"Where does the water go?"
The children do an experiment with water to try to figure out what happens to water when it is exposed to the air. Where does the water go? Have they ever
wondered what happens to the water in puddles after it
stops raining?
We use a plastic cup and red tape
to use as a marker.
We mark a water level on the plastic
cup.
We prepare some water.
We fill the cup with water up to the
water level mark.
We put the cup on
a window sill and
observe what
happens.
We put the cup on a window sill and observe what happens. We leave it there for 5 days. Each day we observe
the water disappearing. It is called ‘EVAPORATION’. The water has gone up into the air. Evaporation occurs when the particles of water become warm enough that they turn into vapours and leave the
cup and escape into the air. After 5 days the water has all
disappeared. It has been evaporated.

Day 3
The clouds are full of water vapours which have been
evaporated.
We observe the
water.
The cup is empty.
We do other experiments with water. We put wet paper napkins in a plastic bag. Tie it up and put it in a sunny place. The vapours cannot escape from the plastic
bag. We can see the water vapours on the inside of the plastic bag. So the paper napkins do not
dry up and remain wet.
We wet the paper napkins and tie
them up in a plastic bag.
We can see the
water vapours
inside the plastic
bag.
We wet paper napkins
We hang the wet paper napkins near
the plastic bag.
Which paper napkins will dry
first?
The paper napkins
are dry but the ones
in the plastic bag are
still wet.
The water vapours could not escape
from the plastic bag.
