MONDAY, MAY 25MEMORIAL DAYMemorial Day for many Americans, conjures up images of hamburg-ers, hot dogs, swimming pools, and summertime . But the last Mon-day in May serves, most importantly, as a time to honor those who died while fighting in the U.S. Armed Forces. It’s a holiday steeped in somber American history and tradition. The day actually began as “Decoration Day,” following the Civil War, when mourners placed flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers. Yes, Memo-rial Day has also come to signify the “unofficial” start of summer, but let’s remember the heroes who made it all possible.

MAY 28SHAVOUT

Shavuot—or the Feast of Weeks—

is a Jewish holiday that has both an agricul-tural and biblical

significance. Agriculturally, it marks the wheat harvest in Israel. Biblically, it com-memorates the day God gave the nation of

Israel the Torah on Mount Sinai.

The holiday also book-ends the

Counting of the Omer, a ritual-

ized counting of each of the 49 days between Passover and

Shavuot.

BUILD AT HOME: DAYLIGHT IN A BOTTLEExplore how a water bottle can help you read a secret message from a friend, or light up a room with free, clean energy from the Sun.

You’ll need: Large paper grocery bag; Scissors; Flashlight; Clear plas-tic bottle, filled with water and tightly capped. Missing an item? Use your engineering creativity to come up with a replacement! What to do: 1. Open the grocery bag and have a friend make a se-cret message or drawing on the bottom, in a corner. 2. Cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag – at the opposite corner. 3. Find a dark location. Shine your flashlight into the bag and look inside the bag for your friend’s secret message or drawing. 4. Next, try using the water bottle. Put the water bottle inside the bag and shine the flashlight through it. Is it easier to see your friend’s secret message or drawing? 5. Use your water bottle to capture daylight. See ideas below: a) Outside, build a fort out of large cardboard boxes and use your water bottle to light up the inside. With help from an adult, cut a 2 ½ inch hole in the “ceiling” of a cardboard box and put the water bottle half in/half out of the hole. b) Put your water bottle on a win-dow sill in a room with darkening curtains. Some light will come in through the bottle, but the curtains will keep out the heat and cold. The water bottle solves the problem of glare from the flashlight. The water scatters, or spreads, the light all over the inside of the bag so that you can see better.

MY ADDRESS TO THE GRADUATING SENIORS – CORONAVIRUS EDITION

[Author’s note: Since 1997, it’s been my tradition to give a graduation commencement speech – whether I’ve been invited to or not. This year, in light of the Coronavirus quarantines, I gave my speech re-motely. Below are excerpts from this year’s stirring oratory. You might want to have a Kleenex nearby. – TEJ]

“Dear students, faculty, staff, and mascot of this great institution. It is indeed an honor to almost be here with you for this video com-mencement address. Thanks for attending – I know you’d rather be playing Call of Duty.“ “Dear students, faculty, staff, and mascot of this great institution. It is indeed an honor to almost be here with you for this video com-mencement address. Thanks for attending – I know you’d rather be playing Call of Duty.“ Congratulations, Class of 2020. I am deeply honored to be your commencement speaker. Due to the current health crisis, I almost had to bail and ask my close personal friend Barack Obama to fill in. Luckily, I am virtually here for you via Zoom, though I long to be strolling on the hallowed grounds of your renowned university, checking out the Tri Delts. I greet you from my couch in my man cave, draped in formal com-mencement speaker garb – cap, gown and fuzzy bunny slippers – filled with pride for what you have achieved – well, most of you, anyway. Accompanying me is my trusty feline, Bonkers. Wave to the camera, Bonkers. First a point of business. While a cap and gown are optional for this unique graduation ceremony, a dress code of boxers and bras is a tad too informal. So, for those of you with your video cameras on (Bonkers has counted 67 so far), I would thank you to please don a bathrobe. Our nation is living through a nightmare unlike any in living memo-ry – more upsetting even than the 2011 breakup of The White Stripes. I have faith that we will survive, providing we stick together (albeit six feet apart) and remember to WIPE and WEAR. Wipe down everything you touch and wear a mask. Oh, and remain in your parents’ base-ment until a vaccine is found – which according to my doctor’s latest estimate looks like October 2023. Speaking of parents, join me in acknowledging all the sacrifices they’ve made over the past two to three decades, preparing you for this moment. From teaching you to ride a bike to helping you erupt that volcano in 4th grade (let’s face it, your mom did most of the work), to chewing out your English teacher for not giving their angel a B+, your parents were always there to support you. And they will continue to do so, for God knows how much longer. Let’s give these heroic folks an enthusiastic round of applause – by clicking on the clapping hands icon at the top of your screen. Today we reflect on the past four years – or seven in the case of you accounting majors who flunked statistics, changed your major to astronomy, bailed on that and committed to astrology, only to dis-cover there have been no job openings for astrologists since…, well, since ever. Whether you pursued a degree in engineering, psychology or Me-

dieval French Poetry, there is one thing you all have in common: a future with limitless opportunities in exhilarating enterprises, such as delivering groceries or restocking the cleaning products in Costco – both of which are booming these days. Disappointment abounds. No hanging out at the mall, no concerts or bar hopping. Such a bummer that the final frat party blowout was cancelled. Nice try with your good pitch citing the germ-killing ben-efits of ingesting massive quantities of beer. Consider celebrating with your mates via Zoom. On the positive side, you won’t need a designated driver to get home. Thanks to the economic collapse (and your impressive 2.3 GPA), that dream job you were hoping for in Silicon Valley has evaporat-ed, like a puff of smoke, carried off by the wind, elusive, never to be found…. I apologize. I was thinking of my book deal that just got canned. Even worse, your graduation trip to Italy had to be scrapped because of the pandemic. My advice: Don’t underestimate the plea-sures of a hometown staycation. I hear some pubs and parks may reopen later this month. And Frisbee golf is making a comeback. It’s entirely normal to have pangs of dread about what is to come, given your lack of any discernible skills and a college debt that ex-ceeds the GNP of Cameroon. Add to that the looming beef short-age, threats of nuclear attack from North Korea, the alienation of our NATO allies, and the specter of Trump’s re-election, it’s no wonder you’re a tad on edge. However, I say, “Have hope. Think of your glass as half full” – okay, maybe 10% full is more accurate. Though your situation may appear bleak, there are plenty of rea-sons to feel hopeful about the world today – if you happen to be wildlife. It’s an incredible time to be a peacock or mountain goat. They can roam almost anywhere they like lately. As you embark on this next exciting chapter of life, I counte-nance you to go out and make a change. And by “go out”, I mean, go outside to your backyard and get some fresh air. And by “make a change” I mean your clothes. You’ve been wearing the same T-shirt and sweatpants for three weeks. Take a shower, while you’re at it. I can smell you from here. Eventually you will change the world. But for the moment, just change your expectations instead. I hear Amazon is hiring forklift operators. Graduates, I encourage you to remain positive – unless we are talking about COVID-19, then by all means, I pray you’ll remain neg-ative. Don’t forget to wash your hands, use Purell, and practice safe social distancing. And think of all the rent you’ll save by living in your parents’ basement for the next 24 – 36 months. In closing, my advice as you stare into the abyss that is your future, is … um … uh … Sorry. I got nothing. Nada. I’m just glad I’m not graduating this year. That would totally suck. So, good luck. There’s a 57% chance things will get better … someday. Now please take a second to click on the RATE ME button. If I earn 4.5 stars, the university will email me a $100 Target gift card. Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Go make yourself useful. You can start by emptying the dishwasher. It’s not going to empty itself. [CLICK. The speaker has left the meeting.]

MEMORIAL DAY

Memories of wars long done,Evoked each year by martial displays.Mothers with a Gold Star instead of a sonOnce felt pride at the return of peaceful days.Regrettably, the peace did not last.Individuals again were required to die,As nations and rulers tried to hold fastLands where dreams of freedom lie.

Dutifully the cemeteries again are filled,As the wealthy and powerful make sure the world is billed,Yes, once more, for this, youth must kill and be killed.

