2018 Classes and Parent Requests

It is that time of year when classes for the following year begin to be formed after careful teach-er feedback and collaboration. We aim to develop classes that are positive and conducive to strong learning and much information is considered by teams of teachers in creating this. Aca-demic needs as well as social and emotional developmental needs are key areas to balance as well and behavior and gender equity. Parent requests about student placement for 2018 will only be considered under a strong social and/emotional need. Parents must formally request consideration by writing/emailing myself (Principal) or Shannon Whelan (Acting Assistant Prin-cipal) by FRIDAY 10th NOVEMBER. Please note: Consideration will not be given to teacher requests or student requests due to friendships. All students have the opportunity to select up to five peers they would like to be in a class with next year. All children are guaranteed to have at least one child from their list in their 2018 class. ALSO - requests must be re-submitted every year. Requests from previous years are not considered as situations change as does staffing and teacher knowledge. Do not rely on previous information to be considered for next year.

Year 5 & 6 CAMP ADANAC

Our upper school students have been enjoying the beautiful natural bush environment at Camp ADANAC in the Yarra Valley. The year 6 students returned yesterday with our year 5 students heading home tomorrow. This adventure laden camp sees our students enjoying swimming, kayaking and yabbying among other engaging tasks. I would like to thank Sherryn Owen for her comprehensive planning of this camp and the team of teachers and parents who have volunteered their time to ensure our children had a great time. Our year 3 & 4 students head away next week.

Reviewing our Vision, Pedagogical Principles and Values?

We are firmly entrenched in an evaluative process that has been taking place for the last two terms. Our educational partnership with the BASTOW Educational Institute has teamed us with an educational coach. In our time working together we have established that it is critical that all members of our community - students, staff and parents have visible voice in creating the cul-ture and climate of GK. A key question that has been pondered is ‘Does every community member, regardless of age, know the schools vision, mission and values? Do they roll off the tongue easily?’

We found the answer to be no. Our vision, which has been there before I arrived in 2011, is ‘Children, Teachers, Parents: A partnership for the future.’ An aha moment arrived with the understanding that a vision should change with growth of the school and also be able to be articulated easily by our students—the key priority of our vision. This same thinking moves to our values. Review of our values occurred over 6 years ago however in this process not all voices were equally considered. It’s time to shift this.

Our Term 3 Curriculum day saw staff work through a variety of tasks that allowed us to explore key vocabulary and beliefs to rise to the surface—providing an indication of what we value. These same tasks were completed by our School Council members at our recent meeting and are now currently being undertaken with all our students. Today I am sending home the key questions via an online survey that we would love you to fill in (parent—not children) so that our final layer of voice and values can be added to our process.

This information is going to be collated and synthesized with our coach to begin the redevelop-ment of a shared vision, pedagogical principles and values that are simple and represent what we all value and want GK to stand for. A hard copy can also be found on the following page if you prefer—just return to the school, either your child’s teacher or the office. Feedback will close on Friday 17th November. Thanks for your time. Link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FVHWCYG

Have a great week. LeanneLeanneLeanneLeanne

If you were in an EXCELLENT SCHOOL,

If GK was an ANIMAL or an IMAGE what would it be and WHY? Eg. A butterfly because… A

tree because….

If GK was a SONG what would it be?

If GK was a METAPHOR what would it be and WHY? Eg. GK is like a cave, a place to explore and

unearth unknown treasures...

We are refocusing on our vision, values and pedagogical principles. Your voice is important in continuing to grow the culture and climate we want at GK. These

simple tasks will assist in doing this. They may sound strange but collation process cleverly helps

articulate what each member of our community values.

Please return to the office by Friday 17th November or complete online at https://

www.surveymonkey.com/r/FVHWCYG.

What is GK known for? (What would you say to someone)

What would you see? What would you feel? What would you hear?
