    EXCELLENCE IN NAVAL SOLUTIONS

  • - 3 -- 2 - - 3 -

RELIABLE, HIGH-UPTIME EQUIPMENT WITH LOW ELECTRICAL AND ACOUSTIC SIGNATURES.

Jeumont Electric, a subsidiary of Altawest, is a major electricity production and conversion equipment manufacturer. For more than a century, Jeumont Electric has been designing, manufacturing, and maintaining power electric motors, generators and drives. The company brings broad, deep experience and proven know-how to the energy, industrial, and naval markets, serving customers around the globe.

UNRIVALLED KNOW-HOWJeumont Electric’s engineering, custom development, and high-quality equipment have earned the company a strong reputation on the naval market. In the 1950s, Jeumont Electric became one of the leading suppliers of direct-current propulsion equipment to the French Navy, and later, the Swedish Navy.

A STRONG CAPACITY FOR INNOVATIONJeumont Electric’s permanent-magnet motors (which the company was the first to develop) have led the market, delivering unrivalled uptime and reliability with very low electrical and acoustic signatures. Today, more than 80 military vessels are equipped with Jeumont Electric Machines, solidly anchoring the company as a leading supplier of equipment for both surface vessels and submarines to navies in France, Australia, Canada, Chile, Malaysia, Brazil, India, Sweden, and other countries.

Innovation has always been (and remains) the cornerstone of Jeumont Electric’s development strategy.

On average, the company allocates 3% of its annual revenue to R&D. The company’s priority R&D programs include:

    > improving the performance of the company’s existing machines to further reduce electrical and acoustic signatures, make cooling more efficient, and enhance command-control; and

    > selecting and validating technologies for the development of new machines in conjunction with academic research laboratories and under EU research and development programs. For example, Jeumont Electric is a partner of the EU Ecoswing project to design, manufacture, and install the world’s first 3.6-megawatt superconducting wind generator.

    JEUMONT ELECTRIC, IN BRIEF

  • - 7 -- 6 -L’INNOVATION

Jeumont Electric’s permanent-magnet motors for surface vessels combine an air-cooled stator (the same type used in conventional synchronous machines) with a radial-flow permanent-magnet rotor technology.

To ensure maximum equipment uptime, the stators in the permanent-magnet machines feature a multi-star winding system in which each winding is powered by its own converter connected directly to the vessel’s electrical network. This allows the equipment to operate even if not all of the converters and stator windings are available.

    SURFACE-VESSELPROPULSION

Jeumont Electric leveraged its extensive knowledge of conventional machines to develop permanent-magnet motors that take advantage of conventional machines’ strengths while compensating for certain disadvantages.

    High yield Low acoustic signature

Minimal maintenance that can be performed on board

Flexible: the motor can be used as a generator

Meets military specifications: impact, temperature, tilt, and humidity

+ KEY BENEFITSTODAY, JEUMONT ELECTRIC’S SYNCHRONOUS PERMANENT-MAGNET MOTORS ARE LEADING THE MARKET. They were selected for the French-Italian FREMM frigate program’s hybrid propulsion architecture in which the electric motor is integrated into the vessel’s propeller shaft.

    SUBMARINEPROPULSION

Very high uptime (overhaul every eight years coordinated with vessel maintenance) and redundancy to compensate for any malfunctions

    Compact (high power density)

Flexible (separate electrical cabinets) for optimal use of space on board and easier maintenance

Exceptionally low vibration and noise (multi-phase system with low phase coupling)

Meets military specifications: impact, temperature, tilt, and humidity

In the 1990s Jeumont Electric developed its Magtronic propulsion system to meet submarines’ unique needs for high uptime, reliability, and, above all, low electrical and acoustic signatures. The Magtronic propulsion system is built on a multi-phase synchronous permanent-magnet machine with IGBT electronic power converters.

HIGH UPTIME, LOW ELECTRICAL AND ACOUSTIC SIGNATURES The machine has a large number of separate phases, for two main reasons:> To ensure high uptime by preventing a fault on one phase from propagating to the other phases > To reduce vibration by smoothing out mechanical power fluctuationsAnd, to minimize noise, the system is water-cooled, eliminating fans.

The rotor is equipped with powerful magnets that are sized to prevent demagnetization over time or in the event of a fault. This makes the machine both very reliable and remarkably quiet.

RELIABILITY AND SIMPLICITYIGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor) power converters substantially simplify motor control while ensuring low losses and high reliability. The converters are installed in separate cabinets to make optimal use of space and facilitate maintenance, which can be performed on board without stopping the propeller shaft.

The many separate converters each supply a portion of the power required: This means that the machine can operate even in the event of a partial failure—and the submarine can continue its mission uninterrupted in a slightly downgraded mode until the necessary repairs can be made.

FLEXIBILITYThe propulsion system can operate in normal or emergency mode with the on-board instrumentation.

In normal mode, speed can be controlled while keeping noise as low as possible. Normal mode can be accessed from the vessel’s control room or a local control panel. Normal mode offers very high redundancy.

In emergency mode, torque is controlled directly. Each converter is connected to its own sensor completely independent from the others. Again, this ensures high uptime. The torque setpoint corresponds to a stator current value.

    POWERGENERATION

FOR DIESEL-POWERED SYSTEMS The DAR (Diesel Alternator Rectifier) is a synchronous machine with a single or double-star winding rotor to ensure continuous voltage for conventional submarines. The DAR has an integrated rectifier for voltages between 300 V and 500 V, for instance. The DAR can be adapted to suit different types of diesel engines from 1,200 RPM to 2,000 RPM.

FOR TURBINE-POWERED SYSTEMSJeumont Electric developed the TAR (Turbo Alternator Rectifier), a single- or twin-bearing machine that can be adapted to suit various turbines in excess of 3,000 RPM. The TAR has an integrated rectifier for continuous voltage between 300 V and 500 V. Despite the high rotation speeds needed to ensure a compact form factor, the TAR’s very quiet design is perfectly suited to the needs of military vessels.

Jeumont Electric offers a range of alternators to generate the energy for submarine batteries depending on the source of primary energy. All alternators have been developed to meet demanding specifications in terms of compactness and yields.

HIGH-ADDED-VALUE SERVICES Jeumont Electric can provide navies with equipment testing and simulation systems to:

    > Test and certify software> Detect and analyze faults, troubleshoot incidents, and analyze modifications> Train operators and maintenance staff.

These testing and simulation systems deliver high added value to navies by:> Making sure that equipment and modifications to equipment are safe

before they are installed on board> Providing 100% availability of all equipment by training operators and

maintenance staff on land rather than on board.