I got a friend who called me up asking if I had some colored glass he could get his hands on. Sure, I said, whatcha need it for? He ex-plained that he was making mermaid sculptures and decorating them with everything from crushed seashells off the beach of Baby Island to possibly pennies as mermaid scales. He needed some glass to break into pieces and glue onto the mermaid’s tail. Okay, I said, I got some scrap glass you can use, anything to help a fellow glass breaker. My pal is a real estate agent. Meaning, he’s in the same boat as a lot of us here on the lackadaisical South End, folks who basically are self-employed, work when we want, play most of the time. If we can handle the guilt of not embracing the Protestant Ethic, we’re fairly happy campers. But now, with this Pandemic Panic, the entire island has self-quarantined. Every manjack of us is holed up in Paradise wondering what the world will look like after the plague subsides. Whatever jobs were out there, they may not be after the dust settles and the virus leaves stunned survivors in its wake. Whatcha making the mermaids for, anyway? I asked my buddy, thinking he was embarked on a mercy mission, maybe take a few to the nursing homes in the area since he’s a pretty philanthropic guy, the kind who takes firewood to shut-ins in the winter or organizes trash pickups alongside the roads. What do you mean? he asked. I mean what’s your plan with these mermaids is what I mean. No reason, he said, just bored. So you got four mermaids done, now you’re making more? I was thinking about the 5 guitars I’d just made, no good reason. “You need to be careful, Zorba,” I warned. Whaddaya mean? he asked, a slight tremor in his voice. “Can’t you see, man, the thing has got a hold of you. One or two mermaids, sure, I get it. A little hobby to fill the time while the plague passes by. But the third? And a fourth? You can see where this is going. Be careful is all I’m saying.” “It’s harmless,” he protested. “Just something to keep me from be-ing bored. What’s wrong with that, Skeeter? “What’s wrong?” I asked. “You’re playing with a loaded gun, my friend. Another mermaid you’ll be hooked. Sure, it’s a few seashells glued on, then it’s some broken glass, some pennies to make scales, next thing you’ll be making full size sculptures, casting bronze, there’s no telling where it leads. You’ll end up like the rest of us on this desolate hellhole of an island.” “What do you mean? What are you talking about?” he fairly squeaked. I hated being the bearer of bad news but hellfire, some-one has to speak Truth to the moths circling the flame. “What I’m talking about is falling into the trap. One mermaid okay, two, sure, but the addiction starts there and next thing you know ….” I paused to let this sink into his bald skull. “What?” he asked, “Next thing I know what??” “You become like the rest of us, Zorba, you become an artist.” “I’m just killing some time, Skeeter, I’m just bored,” he protested. “That’s what we all said. If we were honest. Just … be … careful, that’s all I’m saying. We got too many lost souls here now, we don’t need some retired realtor joining the ranks.” Next day when I took him the glass he said he wanted more colors, not just the blues he originally requested. I shook my head, sure, why not. Too late, I could tell, nothing for it but to take him the whole crayon box. Sometimes you just can’t talk folks off the ledge.

GIFTS It has been a gift to be able to write for the Crab Cracker for many years, but as all things come to an end, so must my pleasure of sharing my writing with this community. Moving on to Alaska in search of gold. My greatest appreciation goes out to Malynda and Jim Shipley, Val Paul Taylor, Jack Gunter, AJ, Nick, Sister’s Cole, Cooper, and Squire, Nicole and Jade, Elfa and Tom, “The Arugula’s (Angel and Alyssa)”, SK1 (RIP), Chief Norm Link, John and Caitlin, Isaac, John, Max, Robert, Oklahoma, “Caramel” Cat Supernavage Olson, Clinton Hollingsworth, the Wrecking Ball, Lisa and her girls, Ellen, beach Grandpa and Grandma, and Carston. Nothing is at it seems near the conundrum and vortex of singular-ity. It’s an endless series of fractal mirrors tearing apart in transpar-ent calm. At its outer edges the future is collapsing. From the sunrise-soaked shoreline, whale breach and spout trav-els from miles away through tinnitus as Stephanie wakes up in early morning slumber. Struggling in wake, she pushes her pillows off the bed, finds her feet on the shag, then wanders into the rain showers of yesterday’s murmur. As she washes her face, millions will perish of starvation. Spontaneous equilibrium, the clock will never rewind. Beauty in evolution entrained in ruts, the bugs bur-row deeper as cyclicity turns asunder. Salish ghosts line the shoreline.

