Vigil set for ThursdayTo commemorate the bombings of

Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament plans a candlelight vigil Thursday at 8 p.m. behind the Unitarian Church of Princeton, Cherry Hill Road.

Members of the coalition will contribute readings, reflections and songs, to share their commitment to decreasing the risk of nuclear war. In addition, a family from Hiroshima will explain how people in Japan observe the anniversary of the bombing.

People are invited to bring a candle or an origami crane. In case of rain, the vigil will be held in the church sanctuary.

Also, on Sunday, an eight-film marathon will take place. The movies, judged to be the best on issues relating to nuclear disarmament, will be shown at Nassau Presbyterian Church, 61 Nassau St., Princeton, from 4 to 10 p.m.

A supper break is scheduled for 6 p.m. Participants are asked to bring a snack. Drinks and dessert will be provided. A suggested donation of $2 will be asked of viewers, to help defray film rental costs.

Senator elected to postSen. James W. Borheimer has been

elected to the post of Assistant Majority Leader in the New Jersey State Senate. The election took place at a recent party caucus.

Bornheimer replaces Sen. Walter Rand, who chose to remain as chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee. Under Senate rules, persons holding leadership posts may not chair standing reference committees.

Bornheimer, who was elected to the Senate in November, is a veteran legislator. He was first elected to the New Jersey Legislature in 1972 as an assemblyman. In the'lower house, he chaired the Banking and Insurance Committee.

During his tenure in the Assembly, Bornheimer successfully sponsored a number o f ' consumer-protection bills, including legislation to eliminate abuses in the issuance of health insurance policies for the elderly. He also was responsible for legislation broadening the coverage of health insurance sold in

New Jersey and for landmark legislation stipulating that alcoholism be treated as a disease rather than a crime.

The East Brunswick legislator is a graduate of St. Peter’s College. Employed as an accountant by Boro Motors Inc. of Metuchen, Bornheimer held a number of posts in East Brunswick, including membership on the Planning Board and Sewerage Authority. He also served as a township Councilman and council president.

CETA funds on wayMiddlesex County may receive an addi

tional $109,000 dollars to be spent on disadvantaged youth who meet the CETA eligibility criteria, according to Freeholder David B. Crabiel.

County CETA Director William Nolan said, “ The funds will be distributed to the municipalities currently operating a sum- merprogram.”

982 Funding aids neighborhood image

by JoanL. March

SPOTSWOOD — In the past year, at least 10 borough residents have taken advantage of a federal home improvement program which is designed to help members of the 19 participating communities in Middlesex County maintain good neighborhoods.

Currently, the Middlesex County Department of Housing and Community Development has $393,182 available for individuals who are eligible to participate in the Housing Preservation Loan program.

Eligiblity is dependent on household income. For instance, a family of four with an income under $21,800 would be eligible for the no-interest loan. A two-person household with an income under $17,400 would also meet the requirements.

Robert Sabo, business administrator, is the municipal representative for the program in Spotswood. “ This program was originally a full grant but with the cutbacks in federal funds, it has been changed to a nointerest loan,” said Sabo.

“ Eligible residents may apply for money to rehabilitate their homes. The loan must be repaid only if the rehabilitated property is sold or if there is a change in ownership. This method allows the money available to be recirculated and enables the program to continue despite cutbacks.”

Edith Smith is one of the residents who utilized the program. Mrs. Smith received a loan of $3,000. No loan can exceed $7,500. “ I had a new roof put on the house and all my wood trim was aluminum sided,” said Mrs. Smith. “ They also did some masonary work on my front steps.

" I ’m certain I would have done the work on my own, but I would have had to do it a little at a time. This Is an excellent program for people who need it,” Mrs. Smith added. “ I was very pleased with the quality of the work that was completed.”

Not everyone who uses the program is happy with the caliber of work. One resident was so displeased he asked that his name not be used because he feared it would cause additional trouble with the contractors.

“ They give these jobs out to the lowest bidders and the work they do is inferior,” the man said. “ You get what you pay for and the workmanship I got is not what, you could call quality. I had aluminum siding installed and a new kitchen floor put down. They did the job over a year ago and they still have to

come back to finish properly.“ I don’t care if I didn’t have to pay for it or

whose money was used,” the man added. “ Government money is everyone’s money and I don’t like to see it wasted. I think this program wastes a lot. If you spend a dollar, you should get a dollar value back. This program doesn’t give it.”

Sabo said that the quality of workmanship is usually good and he has not heard of any complaints. “ This is a public contract and it must be awarded to the lowest bidder,” said Sabo. “ However, the county inspects the work and requires a performance bond from all contractors. This gaurantees that the work is completed properly.”

“ I found out about the program through the Senior Citizen Center,” said Anna Daszkiewicz. “ I was so happy and thankful

for everything they did for us. We had to pay some money for the work, but they paid for most of it.

“ We had vinyl siding put on the house, electrical work done in one room and also had a new furnace installed,” said Mrs. Daszkiewicz. “ When the inspector came to look at the house, he told us we needed the furnace and put that in the application also. We couldn’t have done all this on our own and we are so pleased that we received this help.”

“ Our inspectors do this all the time,” said Sabo. “ Sometimes people are reluctant to ask for something even if it is necessary.”

