As our temperatures steadily begin to climb, our pasty forearms slowly begin to show signs of daylight, and the hemline of our trousers and skirts go from ankle-admiring to your thigh’s best friend, the temptation is often to dream of relaxing abroad. It’s understandable we suppose, the glistening sight of an unspoiled swimming pool, and a row of deckchairs as yet unclaimed by our European neighbours is often what keeps us going through the long winter months. Truth be told though, you don’t need to go anywhere because we’ve got everything you could possibly need right here. There’s Newcastle’s biggest music festival to look forward to for a start, as well as untold other cultural riches with the Late Shows treating you to a one-off evening of artistic delight in almost every venue in the city. The fun’s here, the sun’s here and ice lollies taste the same wherever in the world you are anyway. So why go anywhere else?

JIM MAWDSLEY @EVOLUTIONFEST Festival Director of the North East of England’s premier music event

What does Evolution Festival offer the music loving folk of NE1? As strong mix of those currently cutting it and those who’ll be big in the future for a bargain ticket price unmatched in the UK

What do you think the highlights of this year’s festival will be? Rudimental will be lively, Jake Bugg will probably steal the show but I think Paloma Faith will raise a fair few heads, she’s great live

How did you pick the local acts who are on the bill this year? We pick them on merit, who we think has worked hard and are making strong music which is helping fly the flag for the North East

What can people expect from Evolution in the future? More of the same, dynamic, progressive line-ups at unbeatable prices close to their homes!

How strong do you think music in the city is at the moment? Unbelievably strong, plenty coming through, massive emerging scene with a very healthy competition. It’s really exciting to be involved and it has been for the last 10 years!

MUSIC

From the indie kids, to the ravers, to the hardcore musos, the Bank Holiday weekend extravaganza has carved out a reputation for catering to all of the region’s tastes and, with 2013 comprising its biggest ever line-up, this year is no exception. Described by NME as “the biggest bargain of the summer” Evolution 2013 takes huge acts spanning continents and genres, and spreads them between the Quayside’s Spillers Wharf and Ballast Hills venues. Atop the bill this year is retro soul royalty and double Brit Award nominee Paloma Faith, who’ll be closing the festival with Monday night’s headline slot, and treating the audience to tracks from her two highly acclaimed albums Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful and Fall To Grace.Assuming headline duties for the Sunday night are fellow Brit Award nominees The Vaccines, considered by some to be the finest and fiercest live act in the country, their album Come Of Age entered the charts at number one and they’ve not looked back since. A must see for the garage and indie fans amongst you. Also on the weekend’s bill are two of the country’s youngest and most precocious talents as Ellie Goulding, who has found international acclaim with her emotive and compelling indie pop songwriting, and Jake Bugg, arguably the break-out star 2012, take centre stage on the Sunday and Monday respectively. They’ll all be joined on the main

EVOLUTION FESTIVALEVOLUTION EMERGINGBefore Evolution Festival starts in earnest, there’s the intriguing prospect of its forerunner Evolution Emerging. Taking the Evo spirit of providing a platform to the region’s hot aspiring local acts to its extreme, Saturday 25th May sees 40 artists divided amongst nine of the Ouseburn Valley’s best venues for a whole evening of free music. A must for music fans of any persuasion with the range of talent on show – a lot of which graduates to the stages of Evolution itself somewhere down the line. The Lake Poets and Lulu James were both headline acts at last year’s

Emerging. Taking in The Tyne Bar, Cluny’s 1 & 2, The Cumberland Arms, The Tanners Arms, The Star & Shadow Cinema, Heartattack & Vine, Blast Studios and Blank Studios, this year marks both the biggest and arguably the best outing so far. Headline sets come in the form BBC6 Music favourites and alt-rock innovators Let’s Buy Happiness, the sultry and seductive dark pop of Nadine Shah, the jack-in-the-box alt-pop of Shields, and B>E>A>K, who are a group of lads who dress up as birds and provide one of most enjoyable musical spectacles in the land.

stage at Spillers Wharf by the portable dance floor stylings of drum and bass dons Rudimental, the harmonious electronic sounds of the critically acclaimed London duo AlunaGeorge, Ireland’s no-nonsense blues exponents The Strypes, and the most exciting thing to happen to indie for an age, Bastille. With Arlissa, Drenge and Eliza & The Bear all in for good measure as well. Meanwhile the more dance focused Ballast Hills stage sees the dubstep/elecro/rock fusions of Modestep, bass music superstars Sub Focus, and grime superstar Lethal Bizzle top a bill that includes Loadstar, Delta Heavy, Dismantle, Mista Jam and Zinc. Evolution Festival though, as it has always been, is also the biggest

stage for aspiring acts from the region to ply their trade, and 2013 sees three of the North East’s most exciting young artists added to the bill. Rising soul star Lulu James, rockstep pioneers Rossi Noise, and the haunting acoustic folk of The Lake Poets will all be appearing on the main stage over the weekend. That’s a whole load of musical joy for your money by anyone’s standards, and at just £39.50 for a weekend pass, or £29.50 for a day, it makes the notion of venturing down to far flung reaches of the country get your festival kicks seems, frankly, ludicrous. “We have been working damned hard over the last few months to put together the strongest, most varied line-up yet,” festival director Jim Mawdsley tells us, “and as usual we are proud to have such a strong mix of today’s heavy weights and future stars. The dance stage at Ballast Hills will be an even bigger draw this year and again we are producing all of this for the best value ticket in the UK festival market. I for one can’t wait!”One bank holiday weekend, countless artists, all spread across one of the city’s most picturesque areas, for the cost of 1/8th of a Rolling Stones ticket. See you down the front, yeah?

With so much to choose from (we’ve not even scratched the surface here), you might be struggling to decide where to go. Thankfully that’s where the Contemporary Art Society’s guided tour comes in very handy. Organising your own Late Shows itinerary for you, the society will kindly guide you around the venues taking part as well as giving you an introduction to each location. Like all the events it’s completely free, but you’ll have to email [email protected] to book a place. If you’re more of the carefree

adventuring spirit, then you’re welcome to pick up a bike from Hoults Yard or the Cycle Hub and take your own guided tour of the amazing street art in the area.Elsewhere The Hatton and Laing galleries are both catering for the art conscious amongst you; Los Angeles artist Ed Ruscha provides the inspiration for your own attempts at collage making or cup decorating at the Hatton, whilst Turner Prize nominee Paul Noble is the focal point of an evening of buzzing jungle vibes, dance and costume over at The Laing. History buffs amongst you will be wanting to take advantage of the many special tours on offer, the highlight of which being a chance to learn about the rich history of the 150 year old iconic Swing Bridge. Booking’s essential for this one as well (via [email protected]), but you know it’s going to be good when they insist you wear ‘sensible’ footwear.Oh, and for the kids (both big and small) Life Science Centre are giving you a very rare chance to not only see behind the scenes at their blockbuster dinosaur exhibition, but will have a host of live demonstrations in their planetarium, the largest of its kind in the North East. You’ll be spoiled for choice, we think you’ll agree. It looks liquid but it kind of kicks every once in a while?Luckily we do have a lot of people come along, we have sold it out three times now! I admit that those ones have been people coming to see that show’s guests, but we are building up a following of regulars who come no matter who the guests are. Not that the guest list is shabby - Sarah Millican, Jason Cook, Chris Ramsey, The Futureheads and Simon Donald are a few of those who have been on and we have some belters lined up for the coming months.
