‘‘Every morning I awake torn between a desire to save the world and an inclination to savor it. This makes it hard to plan the day. But if we forget to savor the world, what possible reason do we have for saving it? In a way, the savoring must come first.

Carbon Pricing 101
When carbon emissions cost money, we produce
less of them. Union of Concerned Scientists
13
If you believe the IPCC, we have to do everything…. including using
the most efficient tool,
carbon pricing.
14
A price on carbon makes everyone partner in the effort.
15
A carbon tax makes everything else we need to do easier:
• Clear market signal promotes renewable energy investments
16
A carbon tax can affect industries for which emissions standards are hard to regulate, such as -• glue • glass • paper • pulp • steel • chemicals, etc.
17
A carbon tax makes everything else we need to do easier:
• Reduces power sector emissions more and faster than the Paris Accords,
• Regulatory efforts can be targeted for transportation and agriculture, (less responsive to energy price signaling but generate high emissions).
18
A carbon tax can affect emissions
beyond our borders.
Conclusions: Despite the loss of $3.8 billion in coal and related industries, the region still has a net gain of $10 billion, a net increase in jobs*, and a substantial increase in population.
