Communication At Palmwoods State School we know there are real benefits in open communication between home and school and we endeavour to keep this as positive as possible. This starts with our teachers calling or talking to each of their students’ parents in the first three weeks of the year. We then have our Parent Information Sessions in Week 3, followed by interviews at the end of Term 1. It would be great if all our parents would try to touch base with their child’s teacher a couple of times a term. Usually a formal meeting is not necessary, but can be arranged if you wish. Growth Mindset There’s an old saying “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.” This saying demonstrates a Growth Mindset at work. A growth mindset is a way of thinking that helps an individual to understand that if they put in work and effort, they will grow and develop in their skills and understanding. The opposite of a growth mindset is fixed mindset, with thinking that believes ability is permanent and set, and that you either can or cannot do something and can’t control the outcomes. A fixed mindset is often shown when people say things like “I’m no good at Maths” or “this is too hard”. Teachers here at Palmwoods State School work to develop a Growth Mindset in our students. Our student friendly criteria sheets aka “Tuft” sheets, show a growth mindset, in that the “Tufts” represent hair growing and that with effort around learning goals, students can grow in their achievement. We encourage children to discuss misconceptions or misunderstandings around learning, to work out where they were mixed up and what to do next. We provide feedback to students on their work with clear and explicit steps on what to do next. We set learning goals with the children, to help students know what they need to work on next and provide opportunities for them to practise and achieve those goals. We also explicitly discuss effort with students, so they understand that if they respond to feedback and work hard on their tasks that they can achieve. This diagram demonstrates two thinking responses. The comments in the coloured bubbles are the growth mindset statements, the other comments show fixed mindset statements. As it says below the banner, “Change your words; change your mindset!”

How can I help at home?

Be aware of comments made by yourself and your children. Is it supporting a fixed or growth mindset? Choose comments that promote a growth mindset and praise effort to develop a love of learning.

Praise effort and persistence on tasks so children understand what and why they’ve done well eg don’t say “Good Boy” or “Good Girl” (with no further information provided) but rather “Good job, you worked really hard to clean your room and now you can find where everything is!”

If you’d like some more information go to http://www.mindsetworks.com/webnav/parenttips.aspx where you’ll find videos discussing ways to foster a growth mindset at home. If you’d like more information please don’t hesitate to contact me at school.

Happy Growth mindset work! Kellie Martin Head of Curriculum

RESOURCE CENTRE NEWS Bookweek On Tuesday Palmwoods State School celebrated ‘Book Week’ by asking the children to dress up as their favourite book character for the day. The children showed up in overwhelming numbers with nearly the whole school dressing up as their favourite book characters. Mr Petts had a very hard time trying to pick winners from each Year level.

We also encouraged students to make a small donation on the day which went to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We collected over $300, so not only did we experience how books light up the world, we were are also lighting up the life of a child battling a life-threatening medical condition. Make-A-Wish wishes build resilience, which is vital and an essential complement to medical treatment. Well done Palmwoods. See our Facebook page for more fabulous photos.

Opti-minds On Saturday 22nd August two teams of students from Years 4, 5 and 6 competed in the Opti-Minds Challenge. The Opti-Minds Challenge Process is ‘Inquiry Learning’, ‘Rich Tasking’ and ‘Inclusive Curriculum’ at its best! One group chose a Science/Engineering problem to solve and the other group chose a Literature based problem and spent a very busy six weeks working independently to resolve it. The children had to solve their problem and present their solution through a 10 minute play. They were not to get help from adults or teachers at any time of the question preparation or during the presentation. They presented a product of their ideas – their Challenge Solution – to a panel of judges and an audience on Challenge Day. Special thanks to Mrs Lisa Skehan, who volunteered and spent the entire Saturday as an official judge during the competition. Also huge thanks to Ms Claudia Garrett who prepared the children in the weeks before the competition in working as a team and gave them problem solving skills to help support the Spontaneous Question. Both teams performed brilliantly on the day and their solution to the problem will be playing for viewing on Arts Alive evening in the Library.

Small but Loud Voices As part of the ‘Voices on the Coast’ Literature Festival in 2015 our children are encouraged to partake in the ‘Small but Loud Voices’ literary competition. Five children from Palmwoods will be invited to have their short stories (400 words) or poems published. These stories and optional illustration need to be submitted to Mr Mijnarends in the Library by the 9thSeptember. Children may enter from Years Prep to 6. The overall selection for published stories or poems will be chosen regardless of Year level. Happy writing.

