What is Academic Advising?
What is Academic Advising? Rutgers University has a great definition of advising that I like to
use:
“Academic Advising is an opportunity to exchange information designed to help students reach their educational and career goals. Advising is a shared responsibility between an advisor and the student. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of the student to make decisions about his/her life goals by creating a plan to reach those goals.”
What is Academic Advising?
“Academic advisors can assist in this process by helping the student understand options, select appropriate courses, determine resources and, when necessary identify alternatives.” – Rutgers University
What can I expect in an Academic Advising Appointment?
• Among many things, you can expect an Academic Advisor to provide information regarding academic planning, assist with curriculum interpretation, and answer transfer questions, including issues regarding MACRAO and the Integrative Studies Requirement at MSU. An Academic Advisor will also be able to discuss the components of the Selective Admissions process with students.
What can I expect in an Academic Advising Appointment?
• Appointments are ½ hour in length.
• Talk about your interests, goals, major and career path as well as courses required to obtain this.
• Develop an EDP – Educational Development Plan that will help you plot out what courses you will need to take each semester to reach your academic goal.
EDP – Educational Development Plan
• What is an EDP?– http://youtu.be/TSIo39X493U
As military students you must have a declared field of study
• Your EDP will list which courses you will take each semester to obtain your degree and/or transfer based on your declared major. It may also list other to do items or notes pertaining to your academic career.
In Conclusion
• It is recommended students meet with their advisor once per semester just to make sure they remain on track academically.
• An EDP is your roadmap for college.• Advisors are here to assist and support you
throughout your academic career!
