When a Red Flag Flew inMonaghan - The 1919 Monaghan Asylum ‘Soviet’The Friends of Monaghan County Museum invite you to a uniqueoccasion as we mark the centenary of the Monaghan Soviet. Workersin Monaghan Lunatic Asylum went on strike, locked themselves in,raised the Red Flag and declared themselves a Soviet.

An illustrated presentation by Aidan McQuillan based on researchconducted by Brian Kenny from his book ‘When Ireland Went Red –The Soviet Experiment 1918 – 1923’.

MarchThursday 7th March at 8pmMonaghan County Museum marks InternationalWomen’s Day ‘Hidden Women in Plain Sight’: –Dr Jennifer Redmond – NUI MaynoothWith a greater interest in social history, oral history and gender history,the stories of these hidden women have emerged. Many now ask, howcould we forget women who should have been unforgettable? Thistalk will bring these women into public knowledge. Whether they weredomestic servants or emigrant women, rebels, political figures oractivists, Irish history has been told in a particular way that oftenignored the experiences of such women.

Easter Cupcake Decorating Learn the wonderful edible art ofcupcake decorating with craft tutorSamantha Hawe from the CottontailCafe. During this class you will learnhow to create Easter themed cake toppers using modelling fondantand then use these to decorate your own box of cupcakes to takehome and enjoy!

Thursday 25th April at 8pm The Monaghan War ofIndependence FilesJoin us at the museum as we mark thehistoric launch of an incredible onlineresource, which charts the story ofMonaghan during the War ofIndependence from the people whoexperienced it. These incredible first-hand accounts, which were collectedbetween 1965 - 1966 and donated tothe museum in the 1980s are availableas an online database for the first timeon Monaghan County Museum’s website. This event will be markedwith an illustrated talk by Theresa Loftus, Museum Researcher andDeveloper of this unique online resource.

MayTuesday 7th, Thursday 9th,Tuesday 14th & Thursday 16th May (11am – 1pm)Bealtaine Festival 2019 celebrating creativity as we age

Introduction to Jewellery Making We are once again marking this important festival as we host a seriesof workshops with local jewellery maker Lorraine Colleran. These fourworkshops will be delivered over a period of two weeks. Booking Essential.

National Drawing Day ZendoodlingJoin us for a Zendoodlingworkshop, using pattern todevelop design and fine motorskills. Minecraft selfies - using squared paper to create pixelated selfportraits.

August17th – 25th AugustNational Heritage Week Visit the museum during this NationalWeek as we mark the 80thanniversary of the outbreak of WorldWar II and the incredible story ofMonaghan during this time.

SeptemberCulture Night, FridaySeptember 20th at 7.30pmThe Pipes of RossmoreWe will be making history as weunveil the fully restored set of Uilleann Pipes, which belonged to theThird Lord Rossmore and date to the mid 1800s. The pipes weredonated to the museum by the current Lord Rossmore and followingan extensive restoration process will be played for the first time in overa century.

Minecraft Summer CampsWe are very excited to be working with AmmAMultimedia Learning Centre in Armagh to host this digital historysummer camp. Create, explore and reconstruct Rossmore Castle inthe virtual reality world of Minecraft. Also find out some of thefascinating history behind the estate, which once included MonaghanTown!

OctoberThursday October 10th at 8pm“Real Talks” by Alan O’MaraIn association with Monaghan SportsPartnership, we are delighted to welcomeAlan O’Mara, former Cavan GaelicFootballer and Ambassador for the HSE’s‘Little Things’ Campaign as he talks about his battle with depressionand tackles the stigma surrounding this mental health issue. Alan isthe founder of Real Talks and a renowned speaker for his mixture ofhonesty, insight, humour and passion on the topic of mental healthand wellbeing.

NovemberDate TBCThe War of Independence inMonaghan – The DebateJoin us at the museum as we discuss themain events and personalities from the War of Independence inMonaghan. We will be joined by a panel of notable historians andresearchers to debate and investigate this tumultuous time in ourhistory.

We will also be looking forward to the launch of a major new exhibitionon the War of Independence in Monaghan at the museum in early2020.

NovemberWinter Craft Workshops atthe MuseumSaturday November 2nd (1pm – 3pm) (5 – 12 year olds)

Collagraph PrintmakingLearn the art of Collagraph Printmaking. Create your own collagraphplate out of a variety of textured materials. Paint and colour will beused on your plate to create a number of individual prints. Booking Essential.

Saturday November 9th (1pm – 3pm) (5-12 year olds)

Creative Canvas Art Unleash your inner Picasso in this fun 2-hour painting class! Usepattern and paint to create an amazing piece of canvas art to takehome and display. Under the guidance of art tutor Samantha Haweyou will develop your creative skills and learn about colour mixingtechniques. Booking Essential.

Mono – Printing Explore mono-printing using a variety of mark-making techniques tocreate cards and individual pieces of artwork. Booking Essential.

10th – 17th NovemberScience Week The museum will once again be hosting a series of interactiveand engaging workshops throughout Science Week.

Saturday November 30th (1pm – 3pm)Christmas Luminary Jar Make your own Snowman Luminary Jar in this fun, hands on craftclass. Guided by local art tutor Samantha Hawe you will design,paint and stick to create a fantastic light-up festive friend to takehome! Booking Essential.
