Life is full of strange coincidences! My first meeting with Louise Austin was one such occasion. I was first introduced to her last year, whilst dj at a local gig which she was helping to promote; now the Soul Music scene could be described as a bit specialist but probably not as much as my other hobby Drag Racing (that’s not men in frocks running against each other ed! but the car variety), which is sadly on the back burner at the moment, anyway suffice to say on a national basis there is only a handful of people competing in this sport. So imagine my surprise when during conversation it turned out that Louise’s brother Vince was a fellow racer friend of mine from years back. How a conversation about Drag Racing came about at a Soul do I can’t remember? But it did lead to Louise telling me more about her life long interest in Soul music and that this was her first foray into promoting a Soul Night.

Now it has to be said that she is no stranger to advertising and promotion in general, that has been her career for many years and apparently she is not bad at it at all. However it was not the business side of things that drove her to wanting promote Soul Nights but a culmination of her love for the music and having a little more time since the kids got older.

Although she enjoyed the promotion she was involved in it wasn’t quite hitting the spot for her musically. Louise’s Soul experience began back in the 70s in her then native county of Hertfordshire she was regularly attending Jazz Funk Soul Nights and Weekenders in and around the area including trips into nearby London to visit the hottest clubs. The Jazz Funk scene was massive in the south of the

country in the 70s and into the 80s attracting many hundreds of clubbers! You could say it was the South’s Northern Soul scene if you forgive the contradiction in terms.

Louise’s family later moved up North to Northampton but luckily Clubs like The Salon and Cinderella’s in the town were providing the music she loved. It was the music and the memories of these times that inspired her to take a brave step into solely promoting her own night. Earlier this year she started to look for a place to accommodate and settled on the fantastic venue of The Double Tree by Hilton Hotel at the MK Dons Football Ground Milton Keynes which provided two rooms.

Next on the list was tracking down some DJs to fit the bill, no short cuts were taken here. Louise assembled an impressive line up of some famous names from the scene including, Louie Martin of Radio London & Caister Weekender fame, Rob James & Andrew Ackerman of Seclow Sounds Radio. Mike Shade, Paddy Grady, Paul Gray, myself and fellow DJ Steve Scotney completed the line up. A date was set for June 13th and Louise was ready to promote her first night under the name of Groove On! Soul Extravaganza! The first night was a real success with latest Soul Diva! Bashiyra making a surprise live appearance treating everyone to a few of her new numbers and none other than Clem Curtis of the Foundations popping along to see what it was all about!

It all sounds very easy but Louise put a tremendous amount of per-sonal effort in to make it happen, some things she found a bit daunt-ing not least approaching some of the DJs that were her heroes.

SOUL SISTER, DOING IT FOR HERSELF!

Page 9: Events on Sept 14

However as she pointed out these guys turned out to be perfect gentleman and really got on board with the idea, even inviting her along to appear on their radio shows. Groove On 2 is now just around the corner on September 5th featuring the return of Bashiyra ‘The Voice’ and The Groove Association’s Georgie B performing live, with a DJ line up that includes James Anthony, Rob James, Steve Scotney and myself playing Jazz Funk, Boogie & Weekender Anthems in Room 1 and Classic Disco 70s Soul & Motown in room 2. Tickets are already selling quicker than the first gig so if you are interested get in touch with Groove On www.grooveonpromotions.co.uk or www.facebook.com/GrooveOnUK You can book tickets starting at £10 each for early birds by calling 0333 200 7213 you can even stay overnight at the hotel for around £40 .

Louise has been really pleased with response to her nights so far and acknowledges a good part of that is due to the support she has received from people involved in the scene for many years and never dreamt that it would create the stir it has, she commented “Sometimes I have to pinch myself when I find little ole me talking with some of the people I have this year”. Groove On has another event confirmed in Milton Keynes in November which will include famous Soul singers Phil Phearon of Galaxy and Greg Edwards. I also hear a rumour that Lee Johns of Imagination is showing an interest! We look forward to hearing more about that nearer the time Louise! Visit the website or hook up on Facebook on the addresses above to stay updated with Groove On.