It has been a gift for us as well to have Jesse’s writings and artistry with-in our magazine. Jesse has a kind and adventurous soul and it was all reflected in his writings and in his fabulous collage pieces. We will miss him and the community will seem smaller without him. Thanks Jesse! Enjoy the “The Land of the Midnight Sun.” -Jim & Malynda Shipley

The Stanwood Area Historical

Society asks, “Did You Know?”

“Stanwood Story”, written for the

Stanwood News by Alice Essex.

A change of thinking was recommended in a letter from an old-tim-er, who said, “You may have thought it was all right to get dead drunk when horseback riding was the only means of transportation, for in those days the dear old faithful animal would carry you safely home if you were able to sit in the saddle. If not, the sight of the rider less horse coming in the gate revealed the whole story to your wife and children. “But in the present time of speeding automobiles and airplanes, we must have sobriety for the suffering and destruction resulting from drunkenness is not confined to your family alone, but is scat-tered broadcast. There can never be real happiness in a home where there is drunkenness.” “Fooling ourselves,” “Obey the Law” and “License It” headlined other contest letters; still others dwelt upon scriptural and health aspects. Government control, as in Canada, was heartily recommended in an-other communique, which concluded as follows: “How much further would we get with our younger generation to say to them, “Thou Shalt Not Drink”? But rather if you must drink, drink under government control and supervision. This would spell defeat to the bootlegger and moonshiner and do away with the hip flask and attending evils.” Such were the expressions of the public pulse in the NEWS contest of 1930. Incidentally, winner of the $10 prize was a woman from Vic-toria District. In other issues, the editor quipped in lighter vein on fashions, farm-ing and cities. For example, these seem pertinent to today’s world: “What troubles us about long skirts, is what women will NOT wear next.” “The only fairly definite factor in farming is expense.” “The city that doesn’t need wider streets is dead.” That spring the editor’s, “Wise or Otherwise”, came forth with com-ments, also akin to present day happenings. Here are a few: “We hear of thieves going into people’s barns and butchering cattle under cover of darkness and getting away scott-free with the booty. Rumors come to our ears of mere babes filching bicycles. Gangs of young thugs work in our community and consort with members of some of our best families, young sprouts violate the game laws and if a warden says anything to them, they clout him across the head with a club. “Have things come to such a pass that those who would like to see law and order maintained, must whisper their sentiments? It is high time that law-loving citizens form an organization to combat such examples of lawlessness as were displayed in Everett Monday of this week. Our public officials seem powerless in stamping out crime. It appears that if we are to preserve our rights, some drastic action must be taken. “Officers attempt to arrest someone and they are promptly knocked down and the culprit gets away. You do not often hear of any punitive action or corrective measures being taken. The NEWS does not relate this for the purpose of criticizing law enforcement officials of the community. The idea is this: if we are going to let law break down altogether and rely on our claws and teeth to defend our homes, why employ officers at all? Let us demand that law enforce-ment officials function as they should and go down the line to a man, backing them up in their efforts.”

MEMORIAL DAY:

Since the late 1950’s on the Thursday just

before the Memorial

day, around 1200 soldiers of the 3d U.S. Infantry place

small American flags at each of the more

than 260,000 gravestones at Arlington

National Ceme-tery. They then patrol 24 hours

a day during the weekend to ensure that each flag re-

mains standing.

CASA’S PET OF THE WEEK:Meet OLIVER! This sweet boy is new to CASA and is still adapting. He is a very calm, and quiet kitty. Oliver can be shy at first as he is very unsure of the world. He has a sweet demeanor and he will warm up in a home environment. Oliver has lived with other cats and has done well. He would do best in a quieter home.

NOAH’S PET OF THE WEEK:BUTTERCUP AVAILABLE BY APPT. Buttercup’s owner recently passed away and she’s having a hard time ad-justing. She will need a patient adopter willing to give her time to warm up. We have learned that food is a way to her heart (which explains why she’s a little on the chunky side.) Buttercup would love a quiet place to call home for her golden years.

HONORING THE GRADUATESAll of us at Stanwood Haggen want to honor the 2020 graduating seniors from SHS and Lincoln Hill. We will be wearing Spartan gear and/or red in the month of June on all weekends. We are also asking parents to bring in a 4x6 or 5x7 picture of your student with their name on the front of it. We will be posting the pictures we receive all around our store to honor these well deserving kids. Pictures can be turned into Guest Services starting Sunday 5/17. Thank you.

