Throughout their schooling years, students learn to use an increasing range of skills, strategies and knowledge to fluently read and comprehend a range of texts on increasingly challenging topics.

Research shows that reading fluency is the important first step to be mastered before comprehension. Reading fluency is more than just reading fast: it involves both word recognition automaticity (word recognition) and prosody (good expression).

1) Automaticity which is the ability to read words automatically or effortlessly. Automaticity is also known as decoding.

To achieve automoaticity, the reader needs to have developed phonological awareness, phonics and have a good sight word vocabulary, including developing knowledge of words that are increasingly complex. The automaticity to decode, recognise and recall words allows the cognitive space for the reader to access the meaning of the text.

Automaticity has a quantitative definition, referring to the accuracy (number of errors, compared to number of correct words read) and the rate (number of words read per minute).

2) Prosody which the ability to understand the patterns of stress and intonation of what is being read. Prosody is also known as reading with expression.

To achieve prosody, the reader must understand the phrasing, intonation, rhythm and pace of the written form of the language. Prosodic reading, with its regard for the smooth flow of language, helps communicate the broader and deeper meaning of what is read.

Prosody has a qualitative definition, referring to the quality of reading. This includes finding an appropriate voice, during silent and out-loud reading, for different characters and moods.

A quality literacy program supports the development of reading fluency in a number of ways including:

Modelling Fluent Reading whereby the student listens to an expert reader who demonstrates fluent reading of a text

Guided Oral Reading Instruction whereby the student reads the text aloud with discussion and feedback aimed at developing specific strategies and skills.

Repeated Reading whereby the student re-reads a short and meaningful section of a text until a suitable level of fluency is reached.

At Ashfield Public School, quality literacy programs explicitly teach automaticity and prosody to support students becoming fast and efficient readers who can comprehend a wide range of texts for a range of purposes.

Reading fluency supports our students to use language to think imaginatively, creatively and interpretively. It helps our students to read for enjoyment and develop their love of literature. Reading fluency makes it possible for our students to use reading to create and take advantage of opportunities as informed and responsible citizens. It opens up the potential of reading to have a profound impact on shaping understandings and values and critically interact with the world.

What a big term it has been for Kindergarten!

Last week was Harmony Week, a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism. Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of who we are or where our families are from. We loved seeing everyone in their cultural dress and clothing representing their family history. Kindergarten students also enjoyed visiting other classrooms and teachers to learn more about different cultures.

Kindergarten students have been learning about living things in science this term with a focus on identifying living things and describing their needs. This week students participated in workshops by Mad About Science where students engaged in hands-on activities including science experiments, using a microscope and creating a worm farm.

We can’t believe we have almost completed our first term at primary school! Kindergarten teachers are so proud of the learning students have been doing this term and can’t wait for more learning and fun in Term 4!

Term 1 is nearly over, all the staff and students are settled, happy and actively learning in their new class environments. The excitement and commitment in many Triple E Initiatives has been growing over the term. Some of the Triple E Initiatives that the Stage 1 students have been attending are Typing, Ukelele, Lego Club, Robotics, Coding, Drama, Operation Art, Recorder, Junior Choir and Gardening. We are so lucky at Ashfield Public School to have teachers who love teaching students new experiences and the love of life-long learning.

The students have been involved in gardening in the Harmony Garden and the garden beds in the front of the school. They have enjoyed using all the green spaces in the school. They have had many opportunities in Science and Mathematics to use our outdoor spaces to appreciate, observe, take notes, draw and care for their environment.

Homework has been going well online. It’s great see so many students trying their best to consolidate their learning at home, especially their reading and number skills.

Miss Saunders has been delivering a few lessons to classes around Phasmids, Stick Insects to provide students with learning experiences about their life cycles.

Another great week at Ashfield Public School is Harmony Week. It began with a bang with a very interactive and engaging drumming session which exposed students to African culture.

