Byars, Mitchell. Competing With college students, Boulder teens hit hard by job
crunch. Colorado Daily. 5 Nov. 2011. 28 Feb 2012.
Article Summary: This is a great article about the effect that the college job market has
had on high school students. It explains how its quite difficult for college students to find
jobs and this is therefore affecting high school students who are trying to get these jobs. It
is quite obvious that jobs would rather hire a college student than a 16 year old high
school student and this article shows that. It has several great quotes from frustrated
highschool students who cant find a job either.
This article was an amazing source for me. It led to a new paragraph of mine where I
discussed the upset high school students. I had this theory in my original draft but I
needed a credible source to back me up. I was able to use the quotes from high schoolers
in my paper as well. It also opened my eyes to the benefit of me being a college student.
The article pointed out that plenty of jobs are only open to college students and high
school students as a whole, high school students are struggling. This was a different
direction than most articles I read which just focused on college.

Mitchell Byars wrote this article and he is a very credible writer. His previous jobs
included interning for Rick Reilly at ESPN and he also worked at The Denver Post.
These are both very credible sources and the fact that he works there speaks for him. He
wrote this article for The Daily Camera has been being published since 1891 and has
been always credible in Boulder, Colorado. It has a daily newspaper and is owned by
Prairie Mountain Publishing.
Isidore, Chris. The Great Recessions lost generation. CNN. 17 May 2011. 27 Feb
2012.
Article Summary: This article is about college unemployment and that it is becoming
such a trend. It gives several statistics such as 18 % if recent graduates are forced to get
jobs outside of their field of study. It also discusses how it doesnt matter how prestigious
your degree is and how Ivy League graduates cant even find a job. The lack of jobs is
beginning to delay the process of people becoming young adults. To sum it up, this
article showed the negative effects of the job market being hard for college graduates.
This article definitely opened my eyes to some new things that I didnt realize. The main
thing that I learned that the lack of jobs is affecting people becoming young adults. For
instance people used to be independent right after college, however now many people
live with their parents after college in this day and age. I also was very surprised to see
that it doesnt even matter if you have a Ivy league degree, it is still hard to get a job.

Networking is much more important then where you have a degree from was the main
thing that I took from this article.
This article is credible because I got it online from CNN. CNN is a cable network as well
as a website that is very respected. The website started in 1995 and is considered one of
the most popular websites in the world. It was recently ranked third place among online
global sites and it is used by people all over the world. Chris Isidore is the author and he
has wrote over 100 columns online for CNN. He has been a reporter at the journal of
commerce and is a well respected writer.
Kelly, Brian. "Is College Still Worth It?." U.S. News & World Report 147.8 (2010): 6.
MAS Complete. Web. 4 Mar. 2012.
Article Summary: This article is about college and questioning if its still worth it. It
discusses how the worth of college has gone severely down. It makes the point that 40 %
of people who go to college and end up wasting money due to dropping out. The article
points out the fact that the tuition has been raised to a point that a parent could buy a
house with the amount of money it costs to pay for four years of college. It also goes over
the way a student knowing what they want to do can help them. The writer goes as far to
say that if you are unaware of your major then you shouldnt attend college. The main
subject was just questioning if college is worth the money.

This article is very important to me learning about the differences in knowing what your
major is and going in without a clue. I planned on looking at the differences in majors
and this article reassured me that it would be a good idea. Another thing this article did
for me was it made me more aware of how student loans can affect a student. I didnt
realize the fact that students owe so much money in student loans and this could be an
interesting thing to look at when I write my paper. I was also very intrigued by the
paragraph about putting a price on becoming an educated person. Certain things you may
not apply but it is still good to know. This article was a very useful one and will
definitely help with my paper.
This article is credible because it is published by a very credible source: The US News &
World Report. The US News and World report is an online magazine and it covers plenty
of national news. It is often compared to Time and Newsweek as one of the most
respected magazines. It was founded in 1933 and has been considered credible since.
Brian Kelly the writer is very credible because he is the editor of US News & World
Report. He worked at The Washington Post in 1992 and has been a journalist for a very
long time. Kelly has written many articles and there has never been a problem.
Rampell, Catherine. Many With New College Degree Find the Job Market HumblingNew York Times 18 May 2011. 29 Feb. 2012
Article Summary: This article is all about college unemployment and recent college
graduates are currently facing very difficult times. It discusses the recent trends and how
a college degree is becoming less and less required. The article also points out how
several college graduates are working jobs that nothing to do with their major or what

