The ProtagonistJames Roderick Evans is the main

protagonist of this humorous story. He is a

prisoner of Oxford Prison.

He was known to the offi cers as

“Evans the Break”. He had escaped thrice from prison

and was now kept under maximum security. Evans is a

witty and humorous sort of fellow whose appearance

resembles that of a vagabond, with long wavy hair

and an unshaven beard. He is both the villain and

hero of the story.

The story begins with a phone call from the Secretary of the

Examination Board to the Governor of HM prison, Oxford, about a prisoner called Evans, our main protagonist.

Evans was to write the O-level German Exam . The prison took all sorts of precautions to prevent him

from escaping while writing the test, since he had already escaped thrice.

The gist of the story

Page 8: Evans Tries an O Level

A parson from St. Mary Mags is invited to invigilate the exam. The exam begins

and goes on without any untoward incidents.

Now comes a series of unexpected events that results in the escape,

recapture and once again the escape of “Evans the Break”.

The story ends in an uncertain note which further enhances the curiosity of

the reader.
