founder’s welcome To our many friends and patrons, thank you for your continued support of our work at HeartBright. It is great to see so many of you back as well as so many new faces for our 14th Annual Soiree & Wine Auction. Your support this evening makes it possible for us to continue to reduce risk factors, prevent and delay chronic disease, promote wellness in children and adults, and provide positive, sustainable health changes in our community. We are fortunate to have extraordinary volunteer physicians--Cardiologists, Pulmonologists, Nephrologists, Endocrinologists and a team of Internists--that are the best in our area. They are backed by a loyal team of support volunteers. All work tirelessly to help the existing participants and the 10-12 new patient referrals we receive every day from the area hospitals and other area agencies. 96 percent of our current patients still have no insurance. Still, the greater percentage work two jobs to support their families, yet they have few options to access the cardiovascular resources and medical treatment that they desperately need. Our goal is to identify heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure in our community, to help individuals manage their chronic disease risk factors, and set them on the right path and possibly refer them to a less intense area health clinic. Additionally, we provide continuing education for the community as a whole to learn about metabolic syndrome: heart disease, diabetes and hypertension. We hope that you will enjoy your evening with us as you continue to help HeartBright reach the greater Charlotte community with wellness and prevention services. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. Together we are making a difference in our own hometown. HeartBright, providing health; but more than that, providing hope. Claire & Tom Blocker, Founders HeartBright Foundation

program spotlight HeartBright wants to change the next generation. In 2017 we are launching our comprehensive P21 program which will introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables, engage them in games to encourage movement and exercise, and teach them how to make healthy choices inside and outside of school. We will continue to bring in professional athletes and mentors to motivate and encourage the children to adopt healthy lifestyles that will serve them for years to come.
did you know? Our programs reached over 4,700 people a week in 2016. One in 10 people in our area die from limited access to healthcare services for chronic disease. Only two percent of our patients were eligible to switch to the Affordable Care Act for health coverage by 2016. Half of those lost the coverage within six months due to inability to make their premium payments. 80 new patients are referred to us from local agencies every week. 91 percent of our patients are below the poverty level even though the majority of them work. It costs us $50 to treat one patient for an entire year. 93 percent of all donations made to us go directly to fund our Programs & Services.
what can $100 do? Treat two patients for a year Provide a Thanksgiving meal for five families of four Feed a family of four fresh fruits & vegetables for 2 months Fill 25 patient prescriptions Fund a six week nutrition camp for 12 teens Supply the food for six healthy cooking classes Purchase resistance bands for 20 seniors Sponsor four Walkin’ Buddies teams Grow a 10’x10’ community garden plot
