NIRMA LIMITED at their Soda Ash Plant near Bhavnagar had an existing 100m. high, 6m. diame-ter R.C.C. chimney with three flue ducts connected to it. Having decided to expand the plant capacity (with an additional boiler) and for discharge of the flue gases from this additional boiler, fourth flue duct had to be connected to this chimney. The challenge was cutting 450mm. thick R.C.C., approximately at a height of 12m. above ground level, of size 2.2m. x 3.2m. in a wedge shape and then horizontally pulling out the cut concrete weighing 8 tons.

The whole concept and detailed execution drawings for a safe and fool-proof implementation was developed by SMPS. For proper preparations and planning, 'execution aids' were prepared in the form of:• List of activities• Sequence of activities for civil works• Notes on cutting and removing concrete block• Detailed drawings, meant to ensure precise

and time-bound execution with micro timing

The work was later executed, exactly as planned, by specialized contractors.

TECHNICAL CORNER

Entire operation i.e. cutting of concrete using diamond-edge concrete cutters, removal of cut concrete by pull-out force at 12m. height through a winch mounted on the boom of a high capacity crane and inserting the mild steel flue piece including grouting was successfully and safely executed within two days time available during shut-down. With good wishes from all, we are happy to come out with this News letter to-day. We are also in the process of creating a new website incorporating several new projects.

As earlier, the news letter attempts to cover some noteworthy achievements and involvement of SMPS. Photographic gallery tries to depict various on-going or completed projects. SMPS continues to thrive with works through continuing clients as also from new clients.

We include a few letters received from our worthy clients-the selection of such letters is random, out of several that we receive.

New initiatives within SMPS office include installation of many indoor games, inter alia, table tennis-which has become a run-away favourite. With a manual treadmill, many persons sweat out their flabs too!

I wish to thank our clients for reposing their faith in SMPS and proffer my gratitude to those who have sent us their “Say about SMPS”. My thanks to members of various committees within SMPS in particular and all others in general.

We have known SMPS CONSULTANTS PVT. LTD. for

about 10 years now. During my first interaction with Shri

Sukumarbhai Parikh I found him to be a very simple and

unassuming person, willing to listen, yet very professional

in his approach. Since that first meeting, SMPS has been

our Designers and Consultants for several projects for our

various sites including Ankleshwar, Solapur and Panoli.

We have found SMPS to be a firm of Consultants, typically

conventional, but with very non-conventional ideas. The

personnel working with SMPS are all devoted, sincere and

hard working. The services rendered by SMPS have been

timely and efficient. In short, it has been a pleasure

working with SMPS and we hope to see this relationship

growing and getting stronger in times ahead.
