POTENTATE’S MESSAGEGreetings and Salutations,

This summer has been full of surprises and many activities weather wise. However, it did not stop the Shriners from attending the parades.

The special meeting removed all the doubts from suspicious minds about our beautiful Shrine Center and now we have the clear view of looking nowhere but ahead.

As we travel around doing fraternal visitations to other Temples, we realize that we are very lucky and blessed to have this land and the building that could offer many memorable events. In the mean time, we still have to achieve many goals and win many obstacles to get to that level. We can only achieve that by appreciating each others talents and knowledge.

It is no secret that we are on a tight budget and as a result, our nances got on track to leave some funds for the next Divan to have a better year. That being said, we must continue to work toward our goals, so we don`t fall into the same trap.

It appears that we will have a good slate of Candidates for 2018 Divan and I am looking forward to seeing the old tradition of competing for Divan positions.

Last but not the least, the catering situation is almost recti ed. Looking forward to a new beginnings for the remaining of this year and to end of next year.

Effective people are not problem minded; they are opportunity minded. They feed opportunities and starve problems.

...Dr. Stephen Covey

Fraternally yours,Ferit (Fred) Susun

RECORDER’S RAMBLINGSThe 143rd Imperial session was recently concluded and I am awaiting the Potentate’s report on all the legislation changes that occurred, which should be presented to the membership as per General Order #2 of Shrine International at the next stated meeting. There were some 45 amendments on the call of the meeting. Whilst reading the call one amendment that caught my attention was amendment #2 which stated “Revenues means all fees, taxes, levies or other amounts payable to Shriners International, is stated in United States dollars and shall be paid in United States dollars”

This would have an impact on the nancial wellbeing of all International Temples: I immediately informed our representatives and spoke with other Canadian Temples however, we are but a small sh in a large, large lake and this legislation passed unanimously, indeed, I was in touch with the Webfez team the following day to have some input on how this could be implemented. Your 2018 annual invoice, which will be distributed by Shrine International commencing August 15, 2017, will show an exchange rate adjustment, to compensate for this amendment.

Please, do not forget your dues, to those who have paid we thank you: however, as of this writing we have 23 Nobles who have not paid their dues for 2016 and 74 who not yet paid their 2017 dues. The Temple must pay the per capita and hospital dues for Nobles on the roles as of January 1 each year. Take a look in your wallet and check your Shrine card and if it is not current please call the of ce to bring yourself up to date.

Remember we must have a Temple before we can begin to support our philanthropy - The Shriners Hospitals for Children and the Shriners Hospital Patient Transportation Fund.

Our Shrine building is both an asset and an investment and all our Nobles are acutely aware that we require a professional building manager and we have required this for a number of years, however those who lead this organization have failed to take any direction towards accomplishing this urgent need. Even the highest of them, has wavered and failed to take a decision on anything regarding the building during this year. Managing a Masonic building is a business and we must as I have stated before, look at our Shrine building as a business and treat it as such, then we will see and reap the bene ts it beholds. We must ask ourselves whether our building is not only t for the purpose today, but will it continue to be so for the next 10-20 years.

Success is not nal, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts. Sir. Winston Churchill.

Ask not what the Shrine can do for you……..But what you can do for your Shrine………

Recorder

But what you can do for your Shrine………

ARAB PATROL

The Al Shamal Shriners’; Arab Patrol Unit, assembled again at Noble

Jim’s Of ce and Shop in Lamont, Alberta for the Town of Lamont’s

annual parade.

For more than 15 years the Patrol Unit and their wives have met at Jim’s

place where we have eaten, socialized and prepared for our lineup for

the parades.

Hosting the Patrol Unit and with their wives; today, was Noble Jim and

Evelyn Lopetinsky; and Isador and Gloria Patrie; with a superb breakfast

buffet upon our arrival, displayed and ready for us.

Besides being a perfect host, Jim on this day came to the rescue of

the Patrol by providing us with a complimentary battery for our trailer’s

canopy hydraulic motor lift system. Again, many thanks Jim.

