The Evanston Symphony Orchestra opens its 69th season ldquoRomanticism Enduresrdquo with a new violinist in the concertmasterrsquoschair and a young pianist from the North Shore as soloist

The program ldquoRussian Rhapsodiesrdquo was chosen by the orchestrarsquos music director Lawrence Eckerling who will conduct his morethan 100 musicians in Rachmaninoffrsquos lush ldquoRhapsody on a Theme of Paganinirdquo Prokovfievrsquos monumental Symphony No 5 andMieczyslaw Weinbergrsquos ldquoRhapsody on Moldavian Themesrdquo

The Weinberg opens the concert The composer of RussianPolish heritage wrote the work just after World War II to celebrate hisMoldavian-Jewish heritage ldquoThis will be its Midwest premiererdquo said Eckerling ldquoIt opens with slow brooding music but the secondpart is a dance a real toe-tapper with Klezmer-like elementsrdquo

Prokofievrsquos rich and colorful Fifth Symphony which concludes the afternoon premiered in the winter of 1945 ldquoIt provides a sonicexperience of variety and contrast for both players and audience ldquo Eckerling said adding ldquoI cannot think of anything that thrills memore than the ending of this symphony Yes this was written during World War II but we shouldnrsquot think of that so much as thewords of the composer who said his work was lsquoabout the grandeur of the human spiritrsquo rdquo

Set in the middle of the program is Rachmaninoffrsquos popular ldquoRhapsody on a Theme of Paganinirdquo ldquoPeople are familiar with the 18thVariationrdquo said Eckerling ldquobut there are actually 24 variationsrdquo Some run together he explained but they can more or less bedivided into three sections mdash fast slow fast

Soloist in the rich ldquoRhapsodyrdquo is Kate Liu 20 who born in Singapore came to the United States at the age 8 ldquoI started pianolessons when I was 4rdquo she explained ldquobut my teachers here were Emilio del Rosario at the Music Institute of Chicago who wasjust wonderful and after he died Micah Yui My family moved to Winnetka to be closer to my teachersrdquo

Liu is now in her third year at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia

ldquoEveryone loves this piece and pianists all love to play itrdquo said Liu ldquoMr Eckerling wanted it on the program and when he askedme I told him I was eager to play itrdquo

Julie Fischer of Skokie is the first new concertmaster of the Evanston Symphony Orchestra in about 25 years succeeding JulianAaron

Eckerling explained ldquoSome people applied (for the post) and we reached out to some others Julie was not in the orchestra butshe is on the faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago and she is a consummate musician She has a beautiful soundrdquo

ldquoI wanted to be in the Evanston Symphonyrdquo Fischer declared ldquobecause they play exciting challenging music and I want to keepchallenging myself as an artist and musicianrdquo
