Where Is San Tan Valley?San Tan Valley consists of the south-east portion of what people used to refer to asQueen Creek. Although the official boundaries are very irregular, it goes as far northas E. Queen Creek Rd., to the south as far as E Olberg Rd., as far east as SierraVista Dr., and as far west as N. Thompson Rd.

It includes the communities of Superstition Views, Copper Basin, Johnson Ranch, andRancho Bella Vista, among many others.

From Wikipedia:

San Tan Valley is located in the unincorporated area between thetowns of Queen Creek to the north and west, and Florence to the south. The area is also boundby the San Tan Mountains Regional Park on the west and the Gila River IndianCommunity on the southwest”

Why Did They Create San Tan Valley? The area commonly referred to as San Tan Heights, San Tan Foothills, Greater San Tanand simply the San Tan Area was really never part of Queen Creek Town Limits, and thelack of an official name has caused a lot of confusion for local residents, utilitycompanies, realtors, and Queen Creek Officials. It is believed that “branding” thearea as different from the Town of Queen Creek will actually benefit the area.

When Did The Change Become Official? On July 9th, 2009, Pinal County District 2 Supervisor Bryan Martyn released theofficial notice declaring the formation of “Pinal County’s Newest Community” (Seethe link to the memo further down).

Martyn believes the area will benefit from being distinctly separate from QueenCreek and that this will be a positive change to the area’s image:

As of July 1st, 2009, residents were told to begin using San Tan Valley, AZ as theirnew address and they were instructed to notify all individuals and companies thatthey do business with about the new address change.

What Subdivisions Are in San Tan Valley, AZ?

“When the economic recovery happens, and it WILL happen, companies will belooking to expand their businesses or regional offices in places like the San TanValley,” Martyn says. “We have a young, vibrant and diverse workforce that wouldlove the chance to work closer to home. We need this marketable identity toattract the kind of economic development that pays higher wages.”

Bryan Martyn. Pinal County District 2 Supervisor

What If I Continue to Use Queen Creek As MyAddress? This is not recommended of course. But there is a definite financial impact toindividuals and companies to re-print stationary and update customer records. So itis widely believed that the U.S. Postal Service will continue to recognize the oldaddress for a 1 year “grace period”. After July 1, 2010, you may very well haveissues with your mail if you don’t change to the new address.

You are advised not to rely on companies you do business with to update theirrecords for you automatically. You should notify all mailing list companies, catalogcompanies, utilities, magazines, etc and let them know about the new address toensure that your mail delivery is not disrupted.

However, your new voter registration address WILL be updated automatically, so youdon’t need to worry about contacting voter registration.

Does My Zip Code Change?Yes, zip codes were changed when they created San Tan Valley. Zip codes thatbegan with 852 now begin with 851 instead.

Who Came Up With the Name San Tan Valley? The voting public did. Voting on the name to be chosen was held from June 19, 2009to June 22, 2009 and the new name was announced June 23, 2009. San Tan Valley(picked for its proximity to the San Tan Mountains) was the winner with 21% of thevote. 2nd runner up was Bella Vista with 15% of the vote.

How Big Is San Tan Valley? Is It A Town? Who RunsIt?San Tan Valley has a population of about 80,000 making it the largest populationcenter in Pinal County.

However San Tan Valley is unincorporated, so it is not a city or town and has nomunicipal government of its own. According to Wikipedia:

“…an unincorporated community is usually not subject to or taxed by a municipal government.Such regions are generally administered by default as a part of larger administrative divisions, such as a township, borough, county, state, province, canton, parish, or country”

So in this case, San Tan Valley is “run” by Pinal County and the State of Arizona.

Fun Facts About The Area:

Before it was named Town of Queen Creek, the area used to be calledRittenhouse because of a railroad spur at Rittenhouse and Ellsworth. Folkswould flag down the train from the spur to catch a ride into Phoenix.

Queen Creek actually got its name from a creek called Picket Post Creek over100 miles away in the mining area of the Superior Mountains. That creek ranfrom the mountains, past the Silver Queen mine, through Queen CreekCanyon and ended up north of the San Tan Mountains. When the name of