Prior to assembling for the parade this year, all attendees helped to show

their appreciation to Jim with the presentation from Al Shamal Shriners;

a “Certi cate of Recognition” for Jim’s outstanding contributions to Al

Shamal Shriners and the Arab Patrol in particular.

At the conclusion of the parade, the Patrol Unit and their wives were

treated to a complimentary pancake breakfast, that is held annually in

the town’s arena after each parade.

A good time was had by all and we look forward to our attendance at

next year’s Lamont parade and prior to the parade, the great hospitality

at Jim’s place. Special Thank You to Jim Lopetinsky and Jim’s Tuneup

and Diesel.

BATTLE RIVER SHRINE CLUB

On June 16, 39 Nobles and Ladies from the Battle River Shrine Club and Al Shamal Shriners gathered in Forestburg for the annual BRSC Steak and Lobster Fest.

Once again the Divan were the bartenders and as usual were fairly liberal with the refreshments, not that anyone complained. Noble Mingo, our east coast connection, arranged for the lobsters to be own in and handled the cooking of them, with his usual expertise. Noble Giebelhaus led a crew of BBQers preparing the steaks and although they have not had the practise that our good friend and colleague the late Ill. Sir Frado had, they will probably measure up in a few years time. Karen’s Catering of Forestburg provided the rest of the picnic meal and as always it was outstanding but once again it was her pies that were the biggest hit.

This annual event is always a wonderful time and the BRSC appreciates Lady Eva Fossen for being so willing to provide her farmyard for the gathering and somehow she arranges for any bad weather to usually pass us by.

This BBQ event is the precursor to our parade season, which includes a tailgate party after every parade we attend.

In Memoriam

Here are our departed Nobles who have made the Great Pilgrimage across searing desert sands to the cool Oasis of Eternal Life. These gentle men were our Friends and Brethren and the void created by their leaving causes an ache in our hearts that will not soon go away.

SHRINERS HOSPITAL FOR CHILDREN MEXICO CITY

At the end of May of this year, Bev and myself had the opportunity to visit the Shriners Hospital for Children in Mexico City. This hospital has been offering specialty pediatric orthopedic care to children in Mexico at no cost, for over 70 years. Recently they have added 4 Xray suites with ouroscopy equipment, dental services (orthopantograph), MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), PACS (picture archiving communication system), and NUANCE (medical dictation system).

The patient load is ever increasing at the busiest Shrine hospital with 2014 seeing 5,230 surgeries, 2015 seeing 5430 surgeries and 2016 seeing 5,583 surgeries.

One big advance is the emergence of Telehealth for patients in outlying areas such as Chihuahua, Ciudad Juarez, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. This eliminates the many trips that were required to Mexico City. Now the the Doctors can consult from a distance, saving travel time and money.

In May of 2016 a Motion Analysis Lab which sees 5-6 patients weekly with a 2 hour average per patient, was implemented. We had the opportunity to observe one of the patients in this lab and were amazed by the determination of this young boy to do all that the doctor asked.

I have visited other Shrine hospitals, but it was a different experience to visit this hospital, as we were given a great tour of the facility and we were allowed to meet some of the patients in their rooms and observe the treatments provided to the children.

We had planned this trip well in advance, so Bev and friends made 126 stuffed toys with embroidered themes of Pokémon, frogs, animals and the like to hand out. The children were overwhelmed and were grateful for these and other gifts from Shriners from other parts of Canada and United States. Watching their faces while receiving these gifts, gave pride to all of us as Shriners for the work that is done at our Hospitals.

This was a very memorable trip, and I would recommend anyone that has a chance to visit any of our Shrine Hospitals, Do it — you will see rst-hand how Shriners take care of the kids to make them healthier and happier.

CLOWN REPORT

The clowns have been busy attending parades all over the mid part of Alberta — Drayton Valley, Alberta Beach, Camrose, Redwater, Fort Saskatchewan, Sherwood Park and more. Parades are not the only events that we attend. We are a presence at the Junior Diabetes Association’s events and other Children’s groups, as well as the Railroad Teamsters picnic. Often monetary donations are given, allowing the Clowns to turn it over to our preferred charities — the “Sneaker Fund” at the Montreal Shrine Children’s Hospital or the Patient Transportation fund at Al Shamal.