We were fortunate to experience two Japanese workshops. The first was a vocabulary and song lesson by Mrs Louise George. The second workshop was a hands-on event provided by the staff from the Japanese Language School. A special thanks to all volunteers for adding to our festivities.

Harmony Day was another amazing day full of pride and respect for each and every person’s culture organised by Mrs Drummond. All students enjoyed the procession of the flags followed by a special assembly. Students then experienced rotational workshops to experience a variety of cultures. It was fantastic to see so many students wearing orange and clothes representing their culture.

Thank you to all the parents for their ongoing support for our students care and learning.

Stage 2Stage PageStage 2 incursion was an amazing learning experience. The Rhythms of the World Drumming workshop provided the opportunity for all the students to play drums and experience rhythms from Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. It was very interactive with students using not only drum percussion, but also body and vocal percussion and to dance along with the beats. Students copied drum beats and were able to lead and create their own rhythms which the other students followed.

Harmony Day was a huge success among Stage 2 and the students enjoyed their round the world trips into classrooms. Students had an opportunity to learn about different cultures such Italian, Spanish and Australia’s Indigenous culture. They embraced the culture of each different activity and enjoyed learning about Indigenous paintings, Worry Dolls and the Tarantella. Harmony Day is a great way to celebrate the diversity of the wonderful cultures we have here at Ashfield Public School.

Stage 3Stage PageStage 3 have had an amazing few weeks of Term 1. Students are feeling more settled in their classes, getting to know their teachers and new classmates.

We have all enjoyed taking part in the Chinese Pottery workshops, held by our amazing Ms Manning and Ms Chi.

Many of our Year 6 students sat the Selective High School test in Week 7. This was a very nerve-racking experience for many, but all students did very well. We hope they are all feeling more relaxed and wish them the best for their results in Term 2.

6B have enjoyed their last few weeks of the Fort Street enrichment and transition program. They’ve been working in the science labs and exploring electrical circuits. We know 5T will love their transition program in Term 4.

Our Year 6s had a blast at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, where they went on a self-guided tour with a focus on the structural, behavioural and physiological adaptations that sea creatures make to survive in their aquatic environments. We saw Sharks, Stingrays, Dugongs, Penguins and Sea Turtles, then later enjoyed our lunch in the sunshine. Many of our Year 6s hadn’t been on a train in months too, so there was much excitement. Altogether a very fabulous day!

Year 5s are now off at Berry Sport and Recreational Camp. For many of our students this is their first night away from home. We are sure they are all having a wonderful time and cannot wait to hear all of their stories. Some of the activities Year 5s will be completing are: archery, canoeing, rogaining, team building and having a cookout, making damper.

What is Harmony Week?

Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world. Harmony Week (15th of March to the 19th of March 2021) was led by the Department of Home Affairs to recognise our cultural diversity and inclusion.

Why orange?

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. Australians can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Our cultural diversity

Australia is a vibrant and multicultural country — from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world.

Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are. It makes Australia a great place to live.

An integrated multicultural Australia is an integral part of our national identity. All people who migrate to Australia bring with them some of their own cultural and religious traditions, as well as taking on many new traditions. Collectively, these traditions have enriched our nation.

LACLA ReportHi everyone! We have received some questions about LACLA, so in this report we will be answering them!

Q: What does LACLA stand for?

A: LACLA stands for Let African Children Learn Association.

Q: Does the school support all of Africa?

A: No. We are part of 1 huge organization. We support Zambia, which is a country in Africa.

Q: How will we know if there are mufti days?

A: We will let you know in these 4 ways- We will go up on morning lines, talk about it in the newsletter, put up posters (door of flight deck, courtyard gate, assembly door canteen side, and in the village.), and it will go on school Enews.

Q: What if we want to donate at other times a side from mufti days?

A: In your classroom you have a bucket labelled LACLA. If you don’t know were it is, ask your teacher. Put any money you want to donate during the week in that bucket. We will also be coming around to your classroom every Monday to collect any donations.