Two more Nights in Northants! Just enough space left (please Ed) to mention a couple of events happening that have just come in. Both are occurring on the 26th September. Firstly a Charity Northern Soul Night at the Gladstone Club Finedon NN9 5LG. Local Soul Man Mick Maye is running this one off event, all in a worthy cause for Motor Neurone Disease it is £5 o.t.d with all profits going to the charity it kicks off at 8.00pm and finishes at 12.30am. There will also be charity collection boxes so bring plenty of loose change as well. Official charity representatives will be there on the night to receive your generous donations. Mick has been on the scene since the 70s and is a really nice guy, so if Northern Soul is your thing, get along and support him. Djs will be Mick him self, Karl Boddington, Colin Brindle & Clive Bailey. It is strictly Northern Soul across the Board. Call Mick on 07961 965 743 for all info.

Secondly life long Motown an Soul fan Mark Bedford has been in touch to tell us about a brand new Motown Night he is starting at the Silver Band Club, Queen Street, Earls Barton NN6 0LN, on the 26th September. Music will be classic Motown & Soul floor fillers.

Mick along with his mates was a regular attendee of the Railway Club nights in Wellingborough and wanted to do something in the same vain. So far there has been keen interest with many people booking their place in advance. So it’s a good idea to call him on 07974 682 628 to reserve your place for £5. As the venue has a limit on numbers.

Music will be supplied on the night by the Original Jem Bs Disco. Good luck with this Mick!

Well that’s all for this month folks, as always contact me at [email protected] if you have anything Soulful to report! See you somewhere Soulful Soon

I’m currently working up at the Edinburgh Festival. I thought I’d keep a diary of the day-to-day events. Here’s week one, enjoy.

Sunday 27th July 2014: If today has taught me anything, it’s that – even though I may be able to take on the roads of a foreign country – I still can’t change a track on my car’s stereo without nearly causing a fatal collision. Still, I got here. I’m in Edinburgh. Well, just outside Edinburgh; in Kirkcaldy. I’m staying with my Step-Dad’s Aunty Ella and Uncle Dave; they’ve been Scottish all their lives. On my way down, my phone rang and I was asked if I could start work a day early. I’m working for So Comedy, which is/was (not sure) owned by Graham Norton – we’ve got a bunch of shows on throughout the duration. Ant and James (our producer and production coordinator) needed a hand dropping bits of set off at various

venues, which was fine by me. My plan is to get the bus in each day, but I decided to just drive in today to make things easier. Driving through this city is mental. There are a lot of narrow streets and it’s a cobbled nightmare. After about 30 minutes of circulating the area, I eventually found a parking space. A passing Scottish lady told me “There be no traffic wardens till mornin’, so you’ll be reet there son”. I took her word as gospel. Edinburgh at the minute is awash with hoards of people, drastically putting up posters, building sets and – in some cases – building venues. One thing I realised with all these posters going up is that there is a hell of a lot of shows that I want to see – I’m going to be going back to Blackpool bankrupt at the end of the month. Still, tonight gave me chance to check out some of the venues we’re working at, all of which are chock-a-block with shows, as is everywhere in the city.

Monday 28th July 2014 First full day today. Met the other runners, who are a nice bunch, and set to work on getting this party started. My first job of the day was to buy a pint of milk. A fairly simple task, or so you’d think. Tesco was full of punk rockers, so I ended up using the self-service machine. I don’t think I’ve ever used one of those machines without needing assistance. This time, some hooligan had stuffed a receipt in the coin slot, so an employee had to perform open-heart surgery on the machine; all for the sake of a one-pound coin. I said to the old bloke next me, who was also having an issue with his machine, “Wouldn’t it be easier for them to just hire humans instead of these robots?” He ignored me. I don’t think he liked my accent. The rest of the day consisted of the carrying of many

boxes and the stapling of reviews to many flyers. The way I saw it, every review I stapled to a leaflet was a possible game changer for that act’s career. If any of them ever become household names, I’ll be knocking on their doors, demanding staple royalties.

Tuesday 29th July 2014 Not a lot went on today. It was my day off, so I just stayed in, in a hermit state. I looked over all the shows on at the Fringe during the next few weeks and compiled a list of all the ones I’d like to see. The list was too long, so I had to do an X Factor style set-up of having rounds in order to whittle them down to finalists; choosing the ones with the best sob stories. Uncle Dave and Aunty Ella also went out shopping and had an unintentional car crash. They’re fine and everything (minus a dinted car). Apparently a foreign driver swung lanes, smashing into them on a roundabout. I bet they were French. (See August Events On)

Wednesday 30th July 2014 Watched a traffic warden ticket a car this morning. He then called another warden and bragged that he’d “nailed an Audi”. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a charity set up to help traffic wardens who have had a kicking. The shows started today, which meant we all had to start shaking a leg. My full shift today consisted of standing on the street and flyering, trying to get people to come to our shows. The brilliant thing about approaching random members of the public is that you never know what you’re going to get – a bit like a bag of revels. One man’s poor excuse not to come to one of our shows was that he was not “currently in Scotland”; I had to assure him he was. Another man showed me a diagram of the human body and asked where a bone I’d never heard of was – I don’t think he really cared about the leaflet I was handing him, I think he just wanted to show off. Went to see one of our shows after my shift, which was a complete step out of my comfort zone.

