YACHT CLUB NEWS April 2nd is Vessel Safety Day. Members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will be visiting our Marina to perform free safety inspections. Although this is a Yacht Club event, it is open to all boat owners in our Marina. A sign up sheet will be made available near the D dock. Please contact Don Hubert, [email protected], or call 360-510-6799 to express your interest. Summer cruises are being planned at this time. The Vice Commodore’s Cruise will be to the Canadian Gulf Islands and will feature several beautiful stops. If you are a member, please sign up for the cruises as they will be great fun for all. I encourage everyone in the Village to find a way to contrib-ute to the relief effort for the people of Japan. The effects of the devastating tsunami will be felt long into the future. Please refer to our web site (www.bbvyc.org) for more infor-mation about the club. Don Hubert, Commodore

COMMITTEE MEMBERS WANTED Address a Resume or Letter of Interest to the Committee of your choice and send it to the Office. The Office keeps Re-sumes and Letters on file for six (6) months. You can e-mail, mail or drop it off at the Office: e-mail: [email protected] or send to 8055 Cowichan Road, Blaine, WA 98230, the Office hours are 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday, and 9:00am to 2:00pm on Saturday.

SECURITY COMMITTEE The Security Committee met on March 9th, 2011, and as part of normal business reviewed the recent changes made to traf-fic control devices in the Village. Initial concerns over these changes have not come true and things seem to be going well. One change that is having a positive effect is that our Security personnel were released from standing by at the lower gate during school bus pick-up and drop-off times. This was done to have Security watching for violations in other areas during these time periods. As a result some speeding drivers along Salish Road have been cited. Once word gets around that Security is out actively patrolling during these times and driv-ers are being cited, I'm sure this will help keep things under control. Due to the recent increases in fuel prices, coupled with the general economic situation, it behooves us to be extra careful about leaving valuables either in our vehicles or out in plain view around our homes. We do have occasional reports of the loss of power tools, or other easily carried items. Lock your vehicles and stow items out of sight. Everyone should consider installing locking gas caps, especially boat owners since there is often much more fuel available for the taking from boats than from vehicles. Our Security personnel are aware of the need to be more watchful and will do all that they can. But, we need to remember that we have one roving Security person covering some thirteen miles of streets in the Village and it is impossible for them to watch everything. It is up to all of us to be aware and to do what we can to make it harder for thieves to take things from us. For those who may not be aware, there has been a series of vandalism attacks at 8157 Cowichan Road over the past sev-eral months and we have asked everyone in that area to be especially watchful. These attacks have been reported to the Whatcom County Sheriff's Department and the investigation is ongoing. There has not been enough evidence gathered so far to focus on any particular person as a suspect. It does the community no good, and in fact is quite harmful, to speculate on who might be responsible. We have been assured that when enough evidence has been recovered to do so, arrests will be made and prosecution will follow. Until that happens we can best help by being watchful and reporting suspicious activity to Security. Spring is coming, sooner or later, and that means more peo-ple both young and old on our streets, so look out for them. Take care and be safe, Wayne McFee

Come join us for coffee and see what is planned for the summer!! Saint Patrick’s Dinner: Many thanks go to Melanie and Lin-da for organizing, shopping, decorating, and cooking to give us such a great St. Patty’s dinner. The BBV music group pro-vided rollicking tunes to celebrate and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Thanks to all who helped make this an-other terrific annual dinner event. LAST Breakfast: The Last Social Club breakfast of this sea-son is on April 2nd from 8:00am to 10:00am at the Club-house. A wonderful breakfast of biscuits and gravy, scram-bled eggs, pancakes, fruit, sweet rolls, juice, hot chocolate, coffee and tea will be served. The cost is $5 for adults and $2.50 for kids 12 and under. Visit with friends and neighbors around the table and share plans for the summer. Indoor and outdoor plants/flowers/trees are welcome. BBV gardening enthusiasts will be on hand to answer your gardening questions. The plants left over will be donated to BBV for Karla to use around our Village. Chick Flick: The next Chick Flick will be April 19th at 7:00pm. The movie to be shown will be on the Reader Board in April. Bring your favorite drink, a comfortable chair and kick back, relax and enjoy a movie. Popcorn is served. SOCIAL CLUB NEWS CONT’D

ART GROUP The Art group had a busy month with lots of fun and good creative work done. The high light of the month was the grand luncheon and farewell party for Katherine and Jack Graves who are moving to a life care retirement community in Redmond, WA. The member’s husbands and wives came to the party, and it was so special because many old members came to visit each other again. The group was started by Johnny Williams and Ena Grant in the late 1980’s. They both are gone now but are remembered with love and laughter. We Still have about 20 active members and we’d welcome any one interested to join us, every Tuesday 12:30pm to 3:30pm. Contact Linda Lockie for information at 371-8256.

