Late last month the House and Senate presented their budget proposals, which include the education budget. This is an update to what I wrote earlier on the Governor’s budget. Below are the differences between the three budgets and the estimated impact on next year’s budget for the district.

Let’s look at each important line that is listed below in the table:

The proposals include a $50 -$100 per student increase depending on the proposal for our district and vary in additional funding from $137,377 - $274,754.

Only the Governor’s proposal includes an additional $50 per student for high school students, which would give CLPS an estimated additional $34,907.

Each of the proposals include At-Risk funding for hold harmless districts (such as CLPS) for the first time. The At-Risk funding varies greatly between the Senate’s proposal of an estimated additional $111,540 to the Governor’s proposal of $1,446,780 in restricted monies. Restricted money means you cannot spend it on anything you want. At-Risk funds are similar to Title I funds but are not quite as restrictive.

Only the Senate proposal included a cut in funding for 147a MPSERS retirement cost offset of $247,480.

The Governor’s proposal only gives 50% or less of funding for homeschool students. This is the 2nd year in a row in which he is proposing this. I estimate it would be a loss of revenue of approximately $656,000 to CLPS.

The overall impact, depending on the plan, could be an additional estimated $105,844 - $997,868, which equates to a .4% - 4.5% increase in state funding. As you can see, there are huge differences in each proposal. I am personally rooting for the House proposal to win. I will update the district once things are finalized. This could happen in early May, or it could drag out until mid-June. Since this proposal still has to go through the Senate and House, it could look drastically different, but this is at least a very good starting point.

COMMUNITY SERVICE WITH A SMILE

CLHS students prepared 10,000 bags for the annual Gleaner's

Food Bank food drive as a community service project.

SUPPORTING OUR MARINES

As a service project, students from Mrs. Herrick’s, Mrs. Tippery’s, and Mrs. Kruzsewski's classes as well as Roose staff members collected food and personal hygiene items for our heroes currently serving in the military. Ten boxes of goodies are on their way to the Marine Corps Base in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Great job, Roose Rockets!

ROOSE STAYS GREEN

Roose is an official Michigan Green

School for the 4th year in a row! Green

schools have good indoor air quality, use

natural light, save energy, serve healthy

food, create green schoolyards, and

teach stewardship. Well done!!!

VOLUNTEER RECEPTION

On Wednesday April 19th Peck held its Volunteer Reception. Mr. Roper gave accolades to our volunteers, honoring them on their dedication and hard work to support the Peck students and staff. We really appreciate all they do and are happy they are a part of our Peck family. They had refreshments, won centerpieces, and received "I Volunteer…What's your super power?" notebooks.
