A messagefrom our President

Reflecting on the past year, I am proud of the work of our team. Over a year ago, we updated our mission statement and have focused on “empowering older adults to thrive.” Strategically, we’ve identified ways in which we can grow and continue to fulfill that mission. I am pleased that in the past year, we have accomplished many things and will continue to do the same as we move forward into the next year.

“Service integrity and quality care delivered in culture of compassion and pride.”

• Eventide started a New Employee On-boarding and Mentoring program pilot in Moorhead to ensure a great beginning for all new Eventide employees. With the initial success out of the gate we look to grow this program to our other Eventide campuses in 2018.

• We continue to keep our employee turnover numbers well below industry averages.

• Overall staff and resident satisfaction scores continue to increase and outperform our benchmarks measuring those who “would recommend Eventide.”

“Intentional growth that sustains Eventide’s reputation as a premier provider.”

• With the addition of new programs like assisted living on the Eventide Jamestown campus and the new Fargo Eventide, we are currently ranked as #76 of the top 150 not-for-profit senior living systems in the country. Eventide employs more than 1,400 staff and serves approximately 1,200 older adults every day across six senior campuses in five communities.

• Eventide has outgrown its present leased corporate office space and began evaluation options for a permanent location. We are pleased to be part of a new mixed-use building to be located on the corner of 8th Street and Main Avenue in downtown Moorhead. The new location will allow us to own the second floor with options to purchase the rest of the building at a later date should our needs dictate.

“Community connectedness and contribution.”

• Eventide was pleased to present our “Leaders in Living” thought leader series last fall at the Sanctuary Event Center in Fargo featuring Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. Dr. Lucy Kalanithi, MD, FACP, is the widow of the late Dr. Paul Kalanithi, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air, for which she wrote the epilogue. She is an internal medicine physician and faculty member at the Stanford School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California. The event was moderated by WDAY’s Kevin Wallevand and was very well attended, providing a great discussion about death, dying and living life to the fullest.

• Last winter Eventide led a community discussion called “Silos to Circles” funded by a grant from the Margaret Cargill Foundation, designed to bring about discussion and awareness of the various providers of formal and informal services to older adults in the region. The work has led to Eventide applying for a two-year $150,000 grant to bring better information and coordination tools to Clay County, with special focus on rural areas. We believe this grant will create some outstanding training, coordination and information to all Clay County seniors seeking out information for any number of questions about services available to keep people aging well in their communities.

Sincerely,

Jon Riewer President & CEO

OUR MISSIONTo advance compassionate care and service excellence, empowering older adults, families and communities to thrive.

OUR VISIONTo be the premier care partner through collaborative and innovative solutions.

OUR CORE VALUESChristian-inspired values empower our team members to live Eventide’s mission through dedicated service, warm hospitality, compassionate performance and meaningful relationships.

INTEGRITYWe accept the great responsibility of providing the best care for our residents at all times.

COMPASSIONWe treat each person with kindness, sensitivity and understanding.

ACCOUNTABILITYWe promise to fulfill our mission by using good stewardship of our time, talents and resources.

RESPECTWe recognize and honor the dignity of each resident, family and team member.

EXCELLENCEWe strive to continually improve all that we do, individually and collectively.

QUESTIONS ABOUT SENIOR LIVING? WE CAN HELP.Sifting through information about living options for older adults can be overwhelming.

What kind of housing is there? Is my mom ready for assisted living? How much will it cost? What services will I need as I age? Will Medicare pay for anything? Do I have enough financial resources to live in a senior community? How long can I live comfortably in my current home?

Mary O’Brien wants to take the fear and confusion out of those questions.

Mary is a senior living advisor at Eventide Senior Living Communities, which offers a continuum of care from home services to hospice. Her role, new to the organization, is to serve as a first-stop resource for families and individuals who have questions about senior living options, payment and more.

“Lots of times people don’t even know where to start,” she says. “I’m here to give validity to every question somebody has. Even if you have no idea what to ask, you can call me.”

As a faith-based nonprofit, Eventide strives to meet the needs of the Minnesota and North Dakota communities it serves. Helping families navigate options for aging adults is just one more way it lives out its mission to empower older adults and families to thrive.

Mary sees her role as twofold: being an advocate for families and serving as a resource for the public. She believes strongly

in the value of senior living arrangements that nurture relationships and security. That conviction comes from her own experience.

She has a deep relationship with her own grandparents, often speaking with them via Skype three times a week. Her mother passed away when she was young, and her grandparents stepped in to help raise her. Some of her fondest memories include going to church on Sunday and then having a big family dinner at her grandparents’ home.

“I want every person who is aging to have connections like that, whether they are residents at Eventide or somewhere else,” she says. “Everyone deserves to be valued throughout their entire lives.”

Accompanying families as they gather information and sort through options is a privilege, she says.

Mary has talked with Eventide residents, asking what it was like to move into a senior living community. Those conversations help her to guide others as they seek the right care and amenities for themselves or their loved ones.

“It’s really about helping everybody find their community, that warm, home-like setting where they feel safe, encouraged and engaged,” Mary says. “If I can help take away some of the stress as families make those decisions, I’ll have done my job.”

Growing our missionHappy New Year!

During the holiday season, our thoughts turn gratefully to our donors. YOUR gifts are what help us expand and enhance valuable programming and services for our seniors.

Many extra amenities are made possible by your gifts: blanket warmers that ease a resident’s pain. Comfortable patio furniture that allows our residents to enjoy warm summer days. Improved speakers in the chapel so residents can hear more clearly. These are just a few examples of the wonderful enhancements made possible by YOU.

Thank you for your past donations to the Eventide Foundation. Every gift is appreciated and allows us to grow our mission. You truly do make a difference in the lives of our residents!

I wish you a joyous holiday season and a new year filled with peace and happiness.

Sincerely,

Trudy Latozke Executive Director of Foundation

We will greatly miss John Ladwig, MD, our longtime medical director at Eventide who recently passed away. John served at Eventide for more than 25 years. He was passionate about his role in serving older adults and was a cherished colleague and friend to everyone at Eventide.

A GIFT OF A PATIO PERGOLAThe residents of Eventide Sheyenne Crossings and their family members can now enjoy the warm summer weather in comfort, thanks to a generous donation from Agnes Liudahl. A lovely pergola was added to the west patio area last summer. Agnes’ gift included the pergola, patio furniture, electric outlets, a sound system and colorful shades. It’s a wonderful addition to the campus!

THE COMFORT OF BLANKET WARMERSThanks to grant funds received, the residents of Eventide on Eighth are enjoying the benefits of warmed blankets. Our three new blanket warmers hold eight blankets each and help ease pain and reduce anxiety of our residents. The direct benefit of a warmed blanket may last only a few minutes, but the perception of comfort and psychological well-being last much longer.

THE JOY OF THE DAYDREAM PROJECT The Eventide Daydream Project, a program similar to Make-A-Wish for seniors, recently received a grant for $5,000. The Daydream Project creates moments of joy by fulfilling the dreams of our residents. This project is limited to our skilled care residents, especially those with little or no family contact and limited funds. Examples of wishes granted include baseball game outings, trips to family reunions and concerts. These wishes don’t have to be large – a resident may have their dream fulfilled by ordering their favorite meal from a local restaurant.