COLD WATER SAFETYIt may be over 75 degrees this weekend, but the water is COLD! Many drowning victims die within the first few minutes of unexpectedly falling into cold water. Project yourself— wear a life jacket! #coldwa-tersafety #WearItWA. – Source: Island County Sheriff’s Office

WELFARE CHECK PHONE CALL PROGRAMThe Island County Sheriff’s Office Citizen Volunteers, in cooperation with Island Senior Resources, have set up a program to assist mem-bers of our community who may have found themselves isolated as a result of the Covid 19 pandemic. This short-term program is de-signed for vulnerable Island County residents who would benefit from a daily welfare check phone call during this pandemic. This pro-gram is sponsored by the Island County Sheriff’s Office and carried out by the Island County Sheriff’s Citizen Volunteers. This program is for Island County residents only. The program is currently set to only last for the duration of the State of Washington Stay at Home Order. How the program works: Once you have signed up, a volunteer will call you once daily between 9:00 and 10:00 am just to check in with you. If you don’t answer, the volunteer will call again within about 15 minutes. If there is no answer on the second call, a Deputy Sheriff will be dispatched to your address to check on your wellbeing. If you, a friend or loved one would benefit from this service, please phone the following number to enroll. A volunteer will ask a few questions that will provide us with enough information to serve you. The questions will only be related to your address and emergency contact infor-mation. You may provide general medical concerns that may be rel-evant to first responders if you choose. We look forward to serving you. Call to sign up! 360 – 572 - 2477.

HOPE UNLIMITED ANTI-HUMAN TRAFFICKINGINITIATIVE SHARES HOPE IN UNCERTAINTY Would you let your child walk down a dark alley alone, well it is the same thing when your child is on the Internet? During these times of uncertainty with the COVID-19 virus many youths are walking down a dark alley alone and they do not know who is out there waiting for them. It is because they’re isolated from friends socially and have that one connection and outlet to social networking through devic-es. Many of you wonder what effect COVID-19 and the response is having on trafficking. The reality is we do not know and cannot know for certain, but we should be deeply concerned. We tend to worry about how the economic effects of this virus will increase the vul-nerabilities that make youth susceptible to sex and labor trafficking. In the meantime, if you are looking for ways to help in communities, start by helping your own children by safeguarding what they are doing online. You may have to set parent controls monitoring de-vices reducing the risk to the online world. Teach them good skills like critical thinking and boundaries. Convince them that you can listen and without judgment. Please watch for these warning signs that they may be communicating with a Predator: 1. They begin to withdraw from family and friends. 2. They are obsessed with online activities. 3. Phone calls or gifts received from other adults you do not know. 4. Isolating themselves for hours. 5. .............. Immediate changes in their behavior. 6. Hiding their phone or devices. Here are a few good websites for parents to get good trusted information: 1. NetSmartzKids.org: This website is sponsored by The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. They provide downloadable videos and resources on different elements of cyber safety. 2. Bark.us: This website connects you with your child’s social network, text messages and email accounts. Bark is a parental control phone monitoring app to help keep kids safer online. 3. Common Sense Media (CSM): The Common Sense Website includes two domains and you can set your preferences on both. Commonsense.org (education, resources and privacy evaluations) and commonsensemedia.org (media reviews, advice, policy, and research). Remember where children play, preda-tors prey. It is our hope that all children will be safe from those who put them at risk, especially now.

MEMORIAL DAY

was first cele-brated on May 30, 1868. It was

observed by placing flowers on the graves of Union and Confederate

soldiers during the first national celebration. Gen.

James Garfield made a speech

at Arlington National Ceme-tery, after which

around 5,000 participants

helped to deco-rate the graves

of the more than 20,000 Union

and Confederate soldiers who were buried

there.

