    From the Principal

Partnerships: A focus for Ocean Road Primary School will be to build our partnerships with families and the wider community. The reason we believe this focus is important is

that by working on these partnerships student learning improves. Partnerships enable us to

tap into expertise beyond the school, they expose our students to a wide variety of

experiences and people and show students that significant adults value education and are

learners themselves. As the year progresses we will be looking at a variety of ways to

connect with our community. P&C and School Board both provide really valuable opportunities for our

parents to work with their school. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any ideas or queries

    regarding building our partnerships.

P&C: Members of P&C decided last night to change the meeting time

for the regular twice a term meeting. The meetings will now be held

during the school day. P&C believe this will provide our families with

young children more opportunity to attend meetings. The next

meeting will be Wednesday 11 May at 1.30pm in the staffroom. Please

join us to find out more about the school.

Attendance: The Department of Education has a

significant focus on student attendance at school.

This is because there is a direct link between

student learning and attendance. As a school we

monitor student attendance and we are developing

some strategies to support an improvement in our

attendance rates. Attendance data will be

presented to School Board on a regular basis with

a view to monitoring our progress and to see if we

are meeting our targets for improvement. I have

included the table as it highlights the impact of

    regular time away from school.

Nature Play: A discussion regarding the ORPS

Nature Play project was held at the P&C meeting.

P&C have committed $3,000 to improving the

Kindergarten outdoor space. This is a big

investment and provides us with the resources to

work on this important area. The school

successfully applied for a $50,000 grant from Medicare in 2014 for Nature Play. $34,566 was spent last

year in the following areas; PP for initiatives including the bike track and sensory garden; Year 1/2 for

initiatives including the vegetable garden and rainwater tank and Year 3/4 for initiatives including the

tropical garden, water tanks and musical pipes. The remaining funds from the grant are committed to

completing the projects with a water feature, Aboriginal meeting place and the sensory garden to be

completed. The Nature Play initiative has really enhanced the learning spaces our students engage

with. I plan to meet with a Grounds Committee early next term to look at our school’s overall Grounds

Plan with a view to including our keen gardeners in garden bed upgrades etc.

ANZAC Assembly: Our final assembly for the term will be the ANZAC assembly at 2pm on Friday 8th

April 2016. The ANZAC assembly is an opportunity for us to remember our serviceman, both past and

    present.

  • Student Leadership: I will be attending Parliament House with our Student Council today. It is a privilege for me to go to Parliament House with our young leaders. They are a fine group of students. I am looking

forward to talking to them on the train journey to and from Perth and discuss plans for their leadership

    journey this year.

Visible Learning: I recently attended a Visible Learning symposium with a number of teachers from Ocean

Road Primary School. I am sure most of you are aware that ORPS is a Visible Learning school. Visible

Learning is a term coined by Professor John Hattie. Hattie’s ongoing research highlights the teaching and

learning strategies that have the highest impact on student learning. As a Visible Learning School ORPS

implements many of these strategies and is continually striving to improve the impact of teaching on student

learning. Professor Hattie was the key presenter and mentioned Ocean Road Primary School as a school

that has developed the capacity of teachers to improve teaching and learning. Our teachers are to be

    commended for their hard work.

    Scholastic Book Fair

Thank you to all the wonderful families that supported our Monster Book Fair. Your patience at the busy times was very much appreciated.

It was a great success with the children getting excited about reading all the fabulous books we had on offer.

With your support, we raised $801 in Scholastic rewards to enhance our library resources.

Giving kids access to good books and the opportunity to choose their own books motivates them to read more, and like most acquired skills, the more children practice reading, the better they’ll achieve. Reading is vital to every child’s success, and raising children as readers opens them up to a world of opportunity and imagination. Denise Hobson Library Officer Book Fair Coordinator

I would like to thank our wonderful parents, grandparents and helpers who volunteer in the canteen when they can. Any help is appreciated and makes such a big difference to the running
