Eucharistic Adoration

Parish News

“Stay awake and be ready! For you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”

(Matthew 24: 42a, 44)

Eucharistic adoration helps prepare us for the day our Lord will come. Spending time in adoration gives adorers a quiet place to think about what is really important and to tune out the noise of the world. Come and spend some time in our adoration chapel.

We are looking to fill the following hours:

Mondays at noon Tuesdays at noon (partner) and 3:00 pm Fridays at 11:00 am

We also are in need of additional partner adorers and substitute adorers. For information about adoration or to sign up for an hour, please call Sandy at 763-789-3246.

School News

Journeys Program We are seeking individuals for our before and after school care program called Journeys. Our Journeys program offers a dynamic and fun program serving children in preschool through 5th grade. The hours are flexible and working with the youngest of learners is incredibly rewarding.

Art in the Environment The new Ordinary Time banner (see photo) was conceived, designed and assembled by three members of our IC Art and Environment Committee, Marlaine Szurek, Lynne Mitchell-Becker and Carol Clemens. The banner took over 200 hours to com-plete. It consists of three panels us-ing five different fabrics combined to create a wall quilt twenty feet long. The banner was made to re-semble a stained glass window. It is a beautiful and unique work of art!

Discipleship

Plan Wisely What would happen if you found out right now that relatives of yours were coming into town tomorrow, and they hoped to stay with you? You can either tell them they can’t stay with you, or you immediately begin a process of furiously cleaning, straighten-ing up, and grocery shopping in anticipation of your guests. If you don’t have to do anything to prepare because your home is per-fect, clean, and fully stocked, perhaps you don’t live in your home or you are obsessive compulsive. I suspect most people reading this would go into panic mode!

We spend much time putting off things until later. Then when something unexpected happens, we swing into action to deal with it or prepare for its effects. We would have acted differently if we knew what was coming down the road.

What does your stewardship way of life look like? Are you living as if you have forever, or are you living as if Jesus could return any moment and your life here on earth could end tomorrow? The gift of time is often taken for granted. If we live more mindfully of that gift, we waste less of it and maximize the moments in which we find ourselves. We give of ourselves in ways that are more meaningful and productive. The gift of tomorrow is not promised to you, but the gift of today has already been given. Use this day wisely because who knows what tomorrow may bring.

Reflection on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

August 15, 2019 (Holy day of Obligation)

The Solemnity of the Assumption celebrates the Blessed Mother’s entrance into heavenly glory. The Catechism explains that Mary “was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of his Body” (CCC, 974).

Mary’s Assumption into heaven reminds us that life on earth is a pilgrimage to our ultimate destination. We prepare in hope for our own passage into eternal life by the choices we make today. When we choose to love and follow God in our daily lives, we strength-en our relationship with Him, and this relationship is the true meaning of heaven: “To live in heaven is ‘to be with Christ’” (CCC, 1025 citing St. Ambrose, In Luc.,10,121:PL 15 1834A.).

We can see how, throughout her life, the Blessed Mother continu-ally chose to go deeper into her relationship with God. She mod-eled how to value and respect His precious gift of human life, from the moment of conception to its natural end. In the Annunci-ation, through her “yes,” Mary witnessed to the undeniable hu-manity of unborn children as she conceived and carried the Christ child in her womb. After the Annunciation, having learned that her cousin Elizabeth was with child, she went in haste to her aid.

Our Blessed Mother shows us how we can prepare for our own transition from this life to the next. Are we open to God’s pre-cious gift of new life? How do we support expectant mothers and parents of young children? Do we prioritize showing our love and care for loved ones who are ill or aging?

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Word of Life “We often assume parenthood happens easily after ‘I do,’ but for many married couples, it does not. … If you experience difficulty bringing a child into your family, know that you are not alone. God is with you, and his Church desires to walk with you.”

—USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Seven Considerations While Navigating Infertility”

Why Do We Do That? Catholic Life Explained Question: I’d like to pray each day, but I can’t seem to find the time. Do you have any suggestions?

Answer: There are a lot of different ways to incorporate prayer into your daily routine. Start small by setting aside 10 or 15 minutes at natural breaks in your day, like first thing in the morn-ing, during your lunch hour or a child’s nap time, or as the even-ing winds down just after you’ve brushed your teeth. Put your phone on do not disturb or in airplane mode and set a timer. That way, you won’t be interrupted by others calling or texting — or by yourself checking the time! Pick a place to pray, and sit in the same spot every day. The routine of place can help with focus.

Start with something simple. Scripture is a great start. Pray a sin-gle psalm slowly and consider how it relates to your life. Look up the daily Mass Gospel reading on your phone and take the same approach. Take some time to pray for others. Tick off five inten-tions on your hand each day, or assign each day of the week to a specific person or area of need (i.e., on Mondays, remember the poor, on Tuesdays, pray for your parish, Wednesdays, your ex-tended family). Remember to share honestly with God. Don’t be afraid to speak to Him in your heart as you would a friend out loud. Love grows in real relationship.

Live the Liturgy—Inspiration for the Week We are asked to be vigilant until our Master returns. Even though our faith tells us that Christ will come again and that our purpose and destiny is an eternal one, it is hard not to lose heart, grow wea-ry, and become distracted. Remembering the stories of our faith and what God has done throughout history is one way of remaining fresh and focused. Celebrating, recalling, and making real and tan-gible again what God has done is what our community does liturgi-cally each time we gather. As the author of Hebrews reminds us: Faith makes real what we hope for and is the evidence of things we cannot see. Let us take this time once again to remember and partic-ipate in what God has done and continues to do.

Gospel Meditations Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Tickets booked, packing list double-checked, itinerary set—how do you know you’re prepared for a trip? Being ready requires plenty of practical prepa-ration. Do we give the same care to our spiritual preparedness? “Your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom,” Jesus tells us. In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus

reminds us to have the right attitude for the gifts and callings he wants to give us!

Clear out your clutter! “Where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Jesus reminds the disciples that earthly standards of security and success will wear out in time. If our lives are structured around values that don’t align with the kingdom of God, we’ll miss opportuni-ties to receive God. If we’re so concerned with our child’s success in sports that we miss Sunday Mass for their tournaments, we’re missing out receiving the sacraments and building a consistent community of faith. If our quest for the promotion takes us away from family commit-ments, we won’t be able to fully receive the love intended in our closest relationships.

Set faith-based priorities. “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival.” Our conflicting commitments can cause any routine to slip from time to time. All the more reason to make sure faith is a priority. Pray as a family before meals. Bring your children regularly to the sacrament of confession. Make room in the schedule for faith enrichment activities offered by your parish. Volunteer once a month. “At an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.” When will the call come to care for an ailing parent? To take on a new leadership position? God speaks to us through the circumstances of our lives. He calls each of us to greater love, sometimes in very concrete ways. This week, take some time to consider: Will you be ready? ©LPi
