Executive Summary The aim of this evaluation was to profile young people taking part in a variety of specific V&A events, and investigate their experiences of the programme. This report analyses the data from 106 questionnaires collected at Young People’s events during 2012, as well as 160 self-completion forms from 2011-2012. Key Findings Comparative Data Comparing the data from this evaluation with wider museum data allows us to see how the profile of young people taking part in the profiled events might vary from other groups containing young people, and other events that attract this target age group (Friday Late events). The comparative table shows that the Young People’s Programme attracted the following:

• A higher proportion of lower socio-economic participants – 15% of all surveyed Young People (18% for free events and 8% for paid events) compared to the museum audience as a whole (8%), groups with young people (8%) and Friday Late events audience (10%).

• A higher proportion of Black and Ethnic Minority participants – 39% of

Autumn/Winter 2012 participants, and 25.9% of Create 2011-12 participants, compared to the museum audience as a whole (17%), groups with young people (15%) and the Friday Late events audience (25%).

• A higher proportion of participants with a disability – 6% of Autumn/Winter 2012 participants and 7% of Create 2011-12 participants compared to the museum audience as a whole (3%).

• Significantly more UK-based participants (93%) than the museum audience as a whole (53%), and slightly more UK-based participants than attend Friday Late events (85%).

• The majority of participants rate the following aspects of the paid courses as either ‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’ –

Enjoyment – 94% Content – 89% Organisation – 94% Facilitators – 96% Skills and Knowledge – 88%

• Participants who are largely engaged with the museum – 70% of Autumn/Winter 2012 participants, and 79% of Create 2011-12 participants had been to the museum in the previous year. However, it is unclear (especially with regard to self-completion forms that were completed mid-way through a course) whether some new-visitors reported themselves as repeat visitors on the basis of having been the museum the day before to take part in the same course.

• A largely female group of participants for both the free and paid events

(87%). Top Line Results This data was collated and analysed in terms of the free or paid nature of the events. This reveals some further interesting variations in the makeup of the event participants.

• 21% of participants to the free events were first time visitors, compared to 14% of participants to the paid events.

• Within those who had visited the museum before, 22% attending the

free events had been to a V&A event before, compared to 53% of participants to the paid events.

• The free events attracted an older audience than the profiled paid

events – this is partly to do with the paid events having narrower age boundaries for participants, but the difference is still quite clear – 50% of paid event participants were 11-15 years old and 44% 16-18, whereas 35% of free event participants were 16-18 years old, and 62% 19-24.

• Both groups of participants are largely London-based (64% for free

events and 59% for paid events). The main variation between audiences here is that the paid events only attract 3% of overseas visitors whereas the free event audience included 11% overseas visitors.

• In order to try and improve the accuracy of social demographic

information collected, and bring this into line with wider museum data collection, the social demographic question was intended to collect information not about the participants themselves, but about the head of their household. The social demographic information shows that the free events attracted a higher proportion of lower socio-economic participants than the paid events – 18% compared to 8%. Both of these figures are higher than the overall museum audience of 7%.

Page 5: Evaluation Report - Victoria and Albert Museum · This report analyses the data from 106 questionnaires collected at Young ... This evaluation consisted of a mainly quantitative questionnaire,

5

• The majority of participants to both the free and paid events were of

White ethnic origin (58% and 73% respectively), but they both attract a larger proportion of Black and Ethnic Minority participants than the overall museum audience – 42% and 27% respectively, compared to 17%.

• Both kinds of events attract a largely female audience – 90% of free

event participants, and 86% of paid event participants.

Qualitative Questions Qualitative questions were included on both sets of questionnaires in order to try and highlight what areas the young people feel the V&A do well and identify any areas that need strengthening. Key findings from this set of data include the following:

• This audience has two main sources of information about general ‘events and things to do’ – the internet, and word of mouth. They report this themselves in the qualitative questions, citing both Google and social networks as important information sources. Social networks are the place where the internet and word of mouth coincide, and twitter and facebook are currently key areas for this. This is backed up in the specific question about how they heard about the event they are attending – 33% of free event participants and 24% of paid event participants cite ‘word of mouth’; ‘Facebook, twitter, other social media’ was mentioned by 11% of free event participants and 3% of paid event participants, and the ‘V&A website’ was mentioned by 11% of free event participants and 25% of paid event participants. 33% and 14% of participants cited ‘Other’, and within this the main categories mentioned were ‘online, website, google’, ‘word of mouth’, ‘parents’ or ‘school’ (often parents or teachers are on museum email or mailing lists).

• Reasons for attending the events varied depending on the type of

event, which attract participants with different interests. The main overarching theme seemed to be learning about a subject or accessing information – the way that the V&A provides young people with the opportunity to access information, meet people and gain experience (for personal statements, CVs etc).

