Dear Friends of the Animals,

Since 1962, the Peninsula SPCA has sheltered and found loving homes for the Peninsula’s stray and abandoned companion animals. Volunteers and staff have cared for thousands of sick, injured and frightened homeless pets over the years, some of which had also been abused and abandoned to die. There is no greater joy at the shelter than when one of our cats, dogs, bunnies or birds heads happily out of our facility to its new home and life.

The experience of sharing our lives with companion animals is an opportunity we hope to make available to all citizens and animals of our community. In years past, the euthanization of abandoned animals had been accepted as a sad result and reality of the crisis of pet overpopulation in our country. However, now a wonderful and brave new philosophy is emerging in the animal welfare world that encourages us to believe in our ability to find new homes for every adoptable animal in our care. Nationwide, animal control agencies are partnering with private shelters and rescue groups to embrace the “adoption guarantee” approach to animal sheltering. The Peninsula SPCA will become an adoption guarantee organization in 2013 by committing to spay and neuter all of our animals before they are adopted, increasing our network of foster homes, exploring opportunities to transport adoptable animals from our shelter to other adoption guarantee facilities, and working closely with the new Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter to expand our mutual abilities to help pets in need. We will have no holding time limit, and a lack of space will never be a reason to end the life of an adoptable animal.

Our new organization will have to be more creative and resourceful than ever, especially in how we raise funds to operate. In 2013 we will stop serving as the animal impoundment facility for the Peninsula and will no longer receive funding from our local cities and counties. We will rely on the private support of our citizens and businesses who share in our commitment to maintain an adoption guarantee shelter option for our community.

Please consider supporting the Peninsula SPCA and its new vision in 2013 with a one-time or monthly gift of $25 or more, if possible. The success of our new organization will depend on your generosity and commitment to help change the future for the Peninsula’s homeless pets.

With sincere gratitude,

In 2013, the Peninsula SPCA will begin an exciting new chapter in its 50-year history.

Will you help us succeed?

We celebrate Gloria Daugherty’s 28th year anniversary with the Peninsula SPCA. For 28 years, Gloria has served as a Kennel Assistant, devoting her life to the care of abandoned and homeless animals in her community. Her commitment for animal welfare has always been a significant part of her life. Gloria shared that “the animals admitted to the Peninsula SPCA, stray or owner surrender, are so grateful for a gentle pet and a calming voice while they are here, and I can show them the affection they need and deserve.”

As a firm believer that rescued animals make the best additions to families, she shared that, “animals that are given a second chance are so forgiving and have so much unconditional love to share with their care givers.” Gloria found her best friend Penny, a copper 12-year-old Dachshund, 10 years ago at the Peninsula SPCA and instantly fell in love. “It was love at first sight and I knew she had to be mine.” During her 28 years of service, she has seen progressive and positive changes at the Peninsula SPCA.

“The best part of my job is seeing the pets I helped care for get adopted. The adoption numbers just keep going up.” She started as a volunteer at 21 years of age and has been a valued employee since her start date. Gloria doesn’t

have plans of slowing down. She looks forward to her future making a positive difference in the lives of the animals at the Peninsula SPCA. “I just love my furry friends.”

Community spotlight

Foster Parent volunteers for the Peninsula SPCA provide caring temporary homes to homeless pets needing individualized attention and little extra “TLC.” They may be recovering from illness, need socialization, or too young to be placed in a forever home just yet.

Foster mom Rebecca Waters shares the rewards of fostering orphaned animals in need of tender loving care. Rebecca opened her home to help several SPCA dogs. “Big,” a hound, was too shy and fearful to stay at the shelter; “Velcro,” a dog whose leg had to be amputated due to a life-threatening injury; and “Bernice,” a kitty with an upper respiratory infection, have all recovered and found their forever homes thanks to Rebecca.

“Taking these pets into our home and loving them back to health is a great experience,” said Rebecca. “My husband and I have truly become attached to each of them, however finding the right match to place them in forever homes is the best feeling!”

Our foster volunteers are critical to the shelter’s ability to save the lives of adoptable pets in our community, because they allow us to “expand” the capacity of the SPCA to help animals in need. When you join in our Foster Family• You directly help save animal lives!• You take part in the animal-human bond experience without long-term commitment.• You can help us to find a new home for your foster pet. • You give the animals a great gift that money can’t buy – your love!

HOW DO I BECOME A FOSTER PARENT?

If you are interested in fostering an animal, please contact Lou Siaosi, Foster Care Coordinator for the Peninsula SPCA, at (757) 595-1399, extension 113, or by email at [email protected].

Nugget, a small four pound Jack Russell Terrier puppy came into the Peninsula SPCA with a birth defect leaving him with three legs. This puppy is a true survivor who was able to defend himself without food or shelter for days. When brought into the Peninsula SPCA, he was underweight and malnourished. The staff nursed him back to health, then flourished with his foster family until he was strong enough to be adopted. Nugget is now living with his forever home where he will never be abandoned again.

Peninsula SPCA’s 2013 Dog and Cat of the YearCongratulations to Nikko and Muffin Fox for winning this year’s cutest pet photo contest, therefore winning the title of Peninsula SPCA’s 2013 Dog and Cat of the Year. Nikko and Muffin Fox will be featured on all promotional materials for the whole year of 2013. It was a tight race between dog and cat contestants, but Nikko and Muffin Fox came out on top. Thank you to everyone who fundraised for the orphaned animals at the Peninsula SPCA. All together, we raised $5,386 to care for the animals in need at the SPCA. Thank you to all who participated!

Nikko - 2013 Dog of the Year Muffin - 2013 Cat of the Year

Dedicated animal lover, Dana, and her classmate Shelby from Dozier Middle School spent hours of time persuading fellow students and school faculty to donate food to the SPCA by launching a two-week food drive. “Dana especially went the extra mile by making nearly 1,200 reminder slips for every student in the building (which she delivered during homeroom). She also made posters, made an appearance on the Morning Show and wore a custom-made “SPCA Food Drive” t-shirt to school. Dana spearheaded and hosted a food drive that brought over

100 dog and cat food items to the shelter! We appreciate her enthusiasm and hope that the animals will appreciate it, too,” says Ms. Morgan, Dozier Elementary School Guidance Counselor.

Our MissionOur mission is to advocate and provide for the humane care and welfare of animals. We are committed to finding a loving home for every orphaned pet in our community.

A New DirectionThe year 2013 marks a significant and long-awaited milestone in the history of the Peninsula SPCA. As of July 2013, the Peninsula SPCA will become an Adoption Guarantee Organization. As a privately owned animal welfare organization, we are committing to save all healthy and treatable animals that come into our care. We are proud to announce 2,937 lives were saved in 2012!

Adoption Guarantee OrganizationThe success of an Adoption Guarantee philosophy is contingent upon the partnership of all animal organizations and the community, and not simply by ending the humane euthanasia of adoptable animals within one organization. In an ideal, animal lifesaving organization, no adoptable animals would be humanely euthanized simply because of lack of kennel space or means of animal population control. Our core value is that every life matters. At all times, we are animal welfare advocates and will continue to be their voice and providers until they are adopted to loving homes.

Private humane organizations receive no government funds and carry no legal authority. The role of a private humane organization, such as the Peninsula SPCA, is to provide resources to save healthy, treatable animals from death, to treat animals with more compassion and understanding, and to help people have happier, more fulfilling relationships with their pets.

Take a journey with us in becoming an adoption guarantee organization. Here are ways you can help us continue our lifesaving mission.
