FROM THE CONVENOR

Congratulaytions on your selection for the 2015 Evatt National Finals! You are one of the top 60 students chosen from over 1,750 competitors from across the country, and that is an insane achievement. In order to get this far, you’ll have had to prove that you’re a deft negotiator, an impassioned speaker and well-versed on the issues. You’ll need to bring all of those skills you developed over your divisional rounds to engage with the resolutions and teams at the National Finals. I’m really proud of the resolutions we’ve put together for you to debate. Some of them will force you to grapple with issues you’d never even considered, and others will make you re-examine aspects of international politics you’ve taken for granted.

The Security Council operates as a particularly interesting example of the central contradiction within the international community. It is theoretically the most powerful decision-making body in the world, acting as the authoritative voice on matters of international security. Yet it is so often subservient to the conflicting national interests of its constituent members. Nevertheless, we simulate this chamber because it is the institution best placed to address some of the most pressing issues facing the international community.

On behalf UN Youth Australia, congratulations on reaching the national finals of the Evatt Competition!

Evatt is a rare experience, where you’ll meet some of the most engaged, astute, and passionate young people from across Australia. Honouring the Australian statesman, High Court Justice, and diplomat Dr. Herbert Vere Evatt, the Evatt Competition examines the world’s most formidable issues through negotiation and diplomacy. Through collaboration, persuasion and decision making, the Evatt Competition looks to highlight toughest problems can always be tackled, as H.V. Evatt showed in his extensive experience with the United Nations.

The Evatt competition will be long and, at times, difficult. We will challenge you to confront intractable conflicts and tragic disasters, and deliver creative consensus-driven solutions. We will connect you with experts, decision-makers, and working diplomats, for you to ask the hard questions. We will immerse you in a network of passionate, driven, and fiercely intelligent young people.

FROM THE CHIEF JUDGE

Evatt will, however, allow you develop skills, knowledge, and most importantly, friendships that will hold you impeccable stead for your careers and lives.

Congratulations, best of luck, and I look forward to seeing you in Melbourne.

MARK JAMES CONVENOREVATT NATIONAL FINALS 2015

I’d like to give you some advice on how to win the Evatt National Finals. Focus your performance on being the most effective team possible through the lens of the five judging criteria. The winning team won’t necessarily be the smartest, or the most charismatic, or the best researched (although they certainly tend to be!). The winning team will be the one that was most effective at shaping the debate towards their goals.

Best of luck in your preparations, read and research widely and I look forward to seeing you at the end of year!
