LEADERSHIP HALL SPOTLIGHT
MAY 2019
2019 Inductee AnnouncedWe are pleased to announce the formal induction of Bill Bradley into the Forestry Leadership Hall.
Bill Bradley has played a crucial role in helping to clarify the tax law regarding timberland ownership, timber valuation and disposition. Collectively, these clarifications and changes paved the way for new opportunities for investment in timberland.
During his 48-year career with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan (now Eversheds Sutherland), Bill achieved several significant accomplishments. He obtained the first ruling from the IRS that recognized tax-exempt organizations, such as pension funds and university endowments, would not incur tax on unrelated business taxable income on their gains from disposition of standing timber. This ruling enabled pension funds and endowments to invest in timberlands, and led to the development of Timberland Investment Management Organizations (TIMOs). Another ruling recognized that timberlands could be held through a Real Estate Investment Trust, helping create liquidity for timber investments.
Bill maintains an active interest in all aspects of timberland ownership and forest management. From 1996 to 2015 he served on the World Forestry Center’s Board of Directors, was vice-president from 1999 to 2003, and currently serves on the honorary board. Bill helped create the WFC’s “Who Will Own the Forest?” Conference, now in its 15th year. He served on the Board of Visitors of Duke University’s School of Forestry (now the Nicholas School of the Environment) and is an honorary graduate of the Warnell School of Forestry at the University of Georgia.
