I. General Information

§ 1 Purview

The following examination regulations of the Faculty of Economics and Management are amendments to the general provisions, settled in the latest versions of the general examination regulations for bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Kassel. They are valid only for the consecutive master’s program in Economic Behaviour and Government (M.Sc.)

§ 2 Academic Degrees; Type of Profile (1) Upon completion of all examinations, the Faculty of Economics and Management will

award the academic degree ‘Master of Science (M.Sc.)’ to the candidate.

(2) The master’s program ‘Economic Behaviour and Governance (M.Sc.)’ is designed as a research-oriented course of studies. Details as such result from the Diploma-Supplement.

§ 3 Standard Period of Studies; Scope of Studies; Start of Studies; Study Language (1) The master’s program’s standard period of study is three semesters. This timeframe also

includes the completion of the Master’s thesis and the completion of the Master’s colloquium. In accordance to circumstances mentioned in § 6 (2), the standard period of studies may be extended for one semester.

(2) For the completion of the master’s program a total of 90 credits will be awarded. Out of these, 24 credits will be awarded for the final module consisting of the Master’s Thesis and the Master’s Colloquium.

(3) The master’s program starts at each year’s summer and winter term.

(4) Courses are taught in German and in English. An end-to-end study in English is possible.

§ 4 Examination Board

(1) Decisions on examination matters are made by the Examination Board “Economic

Behavior and Governance (M.Sc.).”

(2) The Examination Board consists of a) three professors b) one research assistant c) one student from one of the degree programs of the Faculty of Economics and

Management.

§ 5 Types of Examinations; Module Examination; Repetitions

(1) The following types of examination are possible to evaluate students academic performances: • written exams (at least 15 min per credit) • oral exams (20-45 min) • term papers • oral presentations in combination with a term paper For the module “Additive Skills” (see § 7 (2)), other types of examinations might be allowed at request.

(2) A module examination is considered as passed, if it is rated as “sufficient” (4.0) at least. Failed module tests may be repeated twice. It is not possible to repeat an already passed exam.

(3) Module exams and exams of single module parts can be constructed cumulatively from the types of examination possibilities mentioned in section 1.

(4) The enrolment for an exam requires the exam’s assignment to one of the modules. If no assignment is done, the exam will count as an additional performance. The conversion of a module examination to an additional performance or the conversion of an additional performance to a module examination is not possible.

(5) For exams of classes that are offered only once per academic year, a retry option in case of failure at first try is offered in the following semester at the latest. Using the retry option of course requires foregone participation in the regular exam. The latter rule might not apply if specific reasons, i.e. interruption of studies due to sincere illness, maternity or parental leave, study times abroad or other reasons for which the student is not accountable in person, are at hand. However, in any case, it is upon the Examination Board to decide.

II. The Master’s Degree

§ 6 Admission Requirements to the Master’s Program

(1) Admission to the master’s program is only possible for students who have

1a) completed their bachelor or diploma I exam in the field of Economics and Business Management at the University of Kassel or

1b) graduated from a German university or a foreign university after a standard period of studies of at least 6 semesters and

2) have obtained at least 210 credits and

3) have obtained the necessary expertise to fulfill the requirements settled in section 3

and 4) can demonstrate a sufficient knowledge of the English language in accordance to the

provisions settled in section 4.

(2) In cases where the prerequisites of section 1 number 2 are not met, the Examination Board will give its approval to admission only under the constraint that the student proves the successful rework of the missing credits from the bachelor modules (max. 30 credits) prior to writing his master’s thesis.

(3) A student’s necessary expertise is given, if at least the following requirements are fulfilled:

3a) The completion of at least 60 credits in economics and/or economic psychology and/or business ethics and

3b) the completion of at least 18 credits in mathematics or in statistics or in econo-metrics.

The recognition of a student’s necessary expertise might be subject to the constraint of making up for missing elements of the requirements defined in section 3 bullets a and b. In this case, the leeway must be made up prior to the master’s thesis. A (preliminary) recognition of a student’s necessary expertise is impossible in cases where the amount of missing elements from the requirements from section 3 altogether exceed 12 credits.

(4) Applicants whose native language is not English must have a sufficient knowledge of the English language. The knowledge of the level B2 certificate (GER) will be considered as sufficient. The sufficient knowledge of the English language is to be proved by at least a minimum performance in an internationally recognized test or by comparable achievements

§ 7 Examination Parts

(1) The master’s program is successfully completed after finishing the modules listed in Sec.

2 and after finishing the Master’s Thesis and the Colloquium as referred to in § 8.

(2) In the course of the master’s program, the following modules need to be completed:

From those modules listed in section 2, not less than 30 credits must be earned from modules taught in English language. To complete an English module, the course as well as the module exams must be held in English.

§ 8 Master’s Thesis; Colloquium

(1) The Master's Thesis and Master's Colloquium constitute the final module of the study program. For this module, a total of 24 credits will be awarded. To calculate the overall grade of this module, the grade of the Master’s Thesis will be weighted with 75% and the grade of the Master Colloquium with 25%.

(2) At the earliest, the topic for the Master’s Thesis will be issued in the 2nd semester. It will only be issued upon request. Prior to the Master’s Thesis, it is necessary to generate a total of 54 credits. The total processing time of the Master’s Thesis is 4 month. The processing time begins on the date of notification of the topic.

(3) In cases where the candidate cannot comply with this deadline, for reasons that are out of his sphere of influence, the deadline will be extended by the candidate’s period of absence, but no longer than 4 weeks.

(4) The Master’s Thesis is to be submitted to the Examination Board in due time. The submission must include two hard-copies and one copy in electronic form. The thesis can be written in German or in English. In agreement with the evaluators, it is possible to write the Master’s Thesis in another language.

