Every activity our bodies perform
requires energy. The energy our
bodies require to carry out the
activities in our daily lives comes
from food and drinks, which provide
us with nutrients. The nutrients our
bodies receive energy from are proteins,
1 and fats. Each of these nutrients contains different amounts of
energy which can be measured in2 . Each type of nutrient contains a
different amount of calories per gram (cal./g), with fats containing the most (9 cal./g) and proteins
and carbohydrates providing the same amount (4 cal./g). When we eat, we provide our bodies with
an amount of energy known as* . Knowing the amount of calories we
are introducing into our bodies is important because consuming too many calories or too few calories
means that we will not achieve energy4 . In order to help us keep track
of the calories we consume, most packaged food and drinks include a nutritional guide. On the
5 , we can find information about the serving size. A serving is the amount
of food or drink that has the number of calories listed on the label.