• Ideas that participants in the workshops had for ways to attract more

young people were varied, but the general feeling was just for more opportunities – more courses, more spaces on courses, more careers-based events.

A number of people mentioned better marketing, both online and directly to schools/colleges/universities. As many participants found out about the events through these routes, there is clearly some successful marketing already but the programme might benefit from this provision being reviewed.

Key findings from the quantitative questionnaires include the following:

• The majority of participants rate the following aspects of the courses as either ‘Very Good’ or ‘Good’ –

Enjoyment – 94% Content – 89% Organisation – 94% Facilitators – 96% Skills and Knowledge – 88%

• Participants most enjoyed meeting new people, learning new skills and

creating an object. The creative freedom allowed and working with tutors and staff were also positively reported.

• The learning outcomes reported were very varied, from specific skills such as adding details such as buckles to garments, to more general feelings such as learning to try new things and experiment. Comments were overwhelmingly positive.

• The most prominent response to the question of how the event could be improved was ‘more time’. Equipment failures were commented on, as was access to equipment such as computers or different kinds of materials. One other thing that was mentioned a couple of times was the provision of instruction sheets to take home as reminders. This seems a relatively simple action that could help the students to further their work in the courses once they are finished at the museum.

Background Create! The Young People’s Programme at the V&A comprises a range of different activities for young people aged 13-24. These include workshops, courses, festivals and projects. They are intended to teach new skills, introduce the collections of the V&A to young people, and offer opportunities to get education and careers advice from professionals working the creative industries. The aim of this evaluation was to profile young people taking part in a variety of such events, and investigate their experiences of the programme. The profile of the audience engaging with these events has been compared to that of young people in the V&A’s overall audience and those attending Friday Late events. The findings also highlight what areas the young people feel the V&A do well and identify any areas that need strengthening.

Methodology This evaluation consisted of a mainly quantitative questionnaire, which also included 3 qualitative questionnaires. This questionnaire was used at the following events in 2012: Thursday 23 August - Fashion Photography Course - Make Your Own Garment Course - Create Futures: Upcycling Course Friday 28 September - CreateVoice Meeting Friday 2 November - CreateVoice evening event ‘Creativity in the

City’ Saturday 8 December - Create Fashion Festival event 2 researchers undertook the data collection – Beth Dyson and Helen Hales. In addition to this primary research this report also presents the results of 160 self completion questionnaires from Create young people’s events between October 2011 and July 2012. Sample sizes 106 young people were sampled between August-December 2012. 160 self completion forms were collected from Create young people’s events between October 2011 and July 2012.

Data Analysis

Qualitative Questions The questionnaires included three qualitative questions:

1. How do you generally find out about events and things to do? 2. Why did you attend this event today? 3. What would you like to happen at the V&A that would attract more

young people to the V&A? The full answers as given in the interviews can be found in Appendix 3. Questions 1 and 3 have been analysed with all the events together, but Question 2 is discussed by event, as the answers are sometimes quite specific.

1. How do you generally find out about events and things to do? The most popular response to this question was the ‘Internet’, followed by ‘Word of Mouth’. Within the Internet, Facebook, Google and Twitter were cited most frequently. The most popular keyword that respondents cited using was ‘Fashion’, but others included ‘Photography’, ‘Sport’, ‘Retail’, ‘Business’, ‘Art’, ‘Museum/Gallery’, ‘Textiles’, ‘Careers’ and ‘London’. It appears that although ‘Fashion’ is a key interest for participants in these events, it is not their sole motivation in looking for events, or the only reason they choose to attend events at the V&A. ‘Word of mouth’ was the second most popular response. Six respondents said they had found out about this event in particular from their mum, while others mentioned friends or school. Social networks seem to be a key source of information for respondents, from both a personal contacts and a marketing point of view. ‘Magazines’, ‘Emails’ and ‘Posters’ were also mentioned, though less frequently.

2. Why did you attend this event today? Responses to this question from these events sampled consistently reveal a strong interest in fashion from participants, from both a personal and a careers point of view.

Page 18: Evaluation Report - Victoria and Albert Museum · This report analyses the data from 106 questionnaires collected at Young ... This evaluation consisted of a mainly quantitative questionnaire,

