FRC Calendar Notes

May 26-June 10, 2006 Lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado; Lyrics by Galt MacDermot Directed by Joey Sayer

The 1960s and flower power live again in this classic musical, celebrating the age of "Aquarius". Hair has no storyline to speak of. Unlike most musicals of its period, it was based on a vision -- a sense of a particular time and place -- rather than a plot. Hair presents a series of incidents in the lives of a tribe of hippies, all non-collegiate dropouts devoted to a philosophy of "make love, not war".. In the course of the play, the characters reject the values of their parents and the establishment, lashing out at pollution, war, the draft, racial bigotry, and what they see as mindless patriotism, rigid sexual standards, and middle-class hypocrisy. The tribe finally groups together at the end to lament the "Flesh Failures" and to "Let the Sun Shine In".

Director’s Notes Our "Team Evita" has shown phenomenal care and talent and patience in the mounting of a production as ambitious as this. Cast, crew, orchestra and production team have been very much tried in the crucible of challenges originating from bringing life to so complicated a score and script. And, as you no doubt will concur, we've succeeded! Jim's musical direction, Joanne's orchestral direction and vocal assistance, Karen's choreography,

Darren's essential rehearsal piano plunking and then performance, Faith's create-a-costuming magic along with Darren, Roberta, Rachel and crew, Ryan's hairstyling, Mary-Anne's magic with the children's choir, Pasqualina and crew's stage-management, Lynda as producer and Tim as director's assistant, Paul and crew's lighting, and John's and crew's sound design, along with Bill's sets, added to the very many others who've shared time, talent and expertise, are all integral parts of our success. Note the very many names in the program, cast and crew, one by one: it is to them all that we give heart-felt applause and gratitude. Bravo! We’re participating in a dream. The cultural icons of Che and Eva most likely never met; he was fully nine years younger than she. In this production Che Guevara’s overriding narrative along with Eva Peron’s arising from her own funeral gave rise to the S.H.E. principle of staging: Simple, Honest, Effective. Inasmuch as the genre of minimalist theatre requires great imaginative participation from the audience, it does evoke a dream-like quality of instantaneous transitions from place to place despite little more than rostrum blocks and light. Given the magic of the choice of light, the design herein serves specifically to bathe the action and its individuals in the hierarchical principles of Spiral Dynamics, as colours all of our lives, whether we know it or not. (We recently applied these principles to our productions of Jesus Christ Superstar, and Iolanthe, and Fiddler on the Roof). (For an overview by this writer of Graves’ theory as it applies to both stage-craft and life please see: http://www.morpheustheatre.ca/news/colourofcharacter.pdf Evita’s continuing fame, as well as Che Guevara’s, appears to arise predominantly out of our fascination with our continuing inability to integrate the whole person with our polarized expectations of the essential controversy between good and evil. So too for the continuing iconoclasm we perpetuate in our times. However, this prevalent struggle to give unqualified approbation to our heroes, past and present, is likely a good thing ~ integration is about the continuing acceptance of all. In our doing this production and by your very attendance, we give the lives of Che and Eva continuing credence; so may it be for all of us. As Eva herself chants, for “All of us!”

“EVITA” Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber

Lyrics by Tim Rice

Show Synopsis Argentina's controversial First Lady is the subject of this dynamic musical masterpiece. As an illegitimate fifteen-year-old, Eva Maria Ibarguren Duarte escaped her dirt-poor existence for the bright lights of Buenos Aires. Driven by ambition and blessed with charisma, she was a starlet at twenty-two, the president's mistress at twenty-four, First Lady at twenty-seven, and dead at thirty-three. Eva Peron - saint to the working-class, reviled by the aristocracy and mistrusted by the military - was destined to leave a fascinating political legacy unique in the 20th century. Told through a compelling score that fuses haunting chorales with exuberant Latin, pop and jazz influences, Evita creates an arresting theatrical portrait as complex as the woman herself. Songs from this show include "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina", "High Flying, Adored" and "Another Suitcase in Another Hall".

FRC Mission Statement Front Row Centre Players Society, Calgary's premier community musical theatre group, is a charitable organization dedicated to making musical theatre experiences available to as many people as possible - affording an outlet for creative expression on stage and behind the scenes. Our auditions are always open to the public, announced through Calgary's free media. Everyone associated with the company is a volunteer. Our only pre-requisite for participation is enthusiasm. FRC is always looking for new members, especially backstage, producing and Front of House. Put those creative talents to good use. You don’t have to be an expert ... just willing and able. Set construction, painting, lights, sound, props, costumes, make up, ticket sales, and even in front of the bright lights on stage. Interested?

is proud to announce the final fantastic show in our 2005/2006 season, which has delivered a celebration of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s (or 40s, 50s and 60s, depending on how you count!). All of our shows have open auditions, announced through Calgary's print media, Calgary-ACTS and the FRC website at www.frontrowcentre.ca.