July 12, 2017, the Clowns had their annual BBQ at the home of Tess and Dan O’Connor. Our hosts opened up their home and BBQ to a modest participation of Clowns, and it was

great to see some of the non active clowns joining us for fellowship and maybe a bit of gossip. Steaks were on the menu as well as salads and desserts. We all had a great afternoon in the O’Connor back yard and garage.

Three clowns and their ladies attended summer PNSA/PNSCA in Seattle, Washington this year. Due to the fact that Dan O’Connor and Chris Ellard are on the PNSCA executive, the only participating clown from Al Shamal was Rick Shumilak. Rick came in rst in: the whiteface, one man skit, single balloon and multi balloon categories and third in paradabilty. Rick (Boots) and Al Amira Daughter of the Nile clown, Deb Ellard (Boo Boo) preformed a 2 man skit “ the Great Tswazini” which was a lot of fun and a “big & little“ hit with the crowd. There were 3 clowns from Sheridan, Wyoming and they were the proud recipients of the Jumbo award. Maybe we can get it back next year. The dates for next year are August 15th - 18th in Casper, Wyoming hosted by Korein Shriners. Come and join the fun!

As the summer fades, we look forward to the Christmas Season parties and moveouts, where we entertain and delight the kids as Clowns always enjoy doing.

2017 ENDOWMENT REPORTIt is my pleasure to bring you an update on our endowments:

Al Shamal completed their commitment to the Pediatric Scoliosis Research Chair in 2012. The fund that was commenced by Al Shamal now stands at 3.5 million dollars as of March 31, 2017 and provides an annual spending allocation of $128,000.00 for research.

Dr. Fred Berry is the Shriners Hospital for Children Endowed chair in Scoliosis research and an associate professor in the department of surgery in the faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Dr. Berry’s goal is to understand the process necessary for normal formation of the vertebral column, these insights will allow his research team to determine how vertebral malformations contribute to Scoliosis and potential strategies to correct or prevent these malformations.

The other chair that is sponsored by Al Shamal is “The Shriners Children’s Research Fund which now stands at 1.44 million dollars as of March 31, 2017 and provides $41,000 annually for further research.

Nobles you can see that your hard work is quietly assisting others less fortunate than ourselves by funding much needed research which hopefully will offer some relief to the children of the future not only of this province but all around the world.

PULL-TAB FAMILY PORTRAIT (Do you have any tabs that look like these?)

One might well ask

what would compel

someone as old as

me to run around the

countryside collecting

scraps of aluminum.

Why would a sane person

gather in thousands of beverage

can pull-tabs? WHY? And why, by all that is

Holy, would you do this, relentlessly, for years? Believe it or not, there is

a reasonable explanation.

It's for the same reason you take the time, and exert the effort, to set

aside those same tiny pieces of metal for me — so that our Shrine can

continue to operate; so we can get those special children the unique

care they so rightfully deserve. That is our cause. That is our mission.

And we accomplish it — in this instance — one tiny loving step at a

time.

Please continue to set those pull-tabs aside for me to pick up. It helps

us do what we are dedicated to doing — helping those who cannot

help themselves.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has launched a new health and wellness program to highlight the importance of regular scoliosis screening and to position us as a leader in scoliosis care. The program encourages parents to make a spine check part of their annual back to school routine and to contact Shriners Hospitals for Children if their child needs our care.

Under the leadership of Amer Samdani, M.D., chief of surgery for Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia, a team of doctors, developers and parents joined forces to create a new app called SpineScreen to check for possible signs of scoliosis. This informative and easy to use app allows parents to perform a preliminary spine check on their child in the comfort of their own home. We encourage you to download SpineScreen for free on the App Store or Google Play and try it today.

Tomorrow, August 15, 2017, Dr. Samdani will of cially kick off the campaign with a nationwide satellite media tour. Dr. Samdani will appear on television and radio shows across the country to educate the public about scoliosis, the importance of annual screenings and how SpineScreen can help detect possible signs of scoliosis.