BBV Kids Easter Egg Hunt: Heather and her Easter bun-nies will be hosting an Easter egg hunt at the Clubhouse on Saturday, April 23rd. Please look for the special announce-ment with all the details in this Bulletin, plus information on other BBV kid’s activities. MAY EVENT: Mark your calendars now for the annual Spring Salad Luncheon on May 19th. Details will be provided in the May Bulletin. Welcome Committee: If you are a new owner in the Village and haven’t been contacted by the Welcome Basket lady, please call Judy Lackey at 371-3387 or the Office at 371-7744. We have a warm welcome and gift we would like to deliver to you. Helping Hands: We have a good group of volunteers who are available to provide temporary assistance to those in the Village who are sick, recovering from surgery or otherwise need help. We also have a good supply of medical equipment such as crutches, electric scooter, wheel chairs, shower chairs, walkers, toilet risers, etc. If you or someone you know needs a "helping hand", please call Sandi at (H) 393-4601 or (C) 305-2354. We welcome the donation of sanitized used medical equipment in good condition, especially raised toilet seats and wheel chairs. These items are in high demand. Please remem-ber to return all borrowed equipment in a sanitized condition. A donation jar is appearing at various BBV activities to collect money to purchase a portable wheel chair ramp that can be loaned to BBV residents who need temporary help. If you would like to donate, ask your activity groups where you can drop your donations or contact Sandi at 393-4601. Food Bank Donations: The need for help is ongoing in the community. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the Clubhouse anytime it is open for any event. No food items with an expired ‘use by date’ will be accepted. Please do not forget you can also donate items for the Humane Society, such as old towels, treats, toys, dry and canned dog and cat food, collar and leashes, and creamy peanut butter for Kongs. The Social Club was able to deliver over 300 pounds of food to the Blaine Food Bank just in the last two months. Thank you for your donations and giving hearts.

ADULT POKER NIGHT Enjoy an evening of Texas Hold’Em. Be-ginners are welcome. We meet at the BBV Clubhouse every 2nd and 4th Sunday even-ing from 6:00 - 9:00pm. Contact Nancy Hilborn 933-1355.

Fifty-five to sixty people enjoyed a feast of corned beef and cabbage at our belated St. Patrick’s Day celebration in March. Thanks to all those who helped cook, set up and clean up. We had several new people come this month. Wel-come to you all. Many stayed to play cards so it was another successful evening. Our next pizza night will be Monday, April 18th at the Club-house. We would like to change the time slightly. There will be social hour at 5:30pm and dinner will be served at 6:00pm. This will give us more “talking time” and will give those who work more time to get there before dinner starts. We will try this for the summer to see how it works. The menu in April will be pizza for the first time in 6 months! Please bring a pizza, salad or dessert to share. Coffee and juice will be provided. Bring other beverages as you wish. After dinner, we will set up game tables for those who wish to play cards or board games. Or you can just visit with old and new friends. No reservations required. Call (933-4438) or e-mail me if you have any questions. Judy Sullivan

GOLF NEWS Golf shop opens – On April 1st (Fri.), a re-newed Golf Shop opens for business on week-ends (Fri. – Sun.), then daily starting April 15th. Advance tee times will guarantee desired starting times (371-2026). The 2011 Golf Club Member card (orange), the new 10-round golf card (white), or paid green fees, are now needed to play the course. Over the winter, the Golf Shop received new interior paint, new carpeting, an

expanded seating and TV area, and a new food service area that is open to the entire BBV community. So, whether you golf or not, come on in and enjoy the “in place” to be at BBV! Meet “Joe the Pro” & Golf Shop open house – On April 30th (Sat.), 2:00pm to 5:00pm, an Open House is scheduled for all Villagers and guests to see all the Golf Shop improve-ments and meet Joe Holdridge, BBV’s new Golf Shop man-ager and course pro. The event is open to all Villagers and guests. Refreshments provided! Meet and talk with Joe, mem-bers of the Golf Committee and available staff. Learn what’s planned for the coming golf season and beyond. Share your own thoughts for the golf course, the Golf Shop, and any golfing activities you’d like to see take place. See you there! Mother’s Day Duffer’s Scramble – On May 8th (Sun.), take “the lady of the house” out for a fun, low-cost round of golf at the annual Duffer’s Scramble. Better yet, take the whole family – the more the merrier – or team up with a buddy. The cost is only $5 per person and green fees are waived! The food is free and everyone wins a prize. There’s not a bet-ter deal around, so make this Mother’s Day a day to remem-ber! The May 2011 Bulletin and signs to be posted at the Of-fice, Clubhouse and Golf Shop will provide more details. All BBV residents and guests are welcome. BBV Men’s Golf Club – The BBV Men’s Golf Club is scheduled to start play around mid-May, Thursdays, at 9:00am (8:30am report). Watch this space or check the Golf Shop bulletin board for the official start date. Reminder to all motorized golf cart users – A paid “trail fee” is required whenever using a motorized golf cart on the golf course. Motorized golf carts must now display the 2011 trail fee decal ($80) or pay a 1-day trail fee ($5). Spring-play reminders – The sun is out more often now, but the course is still quite soggy in areas. And, occasionally, we have a frosty morning; please do not tee off until the frost melts. Keep motorized carts on the paved/graveled pathways to avoid damaging wet fairways, carry sand to fill fairway div-ots, and repair ball marks on the greens. Please help keep our special BBV golf course in good playing shape.

Community-wide reminder – For your own personal safety and course preservation, please be aware that the golf course may not be used for non-golfing activities such as walking, jogging, bicycling, remote-control vehicle operation, kite fly-ing, sandbox play, and so on. Thanks for your cooperation. Golf Committee meetings resume – The Golf Committee resumes its monthly meetings on April 14th, 2:00pm, Golf Shop. Meetings are scheduled for the 2nd Thursday of each month, April through October. Anyone may attend these meetings. One vacant position remains on the Golf Com-mittee; if interested, please contact the BBV Office or Jim Macmillan, chairperson (371-2933). See you on the tee at BBV!

PS. If you would like to get on the Joe Golf Pro e-mail distri-bution list, please give your e-mail to either the BBVCC Of-fice or Joe himself when you see him. Thank you!

The music group had a great time at the March 12th Irish Sessions, thanks to a wonderful audience. The 50-some peo-ple who attended really knew how to have a good time! Our sincere thanks to all who came to enjoy the sessions with us. Be sure to stop by and thank our sponsors--Noisy Neighbor Music, Mike Kent, The Market at Birch Bay, the Bay Center Market--for their support of BBV's Irish Sessions. Our kids' sessions were sparsely attended, but those who came had fun singing songs with us, coloring pictures of mythical creatures, and winning prizes. Guest musicians Rick Whitaker and Wayne McFee entertained with “Patty McGinty's Goat” and some good old Irish music on flute and guitar. Our younger guests treated us to a couple of rounds of “Jingle Bells.” We're hoping we'll see more musicians at next year's after-noon sessions. A glaring omission on my part was failing to introduce our group at the Pubhouse Session: Sherrie Bakke on fiddle, man-dolin and Irish drum; Agnes Doutre on vocals and guitar; Chris Doutre on keyboard; myself (Cathy Gort) on vocals, mandolin and fiddle; Rich Gort on vocals and guitar; Eric Holmquist on vocals, harmonica, guitar and Irish drum; Steve Hyde on mandolin; Tom Kimberly on vocals; Judy Osman, vocals, hospitality and kids' activities; Jim Young on vocals. It's a stalwart group that managed to hold up through 3-4 hours of afternoon activities, followed by an evening perfor-mance of 2 ½ hours. I'm sure there were more aching feet and legs than just mine! This was our first annual Irish Ses-sions, and we plan to be back next year with more rousing, funny and tear-jerking songs. If you have any favorite Irish songs you'd like us to work on, email your request to [email protected]. Any song by, for, about, or in some way connected or seemingly connected to the Irish is fair game. On March 19th we were pleased to perform some Irish songs for the Social Club's annual St. Pat's Day dinner, and enjoy a wonderful corned beef dinner. We want to thank the Social Club for their ongoing support of our music program. We enjoy the camaraderie and the opportunity to share our mu-sic. Our music nights for the next couple of months will concentrate on “popular” music classics, with Agnes Doutre sharing many of the songs that she knows from that genre. We'll also mix in a few folk and traditional American songs. At this point we have no performance scheduled until next Christmas, but watch the newsletter. If we decide to do something, we'll announce it here. Monday Night Music is held at 7:00pm at the Clubhouse, every Monday night except the 3rd Monday of the month (which is pizza night). We're also holding a special bluegrass jam, Thursday, April 7th, at 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Clubhouse. All are welcome to come and listen, and anyone who sings or plays an instru-ment is welcome to join. For more information, call Cathy at 371-3852.