18

Create Futures - Upcycling course 7 of 8 participants mentioned an interest in fashion, and 2 of these indicated an interest in going into fashion as a possible career option. A further respondent indicated that attending the course was good for her CV, although she did not specify a particular interest in fashion. The free nature of the course was mentioned by one participant. The opportunity to learn more about the specific subject was the main reason respondents gave for their interest. Create Workshops These workshops are events that participants had to pay a fee to attend, and respondents from these events commented more frequently on this than those from the free events – 5 of the respondents stated explicitly that value-for-money was one of the main reasons they decided to attend the event. 7 of 31 respondents also mentioned previous Create courses they had been on as being key – they had enjoyed their previous experiences. In addition, interests in fashion and photography were cited frequently, as were links to courses the respondents were either on holiday from or intending to start in the new academic year (both school and university courses). CreateVoice The social aspect of the CreateVoice group is key to participants – meeting ‘like minded people’, spending time together and working on projects. The privileged access and unique nature of the project was also mentioned by a number of respondents. Creativity in the City Responses from these participants were less ‘Fashion’ orientated than some of the other events. The chance to attend workshops was mentioned, and also a general interest in what was happening – 3 participants mentioned coming to the museum for another reason, and had come to attend the Creativity in the City event out of curiosity. The free nature of the event was mentioned by 1 respondent. Fashion Festival The majority of respondents attending the Fashion Festival had a strong interest in fashion and the fashion industry which influenced their decision to attend the event – 15 of 44 respondents stated they are studying fashion (another 3 mentioned they were students but did not specify what subject), and 4 of 44 mentioned they work in the industry. 8 respondents specified they had come to get advice, on subjects such as their portfolios; on how to get into the industry; about careers. 6 respondents stated they had come to see a

19

particular talk from an industry professional. 2 participants mentioned that it was free.

3. What would you like to happen at the V&A that would attract more young people to the V&A?

Specific responses to this question included – ‘Fashion shows’, ‘careers workshops’, ‘longer courses’, ‘shorter courses’, ‘weekend courses’, ‘more space on courses’, ‘better promotion’ – there is a general feeling of just wanting ‘More’ of what the V&A already offers. Comments on the events are positive, but a number of people mentioned that they need better marketing – both online and directly to schools/colleges/universities. The possibility of careers advice and or workshops was mentioned specifically by 5 respondents. 7 people commented that more free events would be good. None of the respondents who had paid to attend commented on this aspect. 31 respondents had either no comment to make or could not think of a response. Create Courses The self-completion forms also include four qualitative questions:

1. What did you like most about the event you attended? 2. Can you give an example of something new you learnt or did? 3. Are there any ways that you feel this event could be improved? 4. Any other comments?

The ratings that respondents gave in the table below are generally well reflected in the responses to the qualitative questions.

1. What did you like most about the event you attended today?

Meeting new people, learning new skills, and creating an object. These three outcomes are repeatedly mentioned by respondents from all the workshops sampled, and they are important and positive outcomes. Other enjoyable aspects frequently mentioned are that of creative freedom – ‘there were no limitations to what we were allowed to design’ – and of working with the tutors and staff.

2. Can you give an example of something new you learnt or did? ‘I learnt that you can do whatever you want!’ Examples given by participants range from broad statements such as ‘Learning to use new equipment’ ‘About drama schools’ ‘To try new things and experiment’ to very specific comments such as ‘I learnt how to add a collar ad buckles to garments’ ‘Learnt how to paint on icing’ ‘I learnt that if metal is crushed to a very thin sheet it isn’t stronger than paper!’ The comments were overwhelmingly positive.

3. Are there any ways that you feel this event could be improved? The most prominent response to this question was ‘more time’. Other comments included providing access to equipment such as computers, or different kinds of materials. There were a few comments on equipment failure (powerpoint or sewing machines), and a couple of requests for instruction sheets to take home as reminders. Just over a third of comments were ‘No’ or ‘No comment’.

4. Any other comments? Responses to this question were general and positive.

Looking for internships as well, so this good for that I hope. Something good on CV and gives some experience. Create Workshops Just got a job in retail, so to get some experience, see what you do to get the clothes on the shelf. Fashion Illustration course, that was good, but prefer this because it's more hands on. Wanted hands on experience. Came last week - pattern cutting. Like fashion design and never learnt how to make clothes before. Been to pattern cutting and jewellery making. Thought quite reasonably priced and museum accessible, transport - near train stations. First meeting seemed like more in our hands, what to do - less like they are telling us, that's what I liked. In college at time, had free time - to spend time with young people, period of working in museums look good on cv. Really loved opportunities really exciting and interesting to be able to work with them, especially getting lot of benefits for us, meeting residents. Going to directors meeting next week - crazy. Came to Fashion festival last year so knew it would be good. Get advice, portfolio.

