This festive season, Totternhoe Players celebrate their 25th birthday by bringing you the story of Snow White! In true panto style, there will be glittering costumes and side splitting comedy!

As the Evil Queen prepares the castle and her plans to marry the Prince, she is fearful of Snow White’s beauty and keeps her cleaning the floors in her ragged old clothes. However, when Prince Charming and Snow White realise that love is an open door, with a little help from Algernon, Dame Daisy and of course the D.W.A.R.F.S. they set to change her wicked plans. Are they a

NHS Blood DonationIt’s easy to become a blood donor – just go to the website at www.blood.co.uk to find out more and to read some amazing stories of how blood donation has really helped to save lives.

Blood is something we all expect to be there for us when we need it, yet only 4% of us give blood. Many people would not be alive today if it wasn’t for the generosity of blood donors. Each blood donation can help as many as 3 people. 100 donations equates to 47 litres of blood.

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.

The next donor sessions in our area are as follows :

Wednesday 21st January Leighton Buzzard Scout Association Hall Grovebury Road, LU7 4SW

Wednesday 4th February Brooklands Club Hall Garden Leys Off Brooklands Drive, LU7 3PQ

Thursday 19th February Leighton Buzzard Scout Association Hall Grovebury Road, LU7 4SW

The Baby Boomers – many of them better known as Our Parents – had a pretty rough time of it after The War. But they had something quite essential that we don’t have much of these days: good neighbours and tight communities. Nowadays we move away for better jobs or to

chase our ideal partner and live in communities that aren’t really communities at all. We don’t know our neighbours and don’t much engage in the lives of people around us. The elderly are left behind, very often stranded without their families. Too many are lonely even before they become frail. When old age really sets in, things get worse and isolation becomes severe.

Leighton-Linslade Helping Hands is a local voluntary group - a FREE service - that is trying to add a dimension of good neighbouring to isolated people in town. Very often a call comes from family members, too busy with their own young families and jobs to have the time to visit parents. Frequently we are called by the care professionals who have singled out an individual recently widowed who is having trouble coping with the thundering silence. Occasionally it might be a young mother on the edge of town, toddler in day care and husband commuting to London, who is living among complete strangers.

There are an extraordinary number of elderly people living in their own homes who lack any real form of friendly human interaction. Not surprisingly, many need help with small practical things. Perhaps the dog needs walking when the weather is too bad for a 95-year-old to go out. Perhaps the recent onset of vertigo means an elderly widow can’t reach top shelves and high places. Maybe the flare-up of a medical condition makes it impossible for an 80-year old widower to do the shopping when he needs a few essentials brought in. Or maybe a 30-year-old mum just needs a motherly chat over a cup of tea. Our visit report books are full of a wide variety of things we can do to help clients. We aren’t professionals and can’t take on any of the jobs that they do. But our team of volunteers stand ready to visit people who ring us.

All of our volunteers are DBS-checked (checked by the police for any irregularities in their past history). They volunteer to work as many or as few hours as suits them. Three volunteers, retired, are available pretty much whenever there is a need. Two volunteers, full-time workers, can only give a few hours on Saturdays. Volunteers are asked what they would like to do: help with small household tasks, collecting prescriptions or occasional groceries or... befriending. In actual fact, some volunteers, after their first visit, enjoy the companionship of the client so much that a regular weekly routine is set up.

Leighton-Linslade Helping Hands is one year old in February. And so far we have visited 45 people in the area. We have hung curtains, clipped hedges, given English lessons, given a lift to a tea dance, played dominoes... the list of what we do is as varied as our clients themselves.

We are always looking for volunteers. No matter how much or

little time you may have to spare, we would love to have you. Visits are very often a life-line for our clients, but by the same token our volunteers say that they benefit greatly from what they do.

If you might be interested in volunteering, please call us on 07581 799273 giving us your phone number and, if you have one, your email address. Someone can then be in touch to tell you more about what we do. And if you would like a visit from one of our volunteers please call us on 07581 799273 so that we can find out how we can help you.

Don’t forget

St ValentinesDay!We have been socialising Zen, our

Dogs for the Disabled pup, for nearly a year now. Zen is now 12 months old and has grown into a very handsome dog.