Immediately following the satellite media tour, Dr. Samdani will also participate in a Facebook Live event at 1:30 p.m. EDT at facebook.com/ShrinersHospitalsforChildren/. The event will feature Dr. Samdani providing tips for early detection and other information about scoliosis. The event will conclude with a Q&A. We hope you join us for the event.

Please help us increase awareness about scoliosis by sharing the SpineScreen app and encouraging family and friends to tune in tomorrow for the Facebook Live event. For more information about this new program, please visit shrinershospitalsforchildren.org/scoliosis.

Gary J. BergenskeImperial Potentate

CASH CALENDARThe 2018 Cash Calendars are at the Shrine Centre NOW. This is a large fund raiser for the Shrine and we need the help of all Shriners to make it a success. Everyone needs a calendar in their home and if each member bought one and sold one or two to family, friends and neighbors we could sell out with little or no effort.

Wondering who to sell them to:

• Your Lodge Members• Your Shrine Friends• Your Family• Your Work Associates• Your Friends and Neighbours• Your Dentist, Doctor etc• Those people who you do everyday business with

Or you could give them as Christmas gifts to all or any of the above.

We need YOU to make this a very successful fund raiser.

Call us at 780-484-0928 to order yours today!

We assisted the Legion of Honour in handing out “Bully Books” to the children along the parade routes. We had a great time and look forward to marching in a number of parades next year.

On June 24th, Alberta Masonic Day in Fort Edmonton Park, we assisted with the registration table and directed the participants to the staging area. We proudly marched behind our Temple Banner. Queen Robyn presented greetings on behalf of Al Amira Temple. The Membership Committee had a display table to pass on information to any ladies interested in our Order.

The Daughters of the Nile assisted the Al Shamal Shriners at their Family Day Picnic and Fun Day on July 2nd, with food and beverage service.

On Sunday, July 9th, about 20 ladies and their partners participated in the fun event - “Puttin’ Around With Nile”. It was a very hot afternoon on the “golf course” and every-one enjoyed the friendship and laughter!

We are now busy preparing for Supreme Queen Karen Keuther’s Of cial Visit and Ceremonial on August 21st. The Ceremonial will be held at 2:00 pm, followed by unit performances, and the Banquet at 6:00 pm.

Many of us will be travelling with Supreme Queen Karen to Sakkara Temple (Calgary), Miriam Temple (Victoria), and Zarah Temple (Vancouver) for her Of cial Visits.

This year, at the PNSA, one of the members of Al Amira Temple, Deb Ellard, competed in the Powder Puff clown competition. She took rst place, and was privileged to also perform a two-person skit with Rick “Boots” Shumilak. For the rst time ever, she was able to walk alongside the Shrine clowns in the parade as the Imperial Potentate’s guest.

Friends are the most important ingredient in the recipe of life.

GREETERS

specialized care institutions may also need transition time back in the nursery prior to heading home.

“Our Nobles and our Shrine Clubs are very focused on infant and child health and we are always striving to ensure the best health outcomes possible. Shriners work locally, nationally, and internationally to raise funds and support children and families through health crisis” said Clarence Buchanan, President Al Shamal Shriners. “We are delighted to provide a $10,000 donation to the Northern Lights Health Foundation to assist the hospital with more specialized services in the Maternal/Child ward.”

ABOUT THE AL SHAMAL SHRINERS FORT MCMURRAY CLUBThe Club was established in 1976 and has always had a community presence. Fund raising efforts have continued over all 20 years. In the early years many hours were spent in the local malls selling Christmas cakes, pudding and shortbread. Currently, fund raising includes the annual circus, the Ronald MacDonald/Shrine Golf Tournament and the Athabasca River Break-up raf e with funds supporting the Shriners Hospital for Children.

The Shriners Hospitals for Children are located throughout North America and specialize in Orthopedics, Burn Care, Spinal Cord Injury, and Cleft Lip and Palate, regardless of a family’s ability to pay.

