Darwin drew a picture of a tree to show how species evolve. Scientists have taken this idea even further and shown that humans, animals, plants, insects and even the tiniest creatures are all descended from the first living things that ever came to be.

So how did life begin? Where did it first come from? Darwin wasn’t sure, but his theory explains how it evolved into the many living things we see on planet Earth today.

“As buds give rise by growth to fresh buds, and these, if vigorous, branch out and overtop on all sides many a

feebler branch, so by generation I believe it has been with the great Tree of Life, which fills with its dead and

broken branches the crust of the earth, and covers the surface with its

ever branching and beautiful ramifications.”
