What is Evangelism?

To evangelize means to announce or proclaim or bring good news.

“To evangelize is to present Christ Jesus to sinful men in order that, through the power of the Holy Spirit, they may come to put their trust in God through Him.” J. I. Packer

Page 3: Evangelism Training 1

Why the need to evangelise?

“For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Lk 19:10 NIV

“He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.’”

Mk 16:15 NIV

“Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” Jn 4:35 NIV

Page 4: Evangelism Training 1

“It takes all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people.”

Rick Warren

Being People-Centric19 Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

1 Cor 9:19-23 NIV

How do we witness?Words“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.”

Rom 1:16 NKJWorks “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matt 5:16 NKJ

Witnesses and Evangelists

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Ac 1:8 NIV

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up … Eph 4:11-12 NIV

God uses ordinary people to build His church

Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matt 28:18-20 NIV

Page 14: Evangelism Training 1

God uses ordinary people to build His churchGoing: this has to do with outreach

either collectively or thru personal evangelism

God uses ordinary people to build His church

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us.” 2 Cor 4:7 NIV

What happens if we don’t go?

But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? Rom 10:14 NLT

When I say to a wicked person, ‘You will surely die,’ and you do not warn them or speak out to dissuade them from their evil ways in order to save their life, that wicked person will die for their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood. Eze 3:18 NIV

Page 20: Evangelism Training 1

What should we expect?

From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more.

Jn 6:66 NKJ

And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, “We will hear you again on this matter.” So Paul departed from among them. However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.”

Ac 17:32-34 NKJ

Page 21: Evangelism Training 1

What should we expect?

“And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together.  For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’ I sent you to reap that for which you have not labored; others have labored, and you have entered into their labors.”

Jn 4:36-38 NKJ

Winning souls for Christ is spiritual warfare

“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

2 Cor 4:4 NIV

Page 23: Evangelism Training 1

Winning souls for Christ is spiritual warfare

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Cor 10:3-5 NIV

Strongholds are fortified places Satan builds to exalt himself against the knowledge and plans of God.
