Examples …. One way in which religion socialises individuals is that it teaches norms

and values using religious texts and rules. For example, Jacobson found with her sample of British Pakistani’s that Islam became central to this group as they felt ambiguous about their ethnic identity due to a feeling of exclusion from white culture and a lack of attachment to the historical backdrop of their Pakistani roots.

Instead, Islam became central and socialised young British Pakistani’s into norms such as not drinking alcohol by teaching them that this is expected, and not to adhere would be disapproved of, and parents may sanction their children if they don’t conform. Role models may also be important as they imitate the actions of religious characters such as Mohammed, and this is how the sample were socialised by religion.

Examples …. A second way in which religion may socialise individuals is shown by

Cecile’s study of Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland. He showed that religion teaches us a sense of identity using a sense of belonging and also a sense of what we are not. Both religious groups saw themselves in terms of stereotypes. E.g. the Catholics saw themselves as fun loving but protestants saw them as lazy. This shows that religion can teach us our sense of identity and may also give us norms such as confession and mass for Catholics.

Examples …. Religion can teach you to be religious. I think religion is becoming less

important because less people go to church nowadays so it is less important. I have noticed that no people have religions such as Ninja or Fen Shui so new religions are appearing. I think this is because we are now more accepting of different religions.

Religion can also be more important if you are not white. Pakistani youth are all religious, or at least they were at my school. I think that’s because Islam is more powerful and it socialises them all to wear headscarves and pray loads.