He will remain with us until he is about 14 months old when he will leave us and start on his training to become a fully qualifies Dog for the Disabled. All being well he will partnered up and start working around 2 years of age.

For his birthday we took him down to the New Forest and also for his first trip to the seaside to the dog friendly beach at Steamer Point, he loves water but was a little unsure of the waves as the water at Tiddenfoot Pit does not “move”!!!!!

We thank you for following Zen’s progress during his first year as a Dogs for the Disabled pup and even though it will be sad to see him move on we know he will make someone an invaluable companion and assistance dog, changing their lives for the better.

Look out around Leighton for our next recruit, I’m sure we will have another one.

For more information or if you would like to become a puppy socialiser, have a look at our website: www.dogsforthedisabled.org

Zen now 1 year old

So who has made a New Year resolution? The 5 most popular are - do more exercise, lose weight, eat more healthily, take up or restart a hobby/activity or learn a new skill.

Who first started setting New Year Resolutions?

The Babylonians The first recorded New Year resolutions were made by the Babylonians around 4000 years ago. Most commonly, it revolved around returning any borrowed farm equipment, as their New Year coincided with the start of their farming season.

The Romans Not long after, the Romans would start the New Year by counting the stock of the previous year and setting a goal to accomplish more in the coming year.

It was not just western countries that set resolutions either...

The Chinese The Chinese set a special New Year resolution - house cleaning. Most people nowadays would relate this to Spring-Cleaning. At the coming of the New Year, the Chinese would clean their house from top to bottom. What a great way to start the year, with a beautiful clean house!

The Modern World Today we still set New Year resolutions, and try to achieve them. They are almost always based around self-improvement resolutions and goals. They are a way to mark the beginning of changes in our habits and lifestyle. The most common resolutions include losing weight, quitting smoking and/or drinking, and improving your finances.

Millions of people make resolutions but unfortunately only 10% ever manage to achieve them. It is a sad fact, but many of these resolutions do not even last longer than a few weeks. So if you have made a New Year Resolution then GOOD LUCK!!

Tony, Gloria and their own team look forward to seeing you.

Two small businesses from Leighton Buzzard were invited to represent the UK’s 5.2 million small businesses in Downing Street on Friday 5th December to mark the UK’s second Small Business Saturday the following day - on December 6th - when small, independent businesses in communities across the country were put in the national spotlight.

The invitation to Downing Street came after Agile Administration and SewGood were named in the Small Business Saturday 100, a list of top small firms from across the country. The two lucky ladies Cathy Wright, owner of Agile Administration and Anne Greaves from SewGood at TK Furniture attended a Small Business Saturday Christmas fair inside Downing Street, which was also attended by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne.

A delighted Cathy Wright said “A Christmas Fair on Downing street, networking with other businesses, meeting George Osborne and Karren Brady. It was a really lovely afternoon. I have been in business for 2 and a half years now and this was by far a huge personal achievement, I felt extremely privileged to have been selected. Small businesses need support and encouragement, the aim of my business is to do just that, to help lighten the load. My clients are very diverse and my Virtual Assistant services range from general admin to more specialist services”

Anne Greaves added “It was a great honour to represent Leighton Buzzard and visiting Downing Street was the icing on the cake, very exciting to be photographed with George Osborne and the other SBS100s outside Number 11 and meeting Karren Brady was very special. SewGood’s main line is made to measure curtains, blinds, cushions etc with an alteration service and more recently giftware, ornaments and lighting, all of which compliment TK Furniture, in Hockliffe Street on the 1st floor next to the new Carpet Department. Small Business Saturday

Two Leighton Buzzard small businesses invited to Downing Street to mark Small Business Saturday

marked 5 years in business for SewGood where we celebrated in store with customers old and new with a sale which will continue until the New Year”.

Speaking about Small Business Saturday 2014, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, comments:

“Britain’s small business owners deserve our support. They are the ones who take the risks to create new opportunities and new jobs, that show off British ingenuity and innovation and I am glad that once again they will be able to be the focus of all our attention and support.”

Well done ladies and we wish you and your businesses ongoing success in the future. Amanda

Lifelong support for ourForces and their families

The charity that helps all forces and ex-forces people and their families in Bedfordshire

Who are we?SSAFA was founded in 1885, primarily to relieve distress among the families of soldiers and sailors, and subsequently increased its scope to cover all forces people and their families. Helping 50,000 people across the country every year. SSAFA is organised and operated on a county basis. In Bedfordshire, all the members of our branch are highly trained volunteers who give their time freely to provide caseworker cover for the whole of the county.