they studied in college. It spends a little bit of time focusing on different majors and
which ones are the most useful compared to which ones are most useless. The article
discusses how college graduates not being able to find jobs is affecting high school
graduates as well. Ultimately the article describes the outlook for college graduates in a
negative way.
This was the first article I read and it was a great one. I got a lot of information from this
one, especially about topics I didnt know about. I was unaware how many people
decided to take jobs outside of their majors. The article described chemistry majors
taking jobs such as being a bar tender and other jobs that have nothing to do with what
they studied. Another thing about college graduates not being able to find jobs I didnt
realize is it affects high school graduates. If college graduates are taking jobs such as gas
station attendants, then high school graduates are still looking for jobs. This is something
that I didnt realize and it is an angle I may consider writing about. I also was very
interested in the fact that only half of the jobs landed by new college graduates even
require a college degree. This is a crazy statistic and something I will definitely include in
my research.
I was able to find this article was credible because of the news source it was written by.
New York Times is a very respected newspaper and is the third largest news paper in
America. It was started in 1851 and has won countless awards. Its online site is also very
incredible. The author of my article is Catherine Rampell who is a very respected writer.

She writes for the economics section in The New York Times and has worked at other
newspapers such as The Washington Post.
Roksa, Josipa, and Tania Levey. "What Can You Do With That Degree? College Major
And Occupational Status Of College Graduates Over Time." Social Forces 89.2 (2010):
389-415. Education Full Text (H.W. Wilson). Web. 6 Mar. 2012.
Article Summary: This entire article was about occupational specification. It discussed
the benefits of having a major which has a specific job lined out. It showed several
statistics proving that general education majors arent as successful at finding a job.
Majors without specific occupations often make it hard on students to make a decision for
their future. The Scholarly Journal also looked at the gender differences. Men are more
likely to get a job within their major than females. The journal constantly points out that
college graduates are more successful then just high school graduates. Ultimately the
main message was that having a specific major that relates to an occupation can help you
a lot.
This journal was very helpful due to the wonderful statistics it provided. It had real live
statistics for plenty of things ranging from gender to race. The gender statistics are very
useful and it may be something that I want to take a look at in my paper. Another thing
that was very useful were the countless paragraphs mentioning occupation specificity.
It showed that its very important to have a specific occupation mapped out when

choosing your major. The main challenge was reading the scholarly journal. It was a
difficult read and very lengthy. Although the scholarly journal was hard to read it
definitely provided some very important information.
The information came from a scholarly journal in Social Forces Volume 89. According to
its website the book Social Forces is a renowned journal of sociological research
associated with the Southern Sociological Society. It is also widely used in the US and
in One Hundred foreign countries. One of the authors Josipa Roksa is a professor of
sociology at UVA and has written books before. According to her Virginia professor
page, she seems to be well respected. The other author Tania Levey is a respected social
science teacher at The City University Of New York (CUNY). It is very trustworthy
information.

Reflection
1. The hardest part about researching was finding good quality trust worthy sources. There was plenty of information online but I did my best to make sure it was
trustworthy. Anyone can have a blog and write about a topic with no knowledge
so I looked for respected articles and journals from professors with college
degrees. Another hard part was doing the article summary. I learned plenty of
things and it was hard to make it shorter in a small summary.
2.
My favorite thing about my research is that Im learning stuff that pertains to
me. I feel like plenty of things I do in college are things that dont apply to me
in life at all such as learning math. However since Im learning about the
benefits of college and disadvantages, it has a lot to do with my daily life.
Plenty of the research that Im doing is teaching me things and Im hoping to
apply it.
3. My group members helped by suggesting certain research that I should do. Iwas stuck on which route to take and one of my group members suggested I
look at what major is the most effective. My classmates also helped me with
the evaluative works cited. There wasnt certain stuff I messed up on such as
not underlining titles and they corrected that for me.

4. I learned that every source isnt considered reliable. Certain people have bias
opinion and you cant use those sources. I also learned that scholarly journals
are incredibly hard to read but they have a lot of useful information. I also
learned about how to cite your work properly. I used to think that work cited
was just MLA format bibliography. But I learned that evaluative works cited
involves an article summary and plenty of other aspects. I also learned there are
several different types of research. Primary research are interviews and these
are done frequently.