(5) The Master’s Thesis is to be presented in the Master’s Colloquium. This Colloquium will consist of the candidate, the first evaluator and an assessor. It shall take place no longer than 10 weeks after the Master’s Thesis has been submitted to the Examination Board. The Colloquium will only be held if the Master’s Thesis is graded with the minimum grade “sufficient” (4.0). The duration of the Colloquium is at least 30, but no more than 60 minutes.

(6) In order to pass the final module, the Master’s Thesis as well as the Master’s Colloquium must have been rated “sufficient” (4.0) at least. In cases where the Colloquium has not been rated “sufficient”, it may be repeated once. In case of repetition, the second evaluator needs to be present as well. If the repetition of the Colloquium is also rated as “not sufficient”, the final module will be rated as “not sufficient” and therefore as not passed.

§ 9 Composition and Weighting of the Final Degree

The final grade of the Master's Degree is calculated as the weighted arithmetic mean of the overall grade for the module exams M1A-M6 from § 7 (2) and of the grade for the final module. The overall grade for the module exams M1A-M6 from § 7 (2) is calculated as the

arithmetic mean of the non-rounded module grades, weighted by the allowable credits earned in each module. To calculate the finale grade,

a) the overall grade for the module exams from § 7 (2) will be weighted with 70% and

b) the grade of the final module will be weighted with 30%.

III. Transitional- and Final Provisions

§ 10 Transitional Provisions

These examination regulations apply to those students, who started their studies in the Master’s Program in ‘Economic Behaviour and Governance (M.Sc.)’ in or after the winter term 2013/14 at the University of Kassel.

§ 11 Coming Into Force

The module provides an in-depth training in econometric methods that allow for a quantitative analysis of empirical questions in economics with a focus on both research and practical application. Econometric methods are key instruments in the analysis of economic phenomena. Based on their knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's Degree within the area of statistics and econometrics, students will learn the advanced use of the econometric handicraft while dealing with economic issues. Since a computer-aided analysis is nowadays a standard procedure, the use of statistical software will be essential in this respect. A prime objective of this module is to enable students to select econometric methods for an empirical analysis of business and economical problems on their own. This way, students will be able to interpret solutions on a scientific level and evaluate them critically.

Based on the methodic knowledge acquired in their bachelor studies, students will learn the advanced use of econometric handicraft while dealing with empirical questions. Since a computer-aided analysis is nowadays a standard, the use of special software is essential in this respect. A prime educational objective is laid upon enabling students in selecting and using adequate science-based economic methods for an empirical analysis of business and economical problems. This way, students will be able to interpret solutions on a scientific level and evaluate them critically.

This module introduces advanced concepts and methods in the field of economics to normative and positive issues and problems of economic policy. The modules main focuses are upon the role of state institutions and on public choice approaches. By applying empirical and theoretical techniques, students will learn to make profound statements about the relevance of governmental institutions for economic policy. They will be working on subjects like the European Economic- and -Monetary Union as well as the role of the state in a globalized world. The following qualifications will be acquired in particular:

• Ability to apply economic approaches to the analysis of practical economic questions.

• Ability to critically analyse economic policy issues.

• Knowledge of the relevance of general framework conditions for political actions and of their relevance for the results of economic policy.

Students obtain profound knowledge about economic policy and governance issues. This knowledge is indispensible for a wide range of professions e.g., representatives of industry and trade, government departments, public administration, international organisations or academia. This module adds to the necessary qualifications for professional careers in public administration or research institutions in which the analysis and evaluation of policy is the main focus.

This module focuses on the analysis of governance processes in markets. Key aspects are the study of reasons and starting points for the appliance of economic policy interventions, as well as their impacts on market dynamics. A special focus lies on the application of behavioural science approaches and governance processes in times of economic change. By applying empirical and theoretical techniques, students will learn to make profound statements about the reasons of and the solution for urgent economic problems. The students will work on subjects like demographic change, unemployment or climate change. The following qualifications will be acquired in particular:

• Ability to apply economic approaches to the analysis of practical economic questions.

• Ability to critically analyse economic policy issues.

• Knowledge and understanding of governance processes and economic policy interventions in times of economic change

This module introduces advanced concepts and methods in the field of Business Administration with a focus on Corporate Management.

Students obtain insights into the mechanism and functionality of modern firms, into the concepts of modern corporate governance and into the importance of environmental influences and governmental frameworks for the firms’ success. The following qualifications will be acquired in particular:

• Ability to analyse intra-company problems as well as to give solutions and development options

The module introduces advanced concepts and methods in the field of business administration with a focus on consumer behaviour and consumer research.

Firstly, this module includes courses which encourage the communication skills of students. They will acquire the knowledge as well as the skills to be able to perform and manage interpersonal interactions in diverse and complex situations. A special meaning in this context is laid upon the understanding and dealing with different social roles, especially when it comes to intercultural communication situations and gender discussions. Secondly, this module includes courses which provide students with an insight into theories, concepts and methods of other disciplines. The aim is to connect extra-disciplinary knowledge with the field of economics. Particularly, this approach sharpens the students view on the strengths as well as the limitations and implicit provisions of their own economic discipline. Finally, students will learn important skills such as the ability to handle conflict situations, criticism, being able to self-reflect, empathize and work in (culturally mixed) teams as well skills to lead a discussion and the competence to moderate difficult situations. These are important complementary additions to the disciplinary communication skills the students will be provided with during their seminars as well as for all future fields of employment. Therefore, this module not only supports job qualifications and gives students a deeper understanding of their own field of expertise. Furthermore, students learn to communicate with students from other fields of studies, which today is of central importance for future areas of employment. Thus, this module enriches the students’ key qualifications.