Who do we help? Our purpose is to provide lifelong support to forces and ex-forces men or women and their wives, husbands, partners, families and other dependants, whenever they need friendship, advice or assistance, at any time from the day their service starts and for the rest of their lives. Any form of service qualities, including National Service and, subject to slightly dierent qualifying lengths of service, the reserves. This lifetime eligibility for help continues for widows and widowers, after divorce, for people separated from established partnerships, and for children and other dependants.

Leighton Buzzard health and safety company HASCAT Safety have been praised by a Bedfordshire hospice for saving the charity £15,000 in potential training costs.

Bob Chandler, who runs HASCAT Safety Ltd with his wife Sue, has been providing free training to the 250 staff at Luton-based Keech Hospice Care for the past four years.

“Keech is such a fantastic organisation and we just wanted to do our bit for them,” says Bob. “Although we also get involved with fund raising, it’s great that we can also add some value by putting our business training skills to good use at Keech.”

Nicky Young, training co-ordinator at Keech Hospice Care, says: “The training that HASCAT Safety provides makes us legally compliant and keeps costs down thanks to the effective health and safety programme Bob has devised.

“We are extremely grateful for his time and expertise. This programme has saved the hospice in the region of £15,000 since its inception and in addition, HASCAT donates ink cartridges and clothing and regularly sells our lottery tickets.”

The training includes health and safety awareness, fire

awareness, plus moving and handling objects. All staff receive a full day’s training and take a refresher course every three years. Bob also trains the charity’s fire marshals and gives advice on risk assessment to senior management – the same professional services HASCAT Safety provides to businesses over a 200 mile radius from Leighton Buzzard.

HASCAT Safety Ltd delivers a wide range of consultancy and training services, with all consultants and trainers holding accredited qualifications in their respective areas of expertise, including manufacturing, warehousing, offices, mobile service engineers and workshops. For further information visit the website at www.hascat.co.ukBob Chandler, managing director of Hascat safety, is thanked by Davina Harvey, people director at Keech Hospice Care, for the free staff training which has resulted in savings of £15,000 for the charity.

At Appledown Rescue and Rehoming Kennels in Eaton Bray we have been finding new homes for abandoned and unwanted dogs since 1999. Our kennels are usually full which means that we are caring for around 50 dogs. Dogs like Misty, a 7-year-old medium sized crossbreed who could no longer be cared for by her owner. She is a very gentle and affectionate dog and would enjoy a quiet home preferably with retired owners. Misty is fine with other dogs, she is house-trained and could be left for a couple of hours. Before going to their new homes our dogs are neutered, micro-chipped, have had at least the first part of their vaccinations, have been treated for fleas and worms and have four weeks free insurance. We request a minimum donation of £150.If you can offer a dog a loving and secure home please visit us. We are open every day from 10am- 4pm. We do our best to match the right dog with the right owner and we always do home checks and follow-up visits. Please note that there are restrictions on rehoming dogs to families with children less than 7 years old, so please ask for details. You can help us to meet the costs of caring for so many dogs by making a donation or sponsoring a kennel for just £10 per month. Please contact us for details.l Call on 01525 220383 l E-mail: [email protected] Follow us on Facebook and Twitter (@AppledownRescue)l Visit our website www.appledownrescue.co.uk

Rugbytots started in 2006 to fill a gap in the child development sector by using Rugby specific skills to aid in the development of young children.

Our programme has been designed to develop your child’s physical, psychological and social attributes, as well as gently encouraging rugby specific skills such as running with the ball, finding space, kicking, catching, scoring a try and much more.

The success, popularity and growth of Rugbytots across the UK demonstrates the quality of our programme and the coaches who work so hard to consistently deliver. It is therefore no surprise to find that we are the most established, fastest growing and most innovative Rugby play programme for children aged two to seven.

All Rugbytots lead coaches are paediatric first aiders, Rugby qualified coaches, CRB checked and trained to a very high standard to ensure your children enjoy their time at Rugbytots in a safe and organised environment.