Q: who created LACLA?

A: The creator of LACLA is Dorothy Makasa but the representative at our school is Mrs. Drummond.

Technology Report

The Apple Watch Series 6 is the latest release from the apple watch series and is the most advanced. It has a lot more features and advancements than the previous apple watches. It was released on the 18th of September and it already has multiple styles. Some features that the Apple Watch Series 6 has is that it measures your blood oxygen level, It also records your beats per minute (BPM) and if there are any irregularities in your BPM it notifies you so you can consult your doctor. It also includes a fitness tracker that tracks how long you have been exercising, how many calories you have burnt and how much you have travelled. The fitness tracker is water resistant so you can still measure your fitness in the water. The Apple Watch Series 6 is a great smartwatch for everybody and it cost $400 so it is pretty cost efficient. We rate it 4/5 stars.

Knowing that the chances of her winning are close to zero, Katniss must try to survive for her sister’s sake. Katniss will have to do things she had previously disliked in order to survive the games.

Library NewsThe students are enjoying the many activities offered my the Library.

Last week a group of mainly Year 3s were interested in meeting together to form a book club. They decided to read a Roald Dahl favourite so will be discussing The Twits next time they meet. It is inspiring to see young students so eager to share and discuss popular literature.

We recognised International Women’s Day with a beautiful display of books outlining many of the achievements of women. These included Rosa Parkes for her stand on civil Rights, Malala Yousafzai for her bravery and wish for a better world and an historical figure called Daisy Bates, an Irish woman who arrived in Australia in 1883 and spent much of her life researching and writing about the diverse Aboriginal languages and culture.

It is so exciting to recognise Harmony Week. Our First Nations students leading the flag ceremony through to all the performers and assistants in the Assembly, a very big thank you. To the parent volunteers for the fabulous workshops and to all the teachers for their informative and colourful lessons representing some of the cultures in our school, a great effort recognised and appreciated.

The Australian Open came to a close on the 21st of February, with Novak Djokovic beating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the men’s finals. In the women’s finals, Naomi Osaka defeated Jennifer Brady in straight sets as well. Unfortunately, Australian Favourite, Ash Barty was eliminated in the Quarter-Finals After losing to Karolina Muchová.

The plants are growing great, please remember to check on the plants and herbs daily and make sure to water them! You are definitely allowed to pick them to make them into wonderful meals.

Recipe of the WeekMini Beef Sliders

Ingredients

• 6 brioche sliders

• 250g beef mince

• ¼ red onion

• ½ zucchini

• ½ carrot

• 1 egg

• 1 Tbl tomato sauce

• ¼ C panko breadcrumbs

• 3 Green oakleaf lettuce leaves

• 2 truss cocktail tomatoes

• 1 Tbl tomato chutney

• 3 slices Jarlsberg cheese

Method

1. Preheat oven to 160 degrees Celsius.

2. Finely dice red onion, grate carrot and zucchini.

3. Mix mince, onion carrot and zucchini in a glass bowl, add egg, tomato sauce and breadcrumbs.

4. Roll mixture into small burger patties, to fit the slider roll.

5. Cook burger patties on medium heat in a skillet, browning edges evenly.

6. Place cooked burger patties in the oven on a tray with baking paper. Allow 15 minutes, to ensure burgers are cooked through.

7. Slice the cheese, cocktail tomatoes, wash lettuce and pull into smaller pieces.

8. Slice slider roll and spread chutney under the top piece.

9. Assemble the burgers and serve immediately.

Dear Advice Box,

Lately at school, I’ve been getting more and more stomach aches, and sadly, I think I know why. I keep telling myself to eat healthy and avoid sweets and junk food because I know being healthy is one of the school choices, but I just can’t resist it. Everyday my mum packs me an apple, a sandwich and a bag of chips, and everyday my mum finds the apple and sandwich box untouched, but the chip bag empty. Sometimes I also plead for some of my friends’ snacks, but it’s only because I am sick of sandwiches and I don’t like apples. I’m getting unhealthier by the minute, what should I do!?