IN MEMORIUM: JAMES GLENN TURK (3/14/29 – 4/29/2020) Jim Turk, age 91 of Fairhaven, passed away peacefully at home on April 29, 2020 surrounded by family. Born in Enumclaw, WA, the only child of Mildred Tougaw and Joseph Jacob Turk, he was raised in Waukegan, IL. Jim embraced every day with gusto. He savored each conversation and relished beauty in nature and cultures around the world. His advice would be to “always take the scenic route.” He was a graduate of Waukegan High School and the University of Iowa. While stationed as a captain with the U.S. Air Force in Fukuoka, Japan, he met the love of his life, Michie Sugimoto; they married in Japan in 1957. After a Kyoto honeymoon they be-gan their married life in Evanston, IL. His career began at Pan Amer-ican Airways. Relocating to the west coast in 1960, he worked as an account executive in the cosmetics industry in California and later Washington. Jim was a lover of sunlight, strong coffee, dark choc-olate, all citrus, a good crusty bread, the nuances of the English language, alliteration, libraries, New Yorker cartoons, and dabbling in languages (Spanish, Japanese, French and a little Farsi). He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years; his cross-cultural family of 3 children: Lia (Kamran); Trina (Jonathan) and Carter (Debbie) and 4 grandchildren: Kima (Gwendolyn), Kalina, Taylor and Talus. Memorial donations may be made to the Camano Island Schoolhouse Founda-tion or the Nature Conservancy camanoschoolhouse.com or nature.org. Estamos contigo, Diego. “See you on the other side.”

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING ACTIVE NESTSIt’s that time of year again, where many birders are tempted to take photos of any bird nests they come across. Unless you are far from the nest and taking the photo with a telephoto lens, PLEASE DO NOT GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO TAKE A PHOTO. (Caps for emphasis, not shouting.) If you’ve stumbled upon it by accident, move along quickly. Spending time looking at a nest, especially if you’re taking an up-close photo, not only causes undue stress to the birds, BUT YOU MAY VERY WELL BE SHOWING A PREDATOR WHERE THE NEST IS. Crows, jays, cats, raccoons, squirrels are all predators that feed on eggs or nestlings (or even an adult bird sitting in the nest), are always watching, and miss nothing. Thank you…Sally Dinius.

CASA CONTINUES TO SERVEOn May 8th our website adoptable pet list showed ZERO animals, something that has never happened before. Behind the scenes, however, CASA continues to fulfill the mission of “Bringing togeth-er animals in need and caring people, forever enriching their lives”, one animal at a time. For the 27 animals that came through the shel-ter in April, their lives were helped. What accounted for the reduced number of animals? CASA decided very early to focus on getting the many adoptable animals at the shelter into permanent homes. Thanks to an adoption special the effort was very successful. Since then fewer strays have been brought to the shelter perhaps because the cats and dogs were enjoying having their family home, people sheltering inside never noticed the wandering animal or they were concerned about physically picking up the animal and keeping it until they could make an appointment. Surrender counts are down because people who were staying home finally “had time to care” for their pet and realized the joy a pet can provide. Meanwhile, the staff is at the shelter every day, caring for the animals and deep cleaning the shelter and working on tasks they haven’t had time for with more animals at the shelter. The biggest change has been that the shelter has been closed for browsing and the requirement for appointments. Watching the reader board can be fun, but since an-imals come in and are adopted quickly, the best way to know how many animals are available is to view the adoptable animals on the CASA website, www.camanoanimalshelter.org and follow CASA on Facebook at www.facebook.com/camanoshelter for updates.

BIRTHDAYS ARE A BIT BRIGHTERwhen the CIFR crews come by. Harper celebrated her 4th birthday with a surprise visit from Sparky! If you’re a Camano resident, and you’d like our crews (and Sparky) to help celebrate your child’s birth-day, email us at [email protected]. Include your name, your child’s name and birthday, their age, and your address and phone number. (Children age 18 or younger please).

KAYAKERS:Please put your name and phone number on your kayak! Also in-clude an ICE (in case of emergency) number. We get a lot of calls for missing or unattended kayaks, or from people who see what ap-pears to be a kayak adrift, with no person visible. It takes time and re-sources to search for potential missing people. When you add your name and phone number to your kayak, it’s easier for us to reach out and determine if a person is really missing. Thank you! - Camano Island Fire & Rescue.

MEMORIAL DAY:

Three years after the Civil War ended, on May 5, 1868, the head of the Grand Army of the Republic

(GAR) established Decoration Day as a time for the nation to deco-rate the graves of the war dead

with flowers. Maj. Gen. John A. Logan declared that Decoration Day should be

observed on May 30. This date was chosen because

flowers would be in bloom all over

the country.

