Here we come to the end of a long journey of intense breeding, enjoyment, success and a deep love

for all things Simbra! A journey that has taken us to Namibia, Texas, Warmbad and all over South

Africa looking and searching for the best genetics that we can find.

A journey on which we met the most dedicated breeders, characters and cattlemen, from Dr Otto

Herrigel to Bill and Jane Travis, Zoran Arnautovic and Jan Richter who showed us the beautiful

RX Platinum calves to all the current breeders and Simbra fanciers around right now.

Please join us now on the 18 August 2016 for our last Simbra bull sale and to celebrate the genet-

ics and cattle that is Simbra.

E XCELSUS SI MBR A

The Excelsus Simbra herd was established in 1990 when Hennie De Lange used registered

Simmentalers and registered Brahman’s as base animals. In year 2000 Graeme and Margi

Currin joined forces with Hennie and his stud. They established a herd of high quality true

to type animals. The American and specifically Pine Ridge Ranch influence moved the

herd into a higher sphere.

The blend of SA and American genetics infused high quality red polled animals into Excel-

sus. Through selected mating they managed to stick to the right type– medium framed fem-

inine females and breed well muscled masculine bulls

Excelsus bulls have had a profound influence in our own and other stud herds. I regard

their herd easily in the top five in the country! A drive through the females with Graeme

always leaves me awe-struck as he knows their animals through and through.

The total dispersal sale after twenty years of breeding is the opportunity to buy some of the

best genetics around. These cattle are superior visually and on their performance figures!

met ‘n groep uitstaande bulle.

Die volgende bulle het 7 of beter gepunt uit 9: EXL1345C, EXL1384, EXL1441A,

EXL14121C, EXL14129, EXL156C, EXL1516, EXL1520C, EXL1532C, EXL1534C.

Hoewel van die bulle nog baie jonk is, wys hulle reeds baie potensiaal en behoort die

meeste van die bg. bulle te ontwikkel in baie goeie stoet bulle.

More Oom Hennie! Ek stop elke oggend en elke aand by die jong bul-

letjies by die mielie land langs die pad!

and the final score is a combination of the bulls ebv’s and his visual score! My own score

Biscay is a product of exhaustive genetic research and planning; building Simbra’s from the ground up and into animals that can

really lay foundations and make an impact in the Simbra breed. Biscay’s journey started in our F1 or New Genetics program

utilising top Manso bred females and crossing them with the best Simmentaler bulls that we could find. Hence Biscay boasts

Sanjika Shark (Sim) and Bos Blanco553 (Brah) as his grand sires. We have always maintained that an F1 bred from a top Brah-

man stud animal and out of top Simmentaler stud genetics that both have mile long pedigrees is not the same as any old F1 or F1

cum animal. This union brought us Excelsus Sandra who then was bred to Excelsus Pacific. Pacific brought the colour, length &

polled factor and Sandra brought the ear, breadth and hardiness. This proved to be a match worth its salt in combining Sanjika

Shark, Bos Blanco 553, Metsibra UDM9453B and PRR Prevail and producing one of our best Excelsus bulls: Biscay.

Biscay is possibly the broadest bull that has the most balance that we have seen in a bull since Excelsus Chris and it will always

be a pity that he never made it into the show rings.

We have used Biscay and he has produced the most precocious F3 calves that look like F1 or first cross animals.

Devian was the closest bull that we could find the fitted our Excelsus template and

we used this bull extensively prior to our female dispersal sale. Sired by Allerbest

Bob from an R2k Jaco daughter, Devian has also a lot of Kamab bloodlines in his

pedigree. This is a complete and typical Simbra.

Zelsor we found at the National sale at the Kroonstad Boma and had long ad-

mired him on his facebook pictures. This is a very hard muscled bull that we

used to great effect in breeding our heifers. His pedigree is mostly Groenkol

homebred with a smattering of Casjolene genetics.

We at the Excelsus team think that this is perhaps our finest collection of sale bulls fielded on one sale. It

is a combination of our current stud bulls, the 2013, 2014 and winter 2015 bull crops and these have been

carefully screened.

The current stud bulls we would definitely use again and will watch their progress closely at their new

homes. Excelsus Biscay will rate as one of the top ten bulls used at Excelsus and joins the illustrious com-

pany of Metsibra UDM9453B, Metsibra Tingeling, Maratana Langman, Wisp Will Enos, Excelsus Galen,

PRR Prevail, Excelsus Pioneer, Excelsus Pacific, Excelsus Prodigy and Excelsus Penzance.

Purchasing a young bull can be a gamble but can also be a huge investment, as said young bull can be used

for up to three years and then resold as a very marketable proven stud sire. I remember Dries Viljoen buy-

ing Excelsus Terah, using him for three odd years and then re-selling him for a handsome profit.

Here you have the choice of proven stud bulls, current stud bulls, potential stud bulls, polled bulls, Namib-

ian imported bulls, Texas imported bulls, top hard commercial bulls, brand new genetic bulls and invest-

ment opportunity bulls.

The Excelsus way has always been to try to breed a bull that is attractive to the commercial market i.e a

bull that is broad, has a good head and hind quarter. These bulls are then reared on the veld, then rounded

off for five months before the sale. These bulls run in huge herds and are used to the rough and tumble of

the social pecking order. They also are used as a vacuum cleaner polishing off camps after the cows have

been through them.

These bulls are then rounded off, tested to within an inch of their lives and then offered for sale.
