The feelings of rapture as the end of an era draws nigh tempered by the harsh reality that this also brings their final VCE examinations closer. We wish our students well for their remaining time at St Brigid’s and hope that their focus and effort never wane from the ultimate purpose of many long years of secondary education. It was most pleasing to see our Unit 3/4 students actively engaged in extra classes, seminars and trial examinations during these holidays. The feedback from the staff who supervised these examinations was of excellent student application with the key now being to focus on the feedback offered and to continue to complete practice examinations and trial essays. Successful students will complete at least 10 trial papers in each study they undertake. Excelling in Life, Led by Faith.

Dear Parents,

Fourth term brings mixed emotions to our Year 12 students. The feelings of rapture as the end of an era draws nigh tempered by the harsh reality that this also brings their final VCE examinations closer. We wish our students well for their remaining time at St Brigid’s and hope that their focus and effort never wane from the ultimate purpose of many long years of secondary education.

It is an exciting time as we bring one school year to an end while concurrently planning for 2017. From today the students have 10 school days remaining and I wish them well as their 13 year formalise school educational experience draws to a close. I thank VCE Coordinator, John Lowes for his organisation of the trial examinations over the holidays and to the many staff who assisted with the supervision.

SOCIAL

There was a great spirit evident at the Social held last term. The way students entered into the “Hall of Fame” theme and the interesting dancing and clothing styles were outstanding. It underlines the fact that students can engage in a fun-filled night of celebration without falling into the trap of thinking that alcohol and other substances are necessary to have a good time. Thanks to Naomi Gash and the SRC for their organisation.

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations to Kyra Clarke (Yr 8) who has been awarded a certificate of acknowledgement in the annual Mental Health Week 2016 Schools Creative Writing Competition from the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Foundation Australia (Victoria) and its members. The judging panel and the Foundation were thrilled that St Brigid’s has taken the teaching of mental health, resilience and wellbeing in schools to such a level of understanding.

Congratulations also to Sam Bigham (Yr 11), who was recently awarded the 'Show's Young Leader of the Year Award' for his willingness to lead the GJ Gardner Homes Community Garden project at the Horsham Showgrounds during the year as part of his VCAL studies. Well done to Sam and all of the other VCAL students who worked hard on this wonderful project.

St Brigid's College fondly remembers Sr Barbara May csb who was a teacher at our school from 1989 - 1992. Sr Barbara was well liked by all members of the St Brigid's College community of the time

and indeed by members of the wider Horsham community. Past students and their families, together with those who taught with Sr Barbara are saddened by her passing last week after a long illness.

PRESENTATION BALL

Our Year 10 students have been developing their dancing skills on Wednesday and Sunday nights under the tutelage of Mrs. Jan Morris and Mr. James Henwood in preparation for our Presentation Ball to be held on Friday, October 21st at the Moore Pavilion at Longerenong College. As the night rapidly approaches, all indications are that the Ball will be an exciting and wonderful event.

HEADSTART 2016

We will once again be implementing HEADSTART, an academic program that supports students’ transition from one academic year to the next. This program provides educational advantage to all our students by strengthening their academic skills through the commencement of the next year’s coursework in the last two weeks of the current school year. This program will commence on Monday, 28th November, conclude on Friday, 9th December and involves the participation of all students from Year 7 to Year 11.

The implementation of HEADSTART benefits Senior School students as they will be better prepared for the rigours of VCE requirements, enabling them to undertake senior studies with confidence and success. This program also assists students in better utilising their time after the examination period and provides opportunities for subject/elective changes before the start of the new academic year. By starting next year’s coursework at the end of the current year, senior students will be better prepared to undertake independent study during the Christmas break.

The benefits of HEADSTART for Middle and Junior school students are that students engage with learning in a meaningful and effective way, and thus be realistically prepared for the demands of the year ahead. In addition, the program ensures a smooth transition for your child into the next year level.

As a part of HEADSTART, each student will be provided with their new class group allocation and timetable. Teachers will prepare coursework, learning experiences and assessment tasks that cover the requirements of the following academic year. Work begun at the commencement of the HEADSTART program in November of the current year may contribute to assessment and reporting for the year ahead.

SUNSMART

Our clear expectation is that all students must own a College hat and wear this hat at recess and lunch-times. I urge parents to ensure that their children possess an approved hat or purchase one from Lowes in the Plaza at a cost of $13.99. These hats are not meant to be a “fashion statement” but a functional protection against the sun.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY

We offer our prayerful support to the following families: the Rethus family on the recent death of Terry Rethus, Grandfather of Dylan (Yr 12), Maddison (Yr 9) and Tashana Meyer (Yr 10) and the Burke family on the recent death of Val Burke, Grandmother of Claire and Mitchell (both Yr 11) and Great Grandmother of Sam Vincent (Yr 12). Our prayers and thoughts are with you all at this time.

Yours in the community of St Brigid’s College