FORT McMURRAY SHRINE CLUB

The Fort McMurray Shrine Club took an active part in the Canada Day 150 parade in Fort McMurray. The club recently purchased 5 Prowlers which took the place of our mini-bikes this year and were a big hit with the crowd. Our oat was decorated with the 150 year theme and showcased a giant fez which was organized by the members of the local Daughters of the Nile, Aurora Nile Club No. 3. This was the biggest parade in Fort McMurray history with 73 oats and the Shriners proudly showed their presence and support of this community we call home.

AL SHAMAL SHRINERS SUPPORT MATERNAL CHILD HEALTHPROJECT IN FORT MCMURRAYThe Northern Lights Health Foundation is pleased to announce that the Al Shamal Shriners of Fort McMurray are donating $10,000 to advance infant care in our region.

The Northern Lights Regional Health Care facility provides maternity and infant care, and supports over 1000 births a year. Over the past few years, the Maternal/child ward of the hospital has seen a number of renewal projects to offer increased health services for both pre-term and post-delivery patients and the donation from the Al Shamal Shriners will augment the next series of infrastructure and service changes.

“Over the past few years we have added a Non Stress Test ward, have created a new waiting room for maternity visitors and family members, have added TeleHealth to connect our health centre to others in Alberta for consultations and training, and have upgraded the maternity rooms,” said Juanita Pilgrim, Manager of Maternity and Pediatrics. “Our next step is to create a Special Care Nursery to provide “Level 1” newborn care. This means that we can provide care for babies who are born as early as 35 weeks gestation, and who require extra supports including respiratory (breathing) support, intravenous (IV) therapy, and other types of specialized newborn care.”

The new nursery will be centrally located in the maternity ward and will also be used to stabilize infants who must be transferred to other hospitals for specialized care. Infants who are returning from those

DAUGHTERS OF THE NILE - AMBASSADORS UNIT – HIGH TEAOn Sunday, June 25, 2017, the Ambassadors Unit, Al Amira Temple #157, Daughters of the Nile held their annual High Tea. Eighty-nine lucky Ladies and Gentlemen attended the event in Biff’s Lounge from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

For the rst time, the Ambassadors members wore their newly created black fascinators as you can see in the picture. This allowed us to be visual and easily called upon.

The Ambassadors put on a lovely event starting with tables decorated with colourful napkins, lovely owers, decorated sugar cubes and delightful tea pot cookies attached to the tea cups.

Attendees picked out their favorite tea from the tea table and took their seats.

They were then served cream cheese strawberries, crab cucumber rounds, smoked salmon cream cheese rice crackers and crab phyllo tarts.

The sandwiches followed with an enticing assortment of egg salad ngers, ham and cheese owers, chicken owers, and salmon, egg, and cherry cream cheese rolled sandwiches.

Next was the scrumptious strawberry preserves and whipped cream to go with the lemon yogurt scones. These were accompanied by the traditional welsh cakes.

Finally, the desserts were served. An assortment of goodies including lemon tarts, shortbread, rum balls, chocolate dipped grapes, earl grey tea pot cookies and peanut butter squares.

It was a great afternoon and enjoyed by all. Our next tea will be held on Sunday, June 10, 2018. Mark your calendars.

EDMONTON CARING CLOWNS

DONATE TO AL SHAMAL SHRINERSThe Caring Clowns was formed in 1998 by two long time Shrine Clowns

Bud Salloum & George McEwen because there was a need for Clowns

too cheer up patients in hospitals & Senior residents..

Over the years we have trained a good number of people to be a great

in uence on various communities and events related to health, such as

Kids with Cancer, Make a Wish program, Senior residences and many

other fun runs that relate to disabilities. It’s with heavy heart the current

members have decided to disband due to dwindling numbers.

So the vote to donate our funds was to the Al Shamal Shriners to

further their mandate for Kids.

Thank you to the Caring Clowns. Because of you, Al Shamal Shriners

now own a grass blade to add to the Clown’s tractor. This makes the

lawn mowing much quicker and easier.

