Up and coming: Sake trends in Asia According to a recent article by Nikkei Asian Review, Japanese sake exports are on the rise thanks to a global boom in the country's cuisine, with the rice wine becoming a more important ingredient in Japan's agricultural exports. The value of the nation's sake exports rose 10% in 2016 to 15.5 billion yen (US$ 137 million), marking a record level for the seventh straight year. With the domestic market shrinking, sake brewers are rushing to develop products for foreigners and expand sales channels for overseas markets. They are particularly targeting youths in urban areas, who tend to follow trends, as well as the wealthy in Southeast Asian countries enjoying high economic growth.