Sunshine Coast Oz Tag Recently Palmwoods students participated in the Sunshine Coast OZ Tag Carnival. We had Boys and Girls teams in the Year 5 & 6 division. Due to a busy term the teams were a little less prepared than previous years but still extremely excited to test their skills against the other teams on the day. All Teams played well with most students walking away from the carnival a better player than what they arrived. Many students had never played a proper game before so there was a sharp learning curve on the day. But in true Palmwoods spirit the kids did themselves, team mates, parents and coach proud. The Year 5 Boys Team went through the day undefeated and came away Champions in their division with a strong performance from all the boys. This was a great job by all the boys who really optimised what it takes to be a Champion team. Declan M had an outstanding day and was awarded player of the carnival for the Yr 6 Boys Division. The Year 6 Girls team played well with strong performances from Meg and Aine while the Yr 5 girls team played well with good performances by Keilani and Lottie.

Kris Kearney HPE Teacher District Athletics On Wednesday August 12th, a team of students from Palmwoods attended the District Athletics Trials held at the University of the Sunshine Coast. The aim of the trails is to select a team to attend the Regional Trials held later this term. Thursday, September 17 is the afternoon our school comes alive with the Arts! Arts Alive is an afternoon where parents and community are welcomed into the school to view our Visual and Performing Arts. Our theme for this year is ‘All a Flutter with the Arts’ and classes are creating some wonderful butterflies, dragonflies and other flying creatures to decorate the school. Time: 3.30pm - 6:15pm Every student in the school has been given a place in a performance item. If your child is unable to attend this school event, it is essential we know ASAP so we can make the necessary changes to class performances.

Volunteers are needed!!!! If you can spare an hour in Week 10 (14 – 17 September) to help pin art on class

displays On Thursday 17 September, we need many hands to hang up art work and

decorate the school During Arts Alive we need helping hands at the sausage sizzle and coffee lounge

(please consider donating cakes and slices for the coffee lounge). Even if you can only help for ½ an hour it would be deeply appreciated. Please contact the office or your

class teacher. We are all looking forward to showcasing the wonderful work & performances of our students’ at “Arts Alive”. Sally Kohler Music Teacher

The end of Term approaches fast and so does Arts Alive along with some Chaplaincy activities that I have planned.

Any Bites Camp This is a Scripture Union Camp run by Chaplaincy each year and was started originally by Allan Taylor. We have kept it going each year and it just gets better as time goes by. The camp is open to all students in Year 5 or 6. This camp has been heavily subsidised by The Heritage Bank in Palmwoods with a Grant we received to assist students who would struggle to go otherwise. The information is as follows: Activities: Tubing (behind a boat), visit to the Aqua Park Bli Bli, Laser Tag, plus more. Where: Apex Camp, Mudjimba When: 16th -18th October 2015 (week 2 next term) Cost: $115.00 each The info has been sent home with students in Year 5 & 6, however if you would like more information or to register your child please go to www.sucamps.org.au and click on Any Bites 2015, or Phone Jenny on 0424 467119, or John or Kelly on 5413 8598. I hope to see your children there, SPACES ARE LIMITED SO DON’T DELAY, BOOK TODAY.

Daddy Daughter Dance It’s on again, the Daddy Daughter Dance is open to all girls and their dads or any important male role model to the girls, this includes grandfathers, uncles, big brothers etc. This Year’s Theme is a HAWAIIAN LUAO so get the grass skirt and the coconut cups out and let’s hula. Dads can, and are encouraged to wear grass skirts but loud flowery shirts and board shorts will do if you’re more conservative. Girls definitely need the grass skirt. As usual, there will be food, drinks and some island style fun and of course dancing. This is being held on Friday night 30th October and will creep up fast as we have 2 weeks holiday in the middle. Cost is $10 per head this year but if you have a few girls to bring let me know and we can work something out if it’s a stretch. Bookings can be made by emailing Jenny on [email protected] This is always a great night and if you have never come ask someone who has, it’s a really valuable time for building that daddy daughter bond.

Coffee Morning Coffee mornings have moved to Tuesdays again as Monday is not a good day for many. See you on the deck of the hall Tuesday morning for “Coffee Catch Up” when you drop the kids off at school. Bring someone new, WE LOVE MEETING NEW PEOPLE.

Date Claimer Mums and Daughters We are having a girls Christmas shopping and fun night on Friday 27th November 2015. There will be lots of stalls to look at along with some fun so book the date in your diary now. Busy, busy end of year but fun fun fun.