What would you like to happen at the V&A that would attract more young people to the V&A? Fashion Workshop - Metropolitan Dance workshop. More free workshops, to come and be creative. Fashion events, fun days, more free stuff - day things. No, not really. Depends on people's interest so don't know for others. Quite artistic - come just to wander around. Dance, acting, cooking - to enhance young people's skills - that's important. Even confidence building classes. Future careers stuff. A show. Fashion shows, would definitely attend that kind of thing. More courses - not shorter courses, longer courses! A summer course. Expand more - better marketing. People need to know about it. Create Workshops More of this sort of thing, opportunity to have work displayed is great. Would be a dream to have in V&A. More courses on fashion. Maybe longer would be nice. Not just fashion - Indian history, if learning in school. No. Quite a lot of the other courses could have been longer, they were a bit fast paced to take place in one day. No clue, sorry. I think it already attracts young people. Not really, can't really think of anything. Don't think so. Suprised at how little information I could find out about it - maybe a facebook page. Maybe tell schools, art departments about courses. It's a really fun thing to do so more people should know about it. No. Think you're doing everything right. Don't know really.

Page 34: Evaluation Report - Victoria and Albert Museum · This report analyses the data from 106 questionnaires collected at Young ... This evaluation consisted of a mainly quantitative questionnaire,

34

Slightly longer. 5 day courses. Maybe some weekend stuff so could do during school. No. Can't think of anything. Shorter, day courses. No, I think it's pretty good. No. Think you do most things, really, no. Maybe longer courses. Or more specific exhibitions - smaller, more frequent. E.g. Cecil Beaton. When looking, had everything I would look for. More space on courses? Don't know. I have missed a few ones I'd be interested in that were full. More things like this. Maybe expand it so it's not just up to 19, because I'm upset in a way that I won't be able to continue these events. More not fashion-related. Everything was, photography in general maybe. Friend doing one 16-25 so that's better. Some more drawing events. Drawing workshops. That kind of thing. No. No, not really. No, just carry on how you are. No Few more events like this, photographic ones. Just more of this. No, I think it's good. It sort of suits everyone. I think everything is good. CreateVoice Like to curate an exhibition of our own as a group. Maybe gain more work experience for CV work. Always great variety. Something more practical - career workshop. A day in the life of a curator. That sort of thing. It's ok I think. Saw recently a Tate-selected YP, make a tapestry, something like that. There are summer stuff, need more during the winter times - long term. To have the chance to be around like minded people. Can't say what else because it is happening. I feel like we are headed the right way. If it could just be more widely publicised. Also, I'm a member - events for older people and are quite expensive to pay again for events. Student membership, should have YP membership too, and events for younger members. I think already so much - the only thing is advertising. Concessions for students, but students don't know about. Amazing opportunities. Don't know. Nothing I can think. Creativity in the City Not that many people on workshops - how should they know about it? Advertising: when people arrive. Would love more costume things. Free things. Lectures cost money, but I try to go. Something with serving - fashion to grown ups, something for schools. Performance Art - workshops with people. A bit hard to find - from the main entrance, no sign. More events, more than once a month. And it was quite hard to find here. No comment. Things to do with Hands-on technology. Not touchscreen. Photography, something like that.

Page 35: Evaluation Report - Victoria and Albert Museum · This report analyses the data from 106 questionnaires collected at Young ... This evaluation consisted of a mainly quantitative questionnaire,

35

Not really sure because I think there is a lot of events going on. Create events seem good, but I really don't know enough to comment. No. Hands on workshops are always good - enthralling. Not been here long enough to say. No comments. I don't know, there's lots going on. Fashion Festival V&A should go out to colleges. Hold more events like this. Structure events around possible career/industry subjects. Not just 'hobbies' or 'interests'. Spread out. Run free events with lots of opportunities to ask questions. Advertise special events on social media, send posters to colleges and schools. Have tents at festivals. Better promotion of talks and events. Not just on V&A website. Going out to colleges and unis. Better promote collection study sessions - not many people know you offer this. Keep them free! Promote widening of knowledge - how much young people can get out of museums. Keep putting on events like this. Have a specific 'youth' twitter/facebook account. Special events for 16-24. Have something specific people need to research. More interactive sessions. Advice for young people - information on careers. Already really good. I always see a lot of young people here when I come. More things through schools - visiting speakers etc. Need to go beyond London. Advice in Midlands is very parochial. More advertising, already does a lot - already lots of changing exhibitions. Can't think of any right now. Don't know. Just more of this kind of stuff. Not sure. Making small furniture, no, not furniture, making small things for the home. More fashion things, maybe. Courses, not sure what in, can't think on the spot. No. Just different artist and fashion one off events.

You do pattern cutting courses but they are expensive. Maybe a Master class - one off, for a day. Open to everyone - so cheap or free. Garment construction and pattern cutting. Would be really useful. I think it's a skill a lot of designers don't have anymore. To be honest, you already have fashion shows and these events so I think you are doing quite a lot. Workshops are good, I was really excited to come today. Graphic design and posters are good to look at. Also Young People's work, students' work, an exhibition of some kind. More stuff like this. An Arts version of today. Fine, graphic art - anything really. I think you're doing well, so carry on as you are really.
