MASTHEAD: The masthead I used for my magazine is one which shows clear contrast against the colour of the background. The title itself is short, breif and to the point making it stand out to audiences. I think that my masthead challenges shared codes and conventions as from doing research, I found that I haven’t found a masthead similar or same to mine as mastheads are usually more compact and shorter in length with them usually being a word or two at most.

COVER LINES: The cover lines which I’ve used for my article I tried to keep brief, short and effective for audiences making them interesting yet not too long to read allowing the audience’s time to read all headlines. I tried using as much space when writing them to leave as little negative space as possible. In terms of written material for shared codes and conventions for the cover lines I think mine follow the typical conventions and I’ve also tried to make the stories as gripping and as interesting as possible in as few words as possible.

MAIN IMAGE: The main image of the artist is used to convey his facial expression which is neutral. It also shows us his clothes which are designer brand commonly seen and associated with the Hip Hop scene. We see him in a close up shot which is a photography technique commonly used in magazines of this genre as it aims to show the artist so we get an idea of what he looks like. The main image is placed so that there’s minimum head room and negative space left making the cover seem more full and packed with more content.

SKYLINE: My skyline which I’ve used conforms and supports the typical skyline convention which can be often seen across a wide range of magazines throughout various music genres as well as Hip Hop itself. So in conclusion I’d say my Skyline follows the typical conventions and shared codes of Skylines found across other magazines

Page 2: Evaluation question 1

PULL QUOTE: My pull quote used ‘Playing with fire’ relating directly back to the artist’s name ‘Fire beats’ which is a play on words and gives us a sense of the scale of the artists’ popularity and influence as to say ‘Playing with fire’ would connote he’s a big deal or that he’s important. I used this pull quote to be interesting and catchy

Main image: My main image is a medium shot of my artist faced against a background showing his waist upwards. I’ve placed it in the top left of the page to capture reader’s attention yet leaving enough room for text to be placed and written upon from feature article

FEATURE ARTICLE: My use of columns on my feature page article supports typical conventions and shared codes as columns are often used in Hip Hop style magazines and especially can be found in big well known publications such as VIBE and Rolling Stone but can also be seen throughout various other publications as well as Hip Hop magazines.

Page 3: Evaluation question 1

MAIN IMAGE: For my main image I placed my artist in an upright seated position with his hands placed in a praying motion and position which can sometimes be seen and associated with other Hip Hop magazines and popular artists such as ‘Fiasco’ and ‘The game’ who are both widely known and well respected Hip Hop artists. The artist is also shown to be making direct eye contact with the reader making them engaged upon the article and to pull their focus in.

STORY LINES: The story lines I used on my feature page article are designed to be short, to the point and informative to the reader on what they are about. I’ve tried to use as little words as possible when creating the title lines creating a sense of interest for readers. I’ve also used a colour scheme which shows contrast on the page for making story lines and page numbers stand out from each other creating a nice variety of colour on the page

FEAUTURE PAGE TITLES: The page title for this feature page is simply called ‘Features’ making it simple and effective for the reader. It lets them know what the page is about and what they can expect to find on the page. I’ve also included a small sub heading which reads ‘In the mix’ which is something seen on VIBES magazine feature page article including the artist ’50 Cent’

COLOUR SCHEME: COLOUR SCHEME: The colour scheme which I used is a fairly basic one which consists of two main colours being red and white. These two colours stand out with each other along with the red border making the page more visually appealing yet I’d say would conform against typical conventions and shared codes for feature page articles
