CAD Models are perfect, the real world is not

Page 2: Examples of Powertrain Applications Using Enventive

Piston / Valves assembly design optimisation:

- Statistical analysis and optimisation of the lifting of the valves at any angular position of the camshaft.

- Statistical analysis and optimisation of the distance between the valve and the different possible interference elements (notably the piston).

- Inclusion in the model of the tilting effect of the valves and any position (this tilting may have an effect on the accuracy of the system).

- Statistical analysis and optimisation of the swept volume (the volume between the head of the piston and the top of the cylinder.

Chain layout design & statistical optimisation:

- Statistical analysis and optimisation of the position of the tensionner piston in function of all the tolerances of the other components present in the system.

- Inclusion in the model of all contact conditions (including complex chain / cam contact) and tolerances.

- This statistical analysis and optimisation may also include the forces applied on the chain and the corresponding elongation of the chain.

System level Engine design optimisation:

- Any system level parameter of the engine that involves non dynamic effects can be easily analysed.

- Wear / thermal effects laws can be included so that for example the Mean Time Between Failure can be evaluated and optimised.

Turbo systems design optimisation:

- Statistical analysis and optimisation of the tilting angle of the fan’s shaft in function of all the tolerances present on all the components (including the tolerances on the bearings).

Transmissions design optimisation:

- 1D tolerance stacks relative to the fitting

Of the different components of the transmission.

- Statistical optimisation of the operation of transmission actuation elements (Clutch and gear changing mechanisms).

- Statistical analysis and optimisation of automatic transmissions park brake mechanism.

Comments from Enventive Users…“We can conceptualize design concepts ten times faster in Enventive than we can with

our native CAD system…Rather than seeking to simply avoid problems, by using tolerance-based optimization early in

the product development process, well up-front of traditional CAD, we’re able to use Enventive to target and achieve optimized design solutions and aggressively establish competitive product offerings.”

Yves Le Pottier – Electrical Device Supplier

“I cannot leave a discussion of Enventive without mentioning it is fun to use. The software is graphically based. Sketches and graphical representations of the parts drive the models. This, coupled with the easy to use interface, creates “Stack-up Junkies” who want to do the analysis because the software helps them easily visualize the impact a design change can have on the product.”

Eric Pattok – Delphi Steering Systems

“Our engineering team has been able to use Enventive after 4 days of training. We have been able to correct some design mistakes that were done in the past due to the limitations of the tools we were using. In the end, our customer praised us for the speed and professionalism with which we have been able to complete and present the DFSS phase on this project.”

Pedro Lopes – Ficosa International