EMERGENCY CHILD CAREAlthough our branches are closed, the Y is still actively supporting our community by providing Emergency Child Care at 11 locations throughout Snohomish County. Caitlin, a healthcare worker, shares the positive impact YMCA Child Care has had on her daughter, Aali-yah. Aaliyah has been enrolled in the Marysville Family YMCA Before and After School Care program for the past two years. “It has been exceptionally hard for Aaliyah to understand why we are not able to stay at home with her. Knowing that she is safe and taken care of every day at the YMCA gives us incredible peace of mind. It is so refreshing to hear about all the fun activities she participates in throughout the day. Aaliyah recently told me about playing kickball with the staff and the other kids and decorating cupcakes. These lit-tle things keep a smile on her face and help her forget how different everything is in the world right now. The YMCA has also stepped up and provided academic support. Homeschooling with Zoom meet-ings and classwork deadlines while still working full-time made me wonder how we could accommodate this new schedule. The YMCA staff facilitates Zoom meetings and assists with assigned classwork! They stepped up and provided extra support; we were not disap-pointed. The level of care and attentiveness the staff display is ex-cellent and their work ethic should be mirrored at every childcare facility. Thank you to the YMCA and the staff for all that they do!”

Jon and Elaine Stevens have

sold their little handyman busi-ness and retired to their farm for the third time.

Their ducks and chickens are re-

lieved for they say there are many tales needing to

be told.

LAWNS TO LETTUCE

There is something about a crisis which takes people back to basics. Now that toilet paper has filled the cupboards and closets of our country, we seem to be turning to our kitchens. What do we have and what do we need and how do we get it?

Folks are discovering what farmers have known for generations, that kitchen cupboards open directly into a good garden.

It’s tempting to hire a rototiller and grind up the soil into a soft bed for tucking in plants from the store. However, those who look at the soil closely (known as soil scientists) tell us there are worms down there and fungus (both of which feed the plants and get fed by them but that’s another story) and a multitude of other friends for whom rototilling is fatal. There is a better, easier way.

Pick your area of your lawn which gets lots of sunlight and mow it as short as you can. Give it a good watering…an inch of water would be great.

Cut and flatten cardboard boxes (remove all the tape and plastic la-bels) to one layer thick. Cover the area of lawn you are going to turn into tomatoes and cabbage and carrots and lettuce and don’t worry if some places your cardboard is two layers thick. Just make sure noth-ing green is showing. Wet the cardboard down thoroughly. Cover the wet cardboard with an inch or so of soil if you have some. Then cover that with a layer of straw about 4 to 6 inches thick. Water it well and go sit on the porch with a cold lemonade.

We have made a number of these gardens…Lawns to Lettuce is the Snohomish Conservation District’s program (first done at our farm on Camano!)…and it is bullet proof.

If you want a garden now, dig down through the straw and dirt and cut a hole for your plant. If you wait until next spring, you’ll have love-ly soil ready to receive your tender transplants. And even if you wait until all your toilet paper is gone, you’ll still never have had to turn a spade to grow cabbage where once was sod.

METEOR SHOWERS If you have ever been out at night and seen the blazing glory of a falling star, you know the excitement of meteor showers. As com-ets get closer to the Sun they heat and debris trails off (hence the comet’s“tail”) and fragments are left behind. The Earth moves into this field and the result is a night of falling stars. Fortunately for us most of these fragments are the size of dust and safely burn up before reaching the ground. Their blaze of glory comes from their speed- 7 to 45 miles a second resulting in tremendous friction with the at-mosphere. The trail you see is a combination of the burning matter and the glowing ionized air. Those that reach the ground are called meteorites. Meteor showers are concentrations typically from the tail of a particular comet. The “Perseids”, for example, are from the comet Swift-Tuttle. The pattern is quite predictable although the intensity is hard to pinpoint. A forecasts of a certain number per hour can sometimes fall short or greatly exceed expectations. We are always experiencing small meteor showers and a surprisingnumber make it to Earth. Try leaving a cooking sheet under an open sky for a week and run a magnet over the contents. Those small dust particles on the magnet are probably meteorites- their iron and nickel content make them stick. If you can take a look through a low power microscope you will get an impressive view of visitors who recently dropped in from space.
