though I like the photos they didn’t suit the magazine style I was going for so I decided not to use them. For my contents page I used a different artist ‘Ben Mckay’ He was styled in a more relaxed indie/skater look which was a black sweatshirt, black skinny jeans and some trainers. This looked worked well. Also I used a outside background where he is sitting on a bench next to a forest. This background worked well and I used this in the magazine to change it up form just being on plain white backgrounds.

As you can see from the two pictures above there is Liam Fray who is in the indie rock band ‘ The Courtneeners ‘ He is wearing a flannel shirt like the first artist I spoke about. On the right there is a picture of Alex Turner who is also in a indie rock band, ‘ Arctic Monkeys ‘ He has gone for a more smart, white shirt look, like the second artist I spoke about.

I took ideas from a lot of magazines such as Clash, loud and quite, fader for example. These magazines have simple layouts and this was what I was going for. The simplistic look with the main colours being black and white would attract my target audience of indie scenesters as after doing research this is what I found that they liked. If you look at the magazines below you will be able to see the inspiration I have took from them.