Dear Selena,

You might have to be healthier to stop having stomach aches, as you suggested. A good way to resist eating unhealthy foods is not to not have them in the first place, and you can ask your mum to stop packing chips into your lunch. Everytime you eat a fruit or something healthy for you, you can reward yourself with a small treat. If you are sick of eating the same thing each day, you can always ask your parents to make you something different! For example, you can explain how you don’t like sandwiches, and your parents will definitely cooperate and make something delicious that you love, like, pasta! However, if you still feel sick then you should ask your parents to visit the doctor. Healthy eating is key to good health overall!

We’re traversing the wall with excitement!

The P&C is excited to officially announce that a traversing wall (a climbing wall where you traverse sideways instead of going up – like the example picture) will be installed at school in June this year. The wall has been made entirely possible thanks to an Active Australia Innovation Challenge Grant from the Heart Foundation.

And, now thanks to the amazing generosity of several local businesses and the APS community, we are going to be able to make the wall even longer than planned. Thank you to Ashfield Mall, Slater Gordon Ashfield, Andy Wu of Hudson McHugh and Specsavers in Ashfield Mall for kindly sponsoring the extension of the wall and the installation of a mural.

The wall will be installed on the side of Ms Pandit’s classroom as pictured and will be a fantastic way of keeping APS students active. Soft-fall will also be installed to ensure it’s safe for all ages and abilities.

This type of weight-bearing play has been proven to:

• increase fitness• help with hand-eye coordination and right/left side

brain coordination• improve balance, core and upper body strength (vital

for learning to write)• improve core functions like working memory (the

skills needed to use both hands and feet and deal with varying inclines, levels and distances between climbing holds)

• enable problem solving• help children physically self-regulate themselves –

great for getting back in to school work

• and improve mental health outcomes

To make the new wall look even better, APS school parent and after-school art teacher, Michelle Kistima-Menser has kindly offered to design a mural to paint under the traversing wall and we will be calling for students and volunteers to help paint it in May.

We are looking for a videographer or photographer to document (with the P&C’s help) the whole process of creating the wall and develop a short video (nothing flash!) for promotion of the wall to other schools and our sponsors. Frequently Asked Questions

Will the wall be available to all years to use?Yes – during break times the wall will be used by years 2-6, as the Kindy and Year 1 children have the Wangal playground equipment to use. But all classes will use the wall as part of their sporting activities.

Is the wall suitable for children of all abilities?Yes, the wall is being designed so that children of all ages and abilities should be able to use and enjoy it.

Will children be able to use the wall after school?Yes, as long as they are supervised by an adult (like they would be regardless if the wall was there).

Is the wall safe?The wall complies with all safety requirements and has the required soft-fall around it to ensure children are safe if they fall.

SCHOOL UNIFORM DONATIONS NEEDED

Please consider donating unwanted uniforms that are clean and useable to the second hand uniform stall. Your donations help to give a family an affordable uniform and raise money to support the school at the same time! Uniforms can be dropped at the front office or handed in at the stall Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8:30am (next to assembly).

GARDEN CLUB

Gardening is a wonderful opportunity to be in a multi-sensory environment where children can touch and feel plants and be exposed to the amazing scents of growing herbs.

We look forward to planting some more vegetables next term with the generous voucher provided to us by Bunnings Ashfield.

Ordering - Head to www.quickcliq.com.au to order break 1 meals. Orders must be placed by 8.30am each day and can be placed online or paid for with cash or EFTPOS at the canteen. Snacks for break 1 or break 2 can be ordered over the counter before school, or paid for with cash by students at both Break 1 and Break 2.

Cancellations – if you would like to cancel a meal order, cut-off for cancellations is 8am each morning, which can be done easily via Quickcliq or by phoning the canteen on 0406092927.
