I hope you will be pleasedto hear that in 2006/07 we raised over £2 million indonations and pledges. The Annual Fund, the University’sannual fundraising programme, enjoyed its mostsuccessful year to date with in excess of 2,000 alumniand friends giving nearly £250,000.

Helping students tomake a differenceUniversity of Exeter students spend more than100,000 hours each year helping groups in thelocal community. In the last year, donations havesupported the vital work of student volunteers.

• £31,000 was awarded for two new CommunityAction minibuses used regularly by 144 childrenand 150 older people.

• £12,000 was given to support student volunteersto organise summer adventure holidays for localchildren over two years. Around 55 children fromthe local community took part in summer 2007.

• £1,940 was awarded for First Aid training forstudent volunteers.

In 2007, thecontribution to thecommunity made bystudent volunteers washonoured at an awardsceremony. Politicsstudent Owen Thomaswas named ‘Volunteerof the Year’ after hecarried out 780 hoursof voluntary work in ayear. Students whotook part in RAG raisedmore than £45,000 forcharity in 2006/07.

World-class libraryfacilitiesAs alumni and supporters will know, every generation ofstudents depend on having knowledge at their fingertips.In 2006/07, grants totalling £134,000 were awarded tofund Library improvements. The grants paid for ten newlaptops for loan to students, secure laptop storagefacilities, and information display screens. A multimediaroom has also been created with the latest sound andfilm editing equipment.

Coral reef researchfor Biosciences students Biosciences students studied coral reefs at aninternational research centre, thanks to donors.The course was held at the Gerace ResearchCentre, San Salvador, in the Bahamas. The trip, inthe summer of 2007, gave students the chance tocarry out their own practical research into coralreefs, seagrass beds and mangroves. Thirty-twostudents studied the natural history, functioningand conservation of the ecosystem and produceddetailed reports on their findings. The School ofBiosciences was given £20,000 raised through theAnnual Fund to help meet the cost of the trip forstudents.

Supporting sportingexcellenceThe gifts of alumni and friends are helping oursportsmen and women to succeed. A grant of £6,000was given this year to create a special training room foruse by University rowers. “At theUniversity of Exeter, there is aunique, lifetime bond betweenalumni and students,” said studentrower Robin Gerlach, from theExeter University Boat Club. Headded: “The support we havereceived from alumni has allowed us to be able tocompete on the same level as other universities and beatthem. That is why I would like to thank all of those whohave supported us.”

Alumnus Nicholas Bull(Chemistry, 1973), a dedicatedsupporter of the University, said:“I spent most of my three years atExeter rowing. We had somenotable successes, particularly atBritish Universities SportsAssociation (BUSA) competitionsand at Henley Regatta. I made a number of friendswho I still see thirty five years on. Unlocking the Past Archaeologists from the University of Exeter made aremarkable discovery in a dig supported by alumni.The Archaeology Exploration Fund has beenawarded £20,000 to allow more students to takepart in field expeditions. The grant enabled fivestudent supervisors to attend an excavation at amedieval manor at Stokenham in Devon during2007. One of the most fascinating finds was anornate 15-cm-long iron key with a heart-shapedhandle. Rebecca Miller, a postgraduate student inExperimental Archaeology, said: “Participating on thedig has provided me with invaluable work experienceboth in a supervisory role and in finds processing.It has greatly improved my confidence and hasencouraged me to seek a career in archaeology.”

Helping to nurturethe spirit of learningFreny Sepai is just one student who hasbenefited from a bursary to help fund theirstudies. The 24-year-old, whose daughterPheroza is four, says the bursary has eased thefinancial pressures of coming to University. Thesecond year Drama student has used the £600bursary she receives each term to pay her rentand support her daughter. “The bursary has beenreally fantastic for both me and my daughter,”said Freny.

Freny wants to work as a documentary filmmakerand writer once she has finished her course. Sheadded: “Thank you for making it possible for meand others like me who have had this wonderfulopportunity to go to University and focus more onlearning than wondering where our next meal iscoming from. £2 million cricketcentre becomes a realityPlans for a £2 million indoor cricket centre at theUniversity of Exeter are being turned into realityafter a successful fundraising initiative. The centrewill provide training facilities for talented studentcricketers as well as players in the community. A giftof £250,000 for the centre was donated byHonorary Graduate Sir Christopher Ondaatje, withan additional £1.5 million coming from donors andother sources including the England and WalesCricket Board. The Sir Christopher Ondaatje CricketCentre, which will have four indoor nets, is set toopen in autumn 2008. The many other generousgifts we have received will not only assist in theconstruction of the building, but also help infurnishing it with new equipment such as cricket nets.

Recognising donorsThe University of Exeter College of Benefactors hasbeen established to honour individuals who havemade a major contribution to the University.His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohamed AlQasimi, Member of the Supreme Council of theUnited Arab Emirates and Ruler of Sharjah, is thefounding member.

Professor Steve Smith, Vice-Chancellor of theUniversity, presentedHis Highness with theaward at a ceremonyin Sharjah during May2007. “Admittance tothe College ofBenefactorsdemonstrates ourappreciation of all thatHis Highness has done for the University over more thantwo decades,” said Professor Smith. The ceremonywas attended by 125 Exeter alumni who live andwork in the Gulf. His Highness is a graduate of theUniversity of Exeter, having achieved a DPhil in 1985and an honorary doctorate in 1993.
