Congratulations to Nativity’s First College Graduate!

Friends,

If you listen carefully, you’ll hear the sound of dreams taking flight here at Nativity Academy! We have so many wonderful success stories to share with you right now, starting with Nativity’s first college graduate, Felisha Lovett, who graduated this past May from Hanover College as a Communications major and triple minor! Felisha is the first of many students you will see come out of Nativity Academy’s rigorous school and programming: a bright, passionate student committed to achievement. Having our first four-year college graduate is an important milestone for Nativity Academy, and Felisha is a shining role model for our current and future students. Please join us in celebrating this joyous occasion!

As we embark upon another school year at Nativity Academy, there’s a thrilling feeling of upward momentum as we enter our second decade of existence. For most non-profits, ten years is the “make or break” point in terms of success. Nativity has greeted and overcome the challenges presented in our early years, and we are poised for even more growth! With the support,

commitment and dedication of so many, we have now moved into a new bracket of growth and development.

The excellent leadership of our Board of Directors has allowed Nativity Academy to develop and implement our strategic plan, which serves as our compass as we move forward. We are dreaming and executing the vision to carry this school forward as a beacon of excellence in the community. With a grant to provide iPads for each student, a recent visit from Archbishop Kurtz, growing enrollment, and plans to add a fifth grade to our school next fall, Nativity Academy is an exciting place to be!

Archbishop Kurtz visits Nativity Academy on students’ first day back to school!

The students, faculty, and staff of Nativity Academy were delighted to have Archbishop Joseph Kurtz welcoming our students back to school on Wednesday, August 20th!

Archbishop Kurtz greeted students and their families as they arrived between 7:00am–7:45am to begin the school year and then led the students in morning prayer to kick off the day. Nativity’s first four-year college graduate, Felisha Lovett, was also in attendance for the students’ first day and shared the virtues of Nativity Academy’s rigorous schooling and programming.

The Courier-Journal, the Record, and WDRB were here to capture this special time for our school – below is an excerpt from the Courier Journal article:

“Students walked into Nativity Academy at St. Boniface Wednesday morning and were greeted by Archbishop Joseph Kurtz and Executive Director Carol Nord on their first day back at school. The Archbishop led the students in prayer before the first day of school started at the nonprofit middle school, which offers small class sizes, with an extended day period, enrichment program, and graduate support.

‘We are providing education, for those who can’t afford it,’ Nord said Wednesday.’

The enrichment program offers students a chance to participate in ballet, chess, debate, drum corps, drama, basketball, and more.

‘...after school...is a big deal for our kids, because it’s a safety net...so they aren’t out on the street,’ Nord said. ‘It’s giving them cultural opportunities, and then the parents know their kids are safe in the afternoons.’

Felisha Lovett, Nativity Academy’s first college graduate, came back on the first day of school to visit, where she was greeted by faculty and staff.

‘It was life changing,’ Lovett said of the school. ‘If I hadn’t gone to school here, I wouldn’t be where I am today.’”

Focus on...Ms. Millie!

Ms. Millie (Millicent Meehan) has been volunteering with us at Nativity Academy for two years! She has served as a study hall monitor, she frequently fills in for school receptionist Ms. Shaughnessy when needed, and she also teaches a cooking class two times a week.

Cooking is one of our students’ favorite EDP classes and always fills up quickly! Ms. Millie’s theme is healthy, quick meals you can make at home. This is a perfect tie-in with the addition of physical education (PE) classes now required every day for our students.

In addition to creating healthy meals, students in Ms. Millie’s cooking class learn the value of A-grade hygiene and efficient clean-up in their food preparations. Big thanks to Ms. Millie!