Those that know me will know that I’m not really in the target demographic for watching members of the audience “bob for cocks” (like Apple bobbing, but with plastic…you know). Still, it was a pretty funny show (Shirley and Shirley) – I was even reminded that I “look about 12″. A phrase that even my Mum uses.

Thursday 31st July 2014 I know it’s intrusive to read people’s texts, but I watched a woman on the bus this morning send “It looked more like a walrus to me X”. All I can deduce from that is that she clearly has a much more interesting life than me. I’ve never even seen a walrus at the zoo. I went to watch a play with Paul Merton before work. What I mean by that is that he was in the play, he wasn’t my plus one or anything intriguing like that. I was delayed slightly, as I was stuck behind Nina Conti pushing a pram -surprisingly; it wasn’t the monkey in the pram.

I returned to the streets of the city to continue my roll as ‘saviour of show attendance’, one leaflet at a time. I’m starting to get the hang of this whole leafleting thing. You just have to seem really excited, energetic and friendly – either that or you make the public feel sorry for you. I tend to go for the latter, as my face is more suited to it. I didn’t have that bad an upbringing to be fair, but I did attend a school where students poo down the staircases, “for a laugh”. One of the perks of my job is that I get passes for all the venues. This means that, if a show isn’t sold out, I can join the back of the queue and get in for free; like the freeloading, Northern

scrounger I am. Tonight, I blagged my way in to see Mark Watson. He said things that were very, very funny. I laughed a lot. I’m now waiting for the microwave, so I can enjoy my Sainsbury’s chicken curry.

Friday 1st August 2014 I went to see Phill Jupitus before my shift, in what was a super tiny venue. It was so small that the staff working there were borrowers. It was a great gig, although I had a soar behind afterwards – as the seats were rather small and the man I was sat next to was of a large proportion, breathing heavily, and was finishing off a half eaten McDonalds. I considered asking him to pay for the extra 50% of seating he had stolen. In my mind, that’s a form of piracy. Things are starting to get busier now we’re into August – more people are taking leaflets from me, as well as asking me for directions to places I’ve never heard of. Still, I’m starting to find my way around Edinburgh. I’ve started to talk to a lot of the other flyerers too; a lot of them also have interesting stories about their experiences, most of them tragic. Went to see both Paul McCaffrey and Justin Moorhouse after my shift – both exceptionally funny comics. My engine warning light came on in my car during the drive home from the bus station. I wept a little.

Saturday 2ndAugust 2014 Today I finally got to experience a true Scottish expectation – it absolutely bucketed it down with rain. At one point, I seriously

considered acquiring the blueprints for an arc. That, combined with the fact my engine light was still illuminated in my car this morning, meant I was pretty grouchy. However, seeing somebody who was flyering for ‘Off The Kerb’, trip over a kerb, did cheer me up. You don’t even need Alanis Morissette to tell you just how ironic that was. A bunch of our shows are starting to sell out now, which is a really great feeling. Nobody ever buys the stuff I sell on eBay, never mind from face to face contact. The idea that words from my mouth have influenced the parting of money is a bizarre one. The only time I’ve ever sold anything is when I flogged Chris Correa a pirate copy of Shrek 3 for £3. That didn’t end well, as I ended up being sent to the head-teacher’s office, due to allegations that I was selling pornography. I went to see Frank Skinner this evening, a true comedy legend. He did not disappoint, it was a true master class in stand-up. It made me realise that comedy isn’t just about making people laugh, it’s also a long journey of earning respect from your audience; which takes years of hard work and graft. The atmosphere was electrifying; everybody in the audience clearly loved Frank and was, in a way, proud of him and what he’d achieved over the years. I think, even if he had have been rubbish, people who would still have clapped and cheered – Frank has already earned his applause. Jack won the inaugural flyerer of the year 2014 at the fringe.
