There’s Much to Celebrate in November and December
November and December are bountiful in opportunities to celebrate life!
We are lucky in Guilford County to be surrounded by a wide range of
cultures; take an opportunity to learn more about your neighbors and
friends by learning about the following holidays. Check out your local
newspapers for community celebrations of these holidays.
Day of the Dead
Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, began in
Mexico. It begins Sunday, October 31 and ends Tuesday,
November 2. Day of the Day is a celebration of loved
ones who have passed away and is celebrated with
festivals, food, and drink. Celebrants tend to the gravesite
of loved ones and even spend time engaging in activities
their loved one enjoyed!
Diwali
Diwali is a festival of lights and one of the
major festivals celebrated worldwide by
Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs. The holiday is
celebrated over 5 days with the most
activity occurring on the 3rd day (Thursday,
November 4 this year). Celebrants light
candles symbolizing enlightenment, share
festive meals and treats, exchange gifts, and participate in dancing!
Hanukkah
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated for 8
days, beginning this year on Sunday, November
28. It is another festival of lights, like Diwali!
Celebrants light an 9-branch candelabra called a
menorah. Celebrations also include exchanging
gifts, playing a game called dreidel, and eating
jelly donuts. Hanukkah commemorates the
recovery of Jerusalem and rededication of the Second Temple.

Meet Morgan!
Evergreens Lifestyle Center is thrilled to
announce the addition of our new Activities
Assistant, Morgan Camp! Morgan recently
moved to Greensboro from Jacksonville,
Florida and is a graduate Recreation
Therapy student at UNCG. She shared that
she really enjoys the Cardio Drumming
class (Wednesdays at 1pm) because it’s
“fun and upbeat.” Morgan looks forward to
implementing more craft projects because
she says that “being creative and expressing yourself through art is
important.” Once COVID-19 is no longer an issue, Morgan hopes to
organize social activities like barbeques, dancing, and mixers. Morgan
loves hiking and exploring new places, such as restaurants, new trails,
or new spots to relax. She has already added so much fun and
laughter to the Evergreens Center– stop in to meet her soon!
Morgan can be reached by email at act-asst@senior-resources-

HEALTH & WELLNESS 7
National Family Health History Day!
Did you know that Thanksgiving is also National Family Health History Day? Knowing your family’s
health history is extremely important because this can help you act on any concerns before they may become
a reality. Just because you have history of a particular disease in your family does not mean you are
guaranteed to get it but knowing the history of a disease can help you talk to your doctor and do the
necessary tests to check those concerns out.
For many families, having these types of conversations may not come naturally, but the information
revealed could potentially benefit everyone’s health. A good place to start is by explaining why you want to
know about your family members’ health by also sharing information of your own. It is not only important
for you but is also important for your current family and your future families.
So, how do you collect your family health history?
• Talk to your family. Write down the names of your close relatives from both sides of the family: parents,
siblings, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. Talk to these family members about what
conditions they have or had, and at what age the conditions were first diagnosed.
• Ask questions. To find out about your risk for chronic diseases, ask your relatives about which of these
diseases they have had and when they were diagnosed. Questions can include:
- Do you have any chronic diseases, such as heart disease or diabetes, or health conditions, such as
high blood pressure or high cholesterol?
- Have you had any other serious diseases, such as cancer or stroke? What type of cancer?
- How old were you when each of these diseases or health conditions was diagnosed? (If your relative
doesn’t remember the exact age, knowing the approximate age is still useful.)
- What is your family’s ancestry? From what countries or regions did your ancestors come to the
United States?
- What were the causes and ages of death for relatives who have died?
• Record the information and update it whenever you learn new family health history information. It is
helpful to organize the information in your family health history so it is easy to access when needed.
• Share family health history information with your doctor and other family members. If you are con-
cerned about diseases that are common in your family, talk with your doctor at your next visit. Even if
you don’t know all of your family health history information,
share what you do know. Family health history information,
even if incomplete, can help your doctor decide which screen-
ing tests you need and when those tests should start.
While you’re feasting with your loved ones this Thanksgiving, you
can feel good knowing that you all empowered each other to lead
healthier lives.

Caregiving During the Holidays
Tips to get the most out of the holidays while still maintaining caregiving obligations:
1. Be realistic about traditions and expectations. It is okay to serve store bought cookies if time and energy need to be conserved.
2. Prepare for family and visitors. Have conversations with family and friends regarding the loved one’s condition. Identify the areas that they can assist you in making the holidays a positive experience for everyone. Enlist others’ talents while they are visiting you. For example, if your son is good at carpentry, have him look at the squeaky door or have your granddaughter bring a favorite family dessert.
3. Time management is essential. Keep a calendar of all activities and select those that have the most meaning. Planning ahead for breaks is important so that no one feels overwhelmed with the hustle and bustle.
4. Familiarity is a necessity for people with memory impairment. Try to maintain the daily routine that you and your loved one are familiar with during the holiday season. If confusion increases during the later part of the day, celebrate earlier. Acknowledge your loved one’s cognitive capacity prior to involving them in an activity. Having them participate in a repetitive task such as folding napkins may help keep them calm.
5. Most importantly, take care of yourself. Let friends help you. Keep a list of errands or other simple tasks that you feel comfortable allowing others to perform. You don’t have to do everything yourself; take the time to indulge in a temptation— like chocolate!

“It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.”
Leanne Trainor was born in Massachusetts but now considers herself a southerner. She fondly remembers
playing outdoors as a child– hopscotch, jump rope, and “Red Rover, Come Over” were staples, along with her
neighborhood’s annual Spring Song Show. Leanne says, “I was bossy even back then.”
After high school, Leanne went to nursing school followed by dental hygienist school. She also obtained a bachelor’s degree from Guilford College in Forensic Biology and Criminal Justice. Leanne
spent almost 40 years as a dental hygienist. She has two sons, Timothy and Andrew, and 3 grandchildren (1 at Weaver Academy studying guitar, another at Weaver Academy studying ballet,
and 1 in medical school). After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Leanne knew she needed to stay active. She credits the exercise classes at the Evergreens Center for keeping her healthy. She says that “because I come here for exercise classes, no one knows I have Parkinson’s.” When asked what her favorite class is, she can’t pick just one! Leanne loves AFEP with Bobby, Cardio Drumming with Randi, Better Balance with Dr. Monica, and Chair Yoga with Chipper. She also re-started our book
club recently.
Leanne is known around the Center for her baking and generously keeping us supplied with cupcakes and treats. She is also the coordinator of Smile Bakers, a group of 25 women who create cakes for
children and families experiencing homelessness.
If you’ve seen Leanne lately, you might notice her special glow.
Frank, her boyfriend from when she was 14, tracked her down after 59 years of searching for her. Leanne shares
that they fell in love after Frank visited her in Greensboro recently. She has a trip planned to visit him at his home, a farm in the Ozark Mountains with 50 chickens and other assorted animals. Leanne says, “He’s a perfect match for
me. We’re both nuts.”
