EXAMPLES OF

APPLICATIONS FOR THE

ACCESSORIES OF CBA-32P

INTRODUCTION

• In this document, a few examples of applications for the CBA-32P

accessories have been reported.

• In detail, these are the accessories that will be introduced and whose

test results will be illustrated:

• 1) ZLT: Resistive linear transducer

• 2) ZLB: Mechanical adapter

• 3) ZRT: Resistive rotary transducer

• 4) KIT ZLR: Mechanical linear-to-rotary converter

• 5) KIT ZMS: Universal mechanical adapter

OIL breakers (KSO breakers)

Oil breakers are among the oldest types of circuit breakers on the market.

Many are in service for over 50 years. Their reliability and simple operation

account for their endurance. They are available in various sizes and voltage

ratings.

For this type of circuit breaker, the KIT-ZLB linear kit is usually used,

along with a ZLT-600 linear transducer, since the total travel of this type of

breaker is among the longest of all.

The travel (or displacement) measurement, in this case, is LINEAR!

ZLT: Resistive linear transducer

Kit-ZLB: Mechanical adapter

Examples of real tests

• The first example refers to a test executed in Alabama on an oil

circuit breaker. In this case, the resistive linear transducer (ZLT)

has been mounted on the device to perform a displacement

measurement.

• The second example refers to a test executed in Quebec on a

bulk oil breaker. In this case, the KIT-ZLB and the ZLT-600

linear transducer have been mounted on the device in order to

perform the displacement measurement.

• The third example shows the direct installation of the KIT-ZLB

linear kit with a ZLT-225 linear transducer .

Example 1: Test in Alabama

• The first test has been performed on a three tank OIL

BREAKER, in Alabama, USA.

• The picture shows the resistive linear transducer mounted on the breaker.

• In order to perform the displacement measurement, a rod has to be inserted in the breaker and screwed to the mobile part of the contact breakers. Oil breakers have a hole designed especially for this purpose.

Québec, Canada, with the KIT-ZLB linear kit and ZLT-600

linear transducer:

EXAMPLE 3: AREVA GL 212 Breaker

• In the case of a GL 212 breaker, the KIT-ZLB is directly installed

with a ZLT-225 linear transducer without any particular adaptation.

breakers

• ZRT rotary transducers may also be used for oil circuit breakers in combination with the KIT-ZLR linear-to-rotary motion converter. In this case, either the ZRT-03 or ZRT-05 transducers should be adequate for this purpose.

• The figure on the right shows a practical example of KIT-ZLR linear-to-rotary motion converter and a ZRT-05 rotary transducer mounted on a circuit breaker.

SF6 Circuit breakers

• The examples described before show that oil breakers typically

allow to perform displacement measurements through resistive

linear transducer.

• SF6 has become one of the most popular interrupting medium

for circuit breakers, due to its dielectric properties.

• Some SF6 breakers allow to measure not only the travel part of

the breaker but also its damping part.

• In some of these breakers the access to the travel mechanism is

limited. For this reason, the displacement measurement has to

be executed through an intermediate point, which is mostly

rotary!

Example 2: AREVA GL 315 Breaker The mechanical basis and the transducers are mounted in the place of the Close/Open position indicator.

Example 3: AREVA GL 212 Breaker

• The following picture shows a GL 212 breaker with a KIT-ZLR linear-to-

rotary converter in place (Hydro-Québec license), along with a ZRT-10 ten-

turn rotary transducer. A ZRT-3 three-turn transducer could have been also

used in this case. Note: The mechanical mounting basis shown in the picture

is an obsolete model. The new one is available on the accessories section of

the website.

Example 3: AREVA GL 215 Breaker

• This picture shows a GL 215 breaker: it works exclusively with ZRT rotary

transducers. The mechanical basis shown below has been specifically

developed by Hydro-Québec for this type of circuit breaker. It’s also possible

to observe the bolt and the coupler required to link the transducer to the

breaker.

• Each phase needs one of the aforementioned kit.

Example 3: AREVA GL 215 Breaker

AREVA GL 215 Breaker – results:

• The GL215 breaker has two contacts per phase, (six contacts in total),

and one mechanism per phase, (giving three displacement curves).

Everything is clearly displayed in the following graphic:
