Community Support
Worker PLAR Program
Summary
The Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition (CSW-PLAR)
Program
A Prior Learning Assessment & Recognition process has been
developed for the Community Support Worker (CSW)
Program for
- individuals who are currently working as a support
worker in the disability services field;
- have completed Foundations (or similar) training, or;
- individuals who have relevant education (a related
post-secondary program certificate, diploma, or
degree) and sufficient experience (600 or more hours
in the past 2 years) as a support worker in the human
services field;
The CSW-PLAR process is useful for individuals who have the
required disability services background, because it takes a
shorter period of time and is a lower cost than the full time
CSW certification program.
The CSW-PLAR has a criteria process that a community
support worker must meet which assesses their skills,
attitudes, experiences, and understanding of their field. Visit
www.excelacademy.ca or call 780-441-7996 for more
information.
Assessment Process
Candidates meet with the Community Support
Worker Instructor who will assess their current skills,
attitudes and experience in the field, along with
evaluating previous education. From there, a
customized learning path is created for the learner.
Students who complete one of the Excel Academy’s
Certificate programs (HCA, CSW) can take the PLAR
Exam for the other certificate program at NO COST!*
*This offer is available to all students who have completed either
the CSW or HCA full certificate programs on or after 2008.
Students must present their certificates for this offer. Not available
to students who completed the PLAR program. Students must still
meet the entrance requirements for the PLAR program they are
applying for, and are responsible for payment of any additional
modules, labs, textbooks and other fees not covered by the PLAR
exam.

their final certification.

achieve their certification:
