2 | Newark Strawberry Festival 2016

Greetings and welcome to the 33rd annual Newark Strawberry Festival.

Looking back to the humble beginnings of the festival all those years ago, no one could have predicted that a small local event created to celebrate the heritage and history of the strawberry industry that once thrived in the area would become a mid-major sized festival in the great State of Ohio. Today, visitors and vendors alike come from all over Ohio as well as other states and even Canada to enjoy our festival, making Newark a must see tourism destination.

Our goal each year is to provide an event that can be enjoyed by the entire family while at the same time giving them the opportunity to create memories that will last a lifetime. In addition to lots of great food and fantastic amusement rides, we strive to provide a wide variety of vendors that can appeal to visitors of all ages. From arts and crafts vendors to vendors selling trinkets and toys for children, everyone should find something that they like at the festival.

The members of the Newark Kiwanis Club are proud to showcase not only the Newark Strawberry Festival, but also the unique and historical Downtown Newark buildings architecture, the one of a kind Licking County Courthouse, and the local businesses that serve our community.

At this time the downtown area of Newark and the Licking County Courthouse are undergoing a major construction and renovation project that will continue through 2017. Some of the

changes are already evident, and once the project is completed, the entire downtown area will be transformed into a wonderful and beautiful setting for all to enjoy and be proud of.

With the creation of the new and amazing Canal Market Plaza in place, Downtown Newark has much to offer visitors, including The Midland Theater, The Works Museum and numerous businesses and restaurants that are available for your enjoyment. We would like to encourage everyone to take the time to stop and visit all of these businesses while you are here for the festival, or plan to make a return trip at your convenience.

Thank you,Chuck JacksonNewark Strawberry Festival Director & Coordinator

The Newark Kiwanis Club welcomes you to the 33rd Annual Newark Strawberry Festival. This year the festival, which is located just east of the Courthouse Square in downtown Newark, will be held on June 3rd, 4th and 5th. The festival has become a tradition for residents of Newark and surrounding areas. Local residents and visitors from out of town wait patiently all year for the Strawberry Festival and the return of one of its most craved delicacies: The Newark Kiwanis Strawberry Shortcake.

Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one child at a time. A large portion of our local fundraising supports youth activities at Camp O’Bannon and Kiwanis Park. Founded in 1913, Camp O’Bannon provides a free summer camp experience to over 400 deserving local youths every year. We are very proud of its mission and heritage. Kiwanis Park, located next to the camp, provides a home for youth baseball leagues. Besides our support of Camp O’Bannon and Kiwanis Park, here are just a few of the many other ways the Newark Kiwanis Club has continued its mission of community service: Our sponsorship of the Key Clubs at Newark Catholic and Newark High School Kiwanis programs where motivated students participate in community service projects. Our donations to the Salvation Army, Mental Health America of Licking County, Shelter for New Beginnings, United Way, Newark City Schools, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Licking and Perry Counties. Our award of a yearly college scholarship. The partnership of Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate deadly tetanus among babies and mothers in 39 countries where proper medical care is scarce.

We thank the many volunteers who donate hundreds of hours to help make this annual festival so successful. We would also like to thank the many companies and individuals who financially support the Newark Kiwanis Club and our fundraisers: The Newark Strawberry Festival, Pancake Day, and Fish Fry. Please take the time to browse through this event program and enjoy the entertainment and amusement rides. We ask that you support the many craft and food vendors which have attended the festival for many years.

The Newark Kiwanis Club invites you to join us for lunch at our weekly meetings any Monday, from 11:45 am to 1:00 pm, at the DoubleTree by Hilton located at 50 N. 2nd Street in Newark.Additional festival information is also available at www.newarkstrawberryfestival.com or email us at [email protected].

Newark KiwanisStrawberry ShortcakeNewark Kiwanis Club members, families and friends gather on the eve of the festival to begin preparing the strawberries for the famous Strawberry Shortcakes.

They start with 225 flats of strawberries, which are washed, sliced, sweetened and packed in containers for the Festival. The sugar enhances the natural flavor and draws out the juices of the strawberries, creating an incredible combination when added with ice cream, whipped cream and shortcake.

Over one thousand delicious shortcakes are prepared by the staff of Camp O’Bannon. The vanilla and strawberry ice cream is made at Velvet Ice Cream at Ye Olde Mill, locally located in Utica. You can’t miss the yellow trailer where Newark Kiwanis members and friends volunteer to pile high the sweetened berries on ice cream and shortcakes, topped with whipped cream, to serve this mouthwatering treat to Festival goers. The scrumptious Strawberry shortcakes have truly become one of the time-honored attractions at the Newark Strawberry Festival.
