Cit Hall Annex at 57 Inman Street houses man of Cambridges most public ofces,

including the Arts Council Galler and ofce, Parking and Trafc Department, and the

Communit Development Department (an ofce with substantial communit interface).

Complete renovation of this 1871 building represents a comprehensive response to sev-

eral pressing program needs. The design utilized the U.S. Green Building Councils LEED

Guidelines (Leadership in Energ & Environmental Design) to achieve a Gold rating for

this project. These goals have prompted an approach that includes operable windows

and an inux of natural light to ever ofce and work station as well as a number of

other sustainable design choices. The new design provides a welcoming entr and lob-

b, clear circulation and signage, efcient ofces and general laout, mold decontami-

nation, code upgrades including handicapped accessibilit throughout, and separate en-

trance for the Animal Commission which vaccinates pets and houses stra animals.

This new complex is the rst municipal project under the towns new sustainable design

initiative. The project will house the towns Department of Public Works administration,

engineering and operations divisions as well as municipal ofces for the Town Facilities

group, and will utilize sustainable design principals to maximize dalighting, good indoor

air qualit and reduced energ costs for the town. Additionall, sited adjacent to the

Minuteman Bikewa and the North Lexington Brook and located on a bus roadwa in

a residential neighborhood, the site design features ecological restoration and sustain-

able stormwater management strategies as well as low maintenance, indigenous plants

landscape design. The programming and planning for this facilit was a joint effort of

our design team. The collaborative effort of design and engineering results in this new

    model for municipal facilities.

The Storer Building houses engineering laboratories and classrooms used to train cadets

about marine mechanical, electrical, and power generation sstems. The original facil-

it dates to the 1960s and was inadequate for teaching the current curriculum. Among

other design challenges, the facilit is located in high risk tidal ood zone A-13. This

means walls and door openings the rst four feet above grade must be watertight, and

all building materials must be stable in the presence of water. The new addition utiliz -

es a three-stor atrium that connects to the existing building and allows natural light

to enter existing laboratories that would have been obscured with a conventional addi-

tion. The ground oor of the atrium is a pedestrian street connecting the campus parade

ground and residential complex to the Harrington Building, the main administrative and

classroom building at the Academ. The new 26,000 square foot addition includes class-

rooms and facult ofces, an expanded electrical laborator, and labs for turbines and

boilers, uids and thermodnamics, refrigeration, meteorolog, and marine safet. The

existing facilit was upgraded to meet accessibilit and life safet requirements.
