MINUTES OF THE UNIVERSITY EXTENSION COUNCIL

OF GREENE COUNTY

Date: Monday, August 28, 2017

Place: Springfield-Greene County Botanical Center, 2400 S Scenic Ave, Springfield, Missouri

Attendees: Tony Ahart, Morgan Ash, Joseph Crim, James Garton, Tyler Gunlock, Ann Hall, Joseph Hoffman, Kent John, Katie Keith, Kip Thompson, Samantha Mosier and 4-H Youth Representative Rebekah Presley.

The meeting was called to order at 12:10 pm, by Council Chair, Joseph Crim, who welcomed those in attendance, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Secretary Morgan Ash called roll and it was determined that a quorum was present.

Consent Agenda: A motion was made by Samantha Mosier and was seconded by Joseph Hoffman, to approve the Consent Agenda including the June meeting minutes and the June Treasurer’s report and bills to be paid for the month. Motion to approve passed by unanimous vote.

Citizen Input: There was none.

Council Training: Katie Keith led discussion on suppor ting election and upcoming activi-ties. The Fall donor letter was shared and election nominees were solicited. Names and contact information are needed by November to approach potential candidates.

Great Game of Business: The scorecard for the Food Preservation Program was reviewed. This supply heavy program lost some money due to some unexpected mileage expense incurred by two teachers from Barton County. High photocopy expenses contributed to this too. Eighty attendees participated, which is a good number. Soil tests are behind the projected numbers, but Fall is usually a good time for soil test completion. Donor numbers are ahead of this time last year.

Unfinished Business/Committee Reports:

Century Farm Fundraising: The event is Monday, September 25th at 5:30 pm at the round barn. Basket donations for the fundraising auction are needed. Everyone who donates a $50.00 bas-ket gets a free ticket to the event. There is a double incentive for your name in a drawing for special prizes in recognition for helping out with the Century Farms event. There will be a spe-cial educational session on, "Keeping the Farm In the Family," at 3:00 pm. A suggestion was made to invite prospective council candidates to the event to introduce them to the organization and its activities. An offer was made to print Century Farms flyers for free by Kent John.

Budget Committee: This committee has not met yet, due to the possibility of flat funding. Funding has not been finalized and they will meet when more is known.

New Business:

Excel Project: The Excel Project launches on September 14th for the Western side of the coun-ty. Ten more participants could be accommodated. Each meeting will focus on a different community and learning about issues there. A trip to Jefferson City will take place to meet community leaders.

Regional Staff Changes: Changes are unknown at this time but staff will learn more in Septem-ber, with announcements made in October. Some changes will depend on available space. Greene County Extension has space for a few more, but we will see what happens.

Tiger Ambassador Program: Let David know if you are interested in serving as an athletic am-bassador. A Greene County representative is needed and there are sports perks associated with this service.

Staff and Reaching Out Reports (ROR): Maggie Black's insurance is up for renewal and reports that premiums and benefits have not changed. Jeff Barber gave an update on the seven-year HERO Program. Greene County and Springfield both agreed to participate. Since Decem-ber, solar energy efficiency and improvements have a goal of saving enough money to pay for the improvements. Kansas City and Saint Louis have committed $12 million in economic im-provement positions. Mr. Barber has attempted to generate commitment for funds to pay for this project. Has not been able to find much interest. It appears that so far for now the project is intact. An assessment can be placed on the property as a means of funding the improvements and can be assumed by any future buyer of the property. A Green Award was won for Mr. Bar-ber's presentation in Wyoming.

4-H Report: Elections are next month. Exhibits this summer were a big success. One hundred thirty-two blue ribbons were awarded and 81 exhibits went to the fair.

County Program Director Report: Please help initiate contact with a state legislator to become involved. Please share any ideas for county programming with David Burton.

The meeting was adjourned to closed session regarding personnel matters at 12:50 pm.

Tyler Gunlock moved to adjourn at 1:15 pm and Ann Hall seconded the motion. The idea passed unanimously.

Respectfully submitted by Morgan Ash