Some of the residents felt there was a stigma attached to taking anything from the government. They asked that their names not be used. “ I kept putting off asking for the loan because I felt it was a handout,” said

one woman. “ Americans, find it difficult to take things. We try to get along as best we can. I finally applied for the program because I thought that I had paid into it over the years through my taxes. Still, I wouldn’t want anyone to know about it. It is difficult for seniors to get by in this economy.”

Officials say, however, that this program is beneficial to the entire community, not just the residents taking the loans. “ When the homes in a community are maintained, real estate prices are kept at a maximum,” said Sabo. “ This is a help to everyone in today’s economy.”

Sabo said that the program is used by all residents, not only seniors. “ This program is available to anyone who can meet the requirements,” said Sabo. “ The money is there. At the present time, we have no applicationspending.”

Firefighter's flam e favorsby Frances Kosa

Watching her fiance run off to answer fire alarms in South River sparked an interest in volunteer work for Patricia Ann Taylor.

The 22-year-old Raymond Place resident started thinking about how she, too, could do her civic duty, and she feels she has found her niche in the South River Rescue Squad.

Miss Taylor joined the all-volunteer first aid group in September. Now, having recently completed all five areas of required instruction, she is anxiously awaiting regular membership status.

And the squad, always involved in a search for new members, is glad for the fireman’s spark that sent Miss Taylor its way.

James Jones, the squad’s assistant captain, talked about Miss Taylor’s contribu

tions following an early morning call which involved a search for a drowning victim.

“ She didn’t lay back,” he said, noting how Miss Taylor helped lower the boat into the South River and handled grappling hooks. “ She wasn’t afraid to get right in there and do her share.”

Not that Miss Taylor’s efforts are different from those of the other 18 regular and five probationary members. Jones felt, though, that Miss Taylor’s actions that morning demonstrated the gutsy determination of a new, female member.

If anyone ever doubted that a woman can hold up her share of the bargain on a squad call, Miss Taylor’s actions would certainly dispel those doubts, Jones said.

There presently are eight female squad members, Jones said. The squad first admitted women about 10 years ago. Since then,

they have played a vital part in maintaining the squad’s services, especially during daytime hours.

Miss Taylor, however, is not one of the regular daytime workers. She works full time at the offices of Local 50, Bakery and Confectionary Workers Union in East Brunswick. The 1977 graduate of South River High School also is currently taking courses at Middlesex County College.

Asked how she manages to fulfill her squad obligations in her busy work-school- social schedule, Miss Taylor said everthing fits nicely. The squad requires its members to respond to 15 percent of all calls. With an average of 100 calls per month, she doesn’t find the quota at all difficult. Taking her turn on night crew means having to be home before midnight, but that is no problem either, she said.

first aid‘There’s a saying we have: ‘There’s no sex in first aid. ’

She giggled as she noted that the squad has a lot more calls than the fire department. That means her fiance, Hugh Black, sometimes finds himself waiting for her instead of vice versa. Black is a member of Summit Engine Co. The couple plans to be wed June 25, 1983.

Black is glad she joined the squad, Miss Taylor stated. “ He thinks it’s a good idea.” Their memberships in the volunteer groups means they will have to look for a placp in South River when they set up their household. “ That’s fine with us,” she said, “ because we like the town.” Miss Taylor is a lifelong resident, while Black moved here when he was in the third grade.

The pert, bubbly Miss Taylor said she’s heard no comments concerning a woman’s ability to serve on the squad. “ But I could certainly give evidence against that," she said. “ I carry my end. I’ve always been a strong person. There’s a saying we have: ‘There’s no sex in first aid.’ ”

Over the past year, Miss Taylor has found her involvement in the squad to be educational, rewarding and fulfilling. Having studied in the medical field, Miss Taylor feels the knowledge she gained in the first aid course is even more valuable than what she learned in the classroom. “ It’s something I can use everyday,”

She also is proud to be helping others. The squad provides an essential service, entirely through volunteer efforts, she pointed out. She joined Jones in asking other residents to consider joining, noting a larger member ship will help spread the duties further. More members also will help ensure the continuation of daytime transports, which, if eliminated, would force residents to use expensive private ambulance services.

Jones said the squad has certified instructors among its members. They will work out schedules so that new volunteers can take the required courses on their own time. Women who are around during the day and shift workers would be particularly helpful in the present manpower situation, he said.

[hidKSiOy Set sail to RiverboatTHE RIVERBOAT RESTAURANT AND

COCKTAIL LOUNGE has become a popular dining spot for seafood lovers since it opened almost two years ago at 353 W. Front St., Keyport.

The owner, Peter Mavrookas, is not a novice to the restaurant business. His father owned a diner in Avenel and his family operates the Colts Neck Inn. At the Riverboat, he gives his customers “ what they pay for by keeping the prices reasonable and giving the finest quality and quantity of food.” The service is always friendly and efficient.

The entrance to the Riverboat is a ramp bordered by wood posts and rope. The nautical theme is carried out throughout the building. The dining room has large picture windows overlooking the marina and Raritan Bay.

Mavrookas designed the entire restaurant using chandeliers with ship’s lanterns, wood paneling and shades of blue in the carpeting and linen tablecloths. The dining room and lounge contain models of sailing ships, harpoons, port holes with stained glass windows and seafaring memorabilia. The attractive bar is boat-shaped. Live entertainment and dancing is featured in the lounge on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