Miles of smiles submitted

2017 AL SHAMAL FAMILY PICNIC.The 2017 Al Shamal Shrine Children's Family and Penny Carnival was held on Sunday, July 2, 2017. It was a huge success with a good time being had by all. The weather held out and it ended up being a warm and sunny day. The food, refreshments, popcorn, cotton candy, chips, ice cream and a bake sale table were staged in the main auditorium. The games, rides and bouncy castle were outside. There were over two hundred (200) children, parents, guests and volunteers in attendance. A huge thank you goes out to the various units and volunteers that helped out with the cooking, food, games, rides, fun activities and clean up. Global News even came out and we had exposure on the evening news. This event would not have been possible without the participation of the units and volunteers. Rick and Bev Shumilak were extremely helpful in their assistance and guidance with planning and organization. Lets all start thinking about next year's Children's Picnic and make this a bigger event.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST SHRINE ASSOCIATION (PNSA)Our latest convention was PNSA in Seattle/Mount Lake Terrace, Washington on July 27 to 29, 2017. Ill. Sir Fred Susun, Chief Rabban Ron Ryland, Assistant Rabban Rick Shumilak and Lady Bev, along with Al Shamal Clowns — Noble Dan O’Connor with Lady Tes and Noble Chris Ellard with lady Deb attended this event. The Nile Shrine hosted the event at their beautiful Shrine Center, surrounded by a prestigious 18 hole golf course and a lake.

Although it was only a couple of weeks after the Imperial session, we did get together with our counterparts for dinner and a lot of laughs. The Nile Shrine had tours in the Ballard Locks, St. Michelle Winery and Red Hook Brewery, Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass Company. There was also a golf tournament right on their own golf course. The parade was on Friday night in downtown Mount Lake Terrace. The streets were lined with chairs a couple of days ahead, in anticipation to watch the parade, great to see such patronage from your home town in support of the Shriners.

The competitions were also on Friday, with the wheeled units, Oriental Bands and Clowns competing. Rick Shumilak was the only clown competing, as Dan “DOC” O’Connor and Chris “KWIVERS” Ellard are on PNSCA executive and cannot compete. Rick came in rst in the Whiteface, one man skit, single balloon and multi balloon categories and third in paradabilty. We need to get more participation from other units, to attend and compete, as a great time is always had.

The Clown dinner and awards was fun with Imperial Sirs Jim Cain, Jim Smith and Lady Alice, Bill Bailey and Lady Debby attending for the installation of 2017/2018 PNSCA executive.

A lot of laughs were heard, when the Al Shamal Clowns’ tradition was carried on, by presenting a bouquet of red noses to Tes O’Connor, the lady of the outgoing PNSCA president, Dan O’Connor.

See you all in Casper, Wyoming for PNSA 2018.

EDMONTON PROSPECTS BASEBALL CLUBThe Edmonton Prospects Baseball Club hosted a Shriners night at Edmonton’s RE/MAX eld, to publicize Shriners and the work done by the Shrine Hospitals for Children on Wednesday, July 26th. There were approximately 2000+ fans in attendance.

The rst pitch was thrown by our own Bob Disler (Dizzy).

SILVER WINGSThe Silver Wings are in full ight at this time with our busy schedule of parades keeping us on the go – for Canada Day 150 – we took our units to Sherwood Park for the very rst time and enjoyed a fun , long and very warm parade – being so close to the public makes it so easy to interact with the kids and families as we go by. Our Unit welcomed

Noble Jim Hutchison and Lady Stacey back to Edmonton and right into the group once again – so good to have such great people back and so keen to help again . We rented a bouncy castle for the penny carnival at the Temple and we had a couple of carts available for a quick spin around the parking lot – if we show people how much fun we have, it makes it easier to get new members – in all it was a great day with lots of laughs and sunshine – everyone had a good time ….. TLC REPORTThe summer is quickly passing by, and the TLC has been busy participating in parades.

It is always fun riding and seeing the smiles we put on the spectators faces, and heartwarming when the public claps to show their appreciation as the Shriners go by. Even the remen from different stations come over to check us out!

The TLC was happy to provide a bean bag toss at the Penny Carnival and Family Picnic in July while Noble Maurice Riopel and Lady Gustine put on many miles giving rides on the hospital train to “kids” both young and old!

The TLC is looking to welcome some new members. If you like to have fun and would like to drive one of our “ retrucks”, please contact Chief Wayne Barrett or any of our TLC members.
